Black snakes?
Hello everybody. My 5yo son just recently asked me for his own snake. He told me he wanted a black snake. So since I was in the market for a new snake anyway I figuered ill get a black snake. I will be caring for it myself ad have my son help out with it. So my question is what are some solid black snakes that are available? I would like a super cinny but I know they are expensive. Any info would be greatfull. Thanks in advance.

Re: Black snakes?
BLACK MILK SNAKE,they start out as tri colors and slowly turn black.easy to care for and a lot of personality.

Re: Black snakes?
I don't think I've seen an all black ball python but there are black king snakes. Since he is 5years old he would probably love anything you got as soon as you said it was his and wouldn't even care if it wasn't black or not.

Re: Black snakes?
I second the black milk snake. Or a Mexican Black King.
-
Re: Black snakes?
Thanks for the suggestions. I think im leaning towards the black milk but you never know what he will decide on next. You know how kids are lol. As for the black bp I thought a super cinny was a black snake with a white belly. I could be wrong though.

Re: Black snakes?
you could get a black mamba..heh..or a black milksnake

Re: Black snakes?
I'll chime with over the top black snakes...Indigo's and Boelen's are my top picks...But that's for me...:D:D

Re: Black snakes?
I like the Mexican Black King snakes although I move a lot slower than they do.

Re: Black snakes?
Super cinnys are SO pretty.
-
Re: Black snakes?
I would probably go for the black milk snake. All of the mexican blacks that I have met are pretty nippy. And that's not a fun way to learn about snakes when you are 5!
Yes, any snake can be nippy, but these guys have an excellent feeding response. Even when you don't want them to!

Well then, ringnecks are cute too! And inexpensive!!! Although the ones I've found locally have better color than the ones I see periodically on kingsnake.

Re: Black snakes?
what about a dark sand boa.... sure it might not be all black, but to be honest he is 5, I think a super cool snake is better than a cool color :D

Re: Black snakes?
Not all mexican blacks are nippy. Mine is great, has never tried to bite. Has musked though but gets over that pretty quick. If you get one as a baby and get it used to handling it should be fine. Just take time to choose the right one. Handle it before you purhase to get a feel for its personality. If its a nervous snake then it will likely rattle its tail musk and possibly strike. If its not nervous then it will most likely not do any of the above. Either way it may be a little flighty as these snakes usually are, they like to move.
here is my mbk.

Indigo's are either illegal to own in many states or require a special permit to own - if you go that route, be sure to check your state regulations in regards to owning them. Sadly, I cannot own them in GA.

Your son would probably freak out and say he wanted just about any black snake he sees.
Give him pictures of all the different black snake options he has, then tell him their habitats, how he would have to set things up for it, the kind of care it will need, humidity, temps, size, etc. Then let him make an informed decision. At least you can then help him learn some reasoning skills instead of doing all the work and making the call yourself, or him just making the call based on looks.
And before getting the snake, write out a list of everything you'll need for it and go shopping for those items with your son and let him go through the list instead of you going through. The more responsibility and freedom to think you offer your child the better off he'll be in the long run (I go to college with people who are still mentally 13, and not in the joking cute way but in the not mentally developed couldnt function if they didnt live with their parents no jobs would keep them for more than the training period way).

Re: Black snakes?
Show him this picture of a black milksnake:

THIS is why I got a pair!

Re: Black snakes?
I would tend to push the milk....as anything black in python would be quite expensive and probably not a good idea for a first snake(only due to pricing). Milks are so awesome!!
-
Re: Black snakes?
Best bet would be either a black milk or mexican black kingsnake, depending on what kind of adult size you're looking for. The black milks tend to be a little bit bigger than the kings from what I've seen. I'd also like to toss in that as for the nippiness, my mexican black king has yet to strike at anything that doesn't smell like rat. :gj:

Re: Black snakes?
That black milk is awesome. I think ill wait till the Tinly NARBC show to get something for him. In the mean time ill be teaching him all the pros n cons. He alreaady has a high interest with just my snakes. Who knows maybe he pic something else completly different.
-
Re: Black snakes?
Teach him everything you have, let him ask questions, and most of all give him the time to think and give him openings to think. Children are awesome but if you dont push them to think on their own they'll never grow into their full human potential.
Good luck :gj:

yeah they were almost whipped out at one point.

Re: Black snakes?
Definitely Black Milksnake! What I would do for one. Get one as a baby so you can see the bands disappear. From what I've personally experienced, their pretty docile snakes too. Atleast all the ones I've had the pleasure of holding.

Re: Black snakes?
What I dont get is: Okay, snakes are taken from the wild to be kept as pets, so they ban ownership... Why not just ask owners to breed, hatch eggs, and then they can release the offspring.
