    Betadine for snake?
Hi, I just have a really quick question. Is Betadine a good idea to let a snake soak in if it has suffered burns? I have heard that a diluted solution of it and letting them soak for like 10 minutes is very relieving.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betadine

    Any input helps, thanks!!

    Not "relieving"

But yes, its one of a couple things used to help prevent infection

I don't know if I would "soak" a snake in beta-dine. I would be afraid of them ingesting some of it. What I would do is soak some sort of cloth and try to wrap it around the snake. As impossible as that may sound this is something I would try.

There's nothing wrong with soaking a snake in diluted Betadine

Just place the animal is regular water for the first 10 minutes or so. That way if they want a drink first they can get it.

    THEN add your Betadine.

That sounds a little overly cautious... You're not forcing a snake down into it, they're supposed to be soaking. Many people have done diluted betadine soaks without issues, myself included. The water should be shallow and the bath should only last 10-15 minutes. Be sure to supervise because I've read about some snakes drowning.

That's me "overly cautious":). I just would not want it to ingest any of it. I guess you could put the snake in the water first. So if it does drink any it will be just water. Then add the beta-dine. I have never had to soak a snake but I did have to soak a few of my Bearded Dragons when I had them.

I never said anything about forcing the snake down into it. I was just thinking about another way. :gj:

I just said the same thing in my repost after I saw I was corrected by another member.

I haven't really seen a snake start drinking when put in a dish to soak (usually they just sit there or look for a way out), so I kinda assumed if it was going to ingest water it would be in a struggle lol. Understood now, though!

Yeah I am going to grab him behind the head and force him to get in the water and stay there...:rofl::rofl: Just to clarify I am only kidding!

It is funny how things online could get misconstrued so easily. But I see where you are coming from.:D

To the OP I did not mean to take over your thread.:gj:

If you're unsure as to how to treat the burn, I would take a trip to a vet. Infection is a real concern as well and your vet may have a better alternative to treat the burn.

    Good luck!

I already did and he suggested betadine. I just wanted to double check and make sure that there would be no risks in treating snakes with it. Because I know some Iodine contain other ingredients that may be harmful to reptiles.

She is on an anti biotic Enrofox.

Also got a topical cream Silver Sulfadiazine to help also.

I am hoping to start seeing signs of healing soon.

That's good news. This information would have also been helpful to us that were worried about the snake's health. Nothing against you, but all too many times, someone will post a home rememdy or something that THEY thought would be good for the snake.

I'm really glad the snake is getting the proper care it deserves!

If it were me. I would soak it in clorhexidine, not the betadine. Chlorhexidine seames more soothing for them, and the betadine can burn them if left to long or the mix is to strong. This is from my own experiances. Also you don't need or want to rince the chlorhexidine off after the soak.

Yeah sorry it was all so sudden. Picked her up out of the tank, noiced her stomach. Called every vet and most were closed, then called animal rescues around us and luckily the one up north had a vet that knew about herps that was staying late (phew) so I smashed up there within 10 minutes of discovering it.

Hopefully with all 3 of those things, including soaking her she should make a quick recovery.

Should I try to offer food or hold of till she is fully healed?

How bad is it? Most will not eat if the injury is bad enough to stress them out. I would wait a week at least. But don't be surprised if she does not eat for a little while.
