Humidity in egg box
I was wondering what my humidity level should be in my egg box? I am expecting a clutch tomorrow or the next day and have my box in the incubator, but am having difficulty getting the humidity above 85%. What should the humidity be? I didn't have quite as much hatchrite as I thought so ordered more but it won't arrive for 2 days. Is 85% ok, or is that too low? Any suggestions if she lays tomorrow? Thanks.

Re: Humidity in egg box
Did you try Press and Seal over the top of the box? Mine are around 99% give or take with the press and seal.

How are you measuring your humidity?

My acurite is not reading anything above 25%. I took a cheap flukers that is in my milk snakes cage and put it in the tub. The temps are right on the mark with the thermostat and the egg tub has condensation. Not precise, but it gives a good idea of the temps and humidity.

Re: Humidity in egg box
I have tried 3 different acurite humidity/temp devices and all have fail with in a month or so. I actually started using a gauge that I took out of an cigar humidor. Seems to be pretty accurate.

Re: Humidity in egg box
lol yeah they seem to short out with the high levels. soI just soak my medium and place a light difuser on top. Plus with the coke machine ( my first try this year) I also keep a wet tea towel on the flexwatt, since i have it run up both sides and the accross the bottom. the towel will asorb any moisture that runs down the sides and revaporate it during the next heating cycle ( holds the temp and humidity great.. the one digital probes with humidity gausge says about 88-89 temp and I seen from 84-89% humidity on the display. I have a temp probe in with the eggs and it gives me about an 88.4- 89.6range.. the lower temps are when I open the door . It heats back up really fast too.

Re: Humidity in egg box
I tried multiple ways this year with my eggs and they all seem to be working. All used 6qt tubs with press-n-seal and then lid snapped down.
1 - Eggs sitting in hatchrite
2 - Eggs sitting on diffuser sitting on hatchrite.
3 - Eggs sitting on diffuser with spacer with just water.
Currently sitting at 100% healthy hatched with all remaining eggs looking great.
I think I like #3 the best. Cheaper & cleaner. Just be careful of "sloshing" when moving them around. At day 55, just moved them to a 6qt with wet paper towels.

Re: Humidity in egg box
I'm glad I started getting ready before my eggs were laid. I was pulling my hair out trying to get my humidity up. I added water 3x and that didn't change the humidity. When I put the Flukers in my tub, it took about 10 minutes to get to 99%. I added some vermeculite/perlite the dry some of the water. Still reading 99% with the Flukers. Just gonna keep an eye on them until they hatch. Fingers crossed.
