The rat should have just let the wrap up happen, lol.
Sadly the rat didn't get eaten and is now laying low in with a large clown male in hopes he eats it :(

Re: Feeding gone wrong ~ Blood warning
My guess is since we normally feed weanlings and smalls that she saw that big momma rat and said GET OUT,
and backed it up with a nasty bite

LOL...No offense, but theres a "Back" button...Good stuff OP, I always like seeing the big girls doing what they do best..lol...

Re: Feeding gone wrong ~ Blood warning
Now, is this rat dead? It looks dead but you said it's laying low, which would suggest alive. If it is alive I'd nurse it back to health before feeding it off, or at least kill it, with those injuries.
While I dont really find it funny or enjoyable, I do think it's sad that your snake didnt eat it. Did the snake get injured?

 All animals deserves respect, feeding live is cruel for the prey and dangerous for the snake!!! And know there's a back button, but I am the voice of those who cannot be heard, and if it is something wrong i must say it out loud to stop cruelty, behave like a thinking human being!!! So go and.....think about respect!!

Feeding live is natural. Taking instinct away from a pet who just lives to hide, eat, poop, and breed is cruelty IMO. It's not like the OP knew the snake was gonna go nutso on the rat, thanks for posting the pics. I find it interesting and educational... not funny.

It's not cruel. Snakes will eat live in the wild, and I know that captive ball pythons aren't the only ones who will probably miss a few times, too. I'm sure the original poster did not mean any harm, and did not mean to hurt the rat. And I know of a few baby ball pythons who are horrible at their first few feedings, too. It's not cruelty.

I can't say the same. My ball python is afraid of live, and refuses everything except frozen/thawed, so even though I am "taking away" his instinct, he is feeding well, and not afraid of his food.

I think everyone has a right to feed what they want, and everyone has their own opinion for that. But to say that one way is wrong or cruel isn't true at all.
Though, I would be a bit afraid of that snake if I were you. :)

Well, they Prey of course thinks that it is cruel. Now, with those voices that cannot be heard, is that human voices or the rat voices?
Sorry, I just think its funny when people get worked up over nothing. I cant say I like what happened to the poor rat, What I see is a Nonhungry snake who was using Defence strikes, but that is not your average feeding.
Now tell me, when did you call the OP and ask if their snake will even take Prekilled or Frozen thawed, before you voiced all of this, because I am assuming that you did to be saying all of that.
If you do not like it, maybe snakes are not for you.

Re: Feeding gone wrong ~ Blood warning
I like how people feel bad for animals they like. Rats, in our case snakes, cats, dogs, etc. And predators seem to get a bad rep.
But when something eats a bug, or when someone kills one, isnt that cruel as well? What about all those poor defenseless bacteria you kill when you use hand sanitizer? Think how many of the infectious, dangerous, well protected bacteria get their claws in when you free up all that space for them, but all those poor defenseless bacteria that were living on your sweat or eating dead skin and were protecting you from dangerous bacterial, no one seems to worry about them, they just die in the billions, their tiny screams echoing through eternity.
And what about the plants, they grow and produce means of spreading themselves, but we cut them down in the millions and turn them into cow food or use their oil to fry our twinkies. Does no one think of the plants? How many plants must die every day to feed this country alone? And while many of these plants lack mammal-esque characteristics, think of the potatoes and their eyes, they have to see you cutting into them to make your french fries, or the treas and their long elegant arms, you cut their torsos to send them to a saw mill to make paper.

Yes, you should respect all the animals but I see nothing that the OP did as disrespectful. Live feeding is the natural way of doing things, and the rate of injuries to the snakes from live feeding corresponds with the irresponsibility of the owner and how they feed live.
Some snakes do not eat f/t. I have one that I've had for 2-3 years that still won't eat f/t to this day. That's just how they are sometimes.
If you think that it's cruel, then sell your snakes and start collecting stamps.

Oooo stamps. They are pretty nice. Especially ones from foreign countries.

Re: Feeding gone wrong ~ Blood warning
Rat definitely looks dead to me.

Re: Feeding gone wrong ~ Blood warning
I just love how there is always someone who has to bash people that feed live prey to their snakes. Some snakes will just not eat f/t no matter what you try. Injuries do only generally only happen when the keeper is not supervising the feeding or taking the prey item away when the snake shows no interest. Injuries can also occur with feeding f/t if the prey item is not thawed properly. Perhaps as was already stated, snakes are just not the best choice of a pet for you in this case.

I respect all of my feeder rats. They are well taken care of. None of my snakes eat f/t though and will only take live. Although I have not had anything happen like the OP, I do not find this necessarily cruel to the rat. It looks like it was constricted but not eaten. Nothing more, nothing less. Everyone has their opinions on feeding live vs f/t and they should be respected for their opinion. But remember, when you start attacking those who feed live, you also open yourself up to counter attacks.

Re: Feeding gone wrong ~ Blood warning
I didn't see this post continuing my bad
The rat was dead in the pic and died instantly when the snake struck it at lightning speed, partially wrapped it as it was biting the snake.
The skin tore on the rat making it a mess, if it was too graphic I'm sorry :(
This rat was an ex-breeder and was a chewer of tubs and after that threw a litter of 3.
This snake as mentioned normally eats much smaller, so I think it just hammered the rat in defense.
I raise high quality pet rats for the pet trade, disrespecting a rat is not something I would do on purpose, ever.
I have no need for F/T and while I have a few that will take it, I feed strictly live, just like they've fed on for millions of years.
-
Re: Feeding gone wrong ~ Blood warning
I think the only reason people were upset is because they thought the rat was still alive through out this whole process, not struck at and constricted.
-
Re: Feeding gone wrong ~ Blood warning
Oh for sure not, we have a gas chamber, it would have been put to use immediately if the rat was still alive, that rat was dead instantly.
The snake had a partial wrap and its teeth were stuck and so the snake basically drug the rat around trying to let loose of it, creating the mess you see.

No the snake didn't eat that night, but it snacked on a large weanling the next night.
And no, the snake didn't get hurt at all, it did however get a much deserved bath due to the mess it made.
-
Re: Feeding gone wrong ~ Blood warning
Oh I'm glad it's dead. The "laying low" comment made me think it was still alive, and was kind of scared for it if it were, it definitely looked dead but without being there it's kind of hard to be entirely sure.
Glad your snake ate, did the other snake end up eating it?
And yeah after that kind of carnage anything would need a bath.
-
Re: Feeding gone wrong ~ Blood warning
wow, thats gruesome for sure. hope my girl doesnt do all that but...who knows she just might.
as for my 2 cents on this whole live vs f/t debate...
i'm for whatever the snake will accept whether it be strictly live or if by chance it does accept f/t.
i believe that for something to live something else must die.
its the fact of life.
i'm not gonna waste precious emotional energy by getting upset about something i have no control over.
to the OP - i KNOW you had fun cleaning that mess up...j/k
