Re: Fogger for humidity?
Foggers are great for helping with humidity, but I have never used one with a ball python. If you decide to use one, I would make it so they can not come in to contact with it.

Re: Fogger for humidity?
I would get a room humidifier. Or, there is a sticky here that tells you how to make your own. It has great instructions.
Here you go: http://www.ball-pythons.net/modules/...warticle&id=53
The only problem with a fogger is, you don't want your ball to be wet. Or, to stay in a wet cage. I guess you can turn them down to only come on once a day? Hmm. Not really sure.

Yes, you can plug them into timers, I've only used a dimmer once, but I would think having it on a timer would be better.

Why not just use a bigger water bowl?

Hi, I would recommend this:

or stratus's link for a DIY version.
foggers can be overkill for a ball python

Re: Fogger for humidity?
I saw a post awhile back where someone used a fogger, it was on a timer, it worked well to raise the humidity (they had a tank). The video was pretty cool.

Re: Fogger for humidity?
I do have a fogger. My main concern is the fact that the water vapor remains so dense in low spots. Like fog in a valley. I'm unsure of the effects that this high of a concentration of water vapor would have on a bp's respiratory system. It seems to me that a few good breaths of that much water vapor could cause a R.I.
That is why I do not use it.

Re: Fogger for humidity?
Herpstat also makes a nice controller for humidity levels that isnt to expensive, but if I had to I would rather use a waterfall than a mister for previous reasons stated about the water density and RI chances. Bubbling / moving water would would cause a jump in humidity faster than standing water and would turn it on only when needed. With a timer I would be afraid that only a few minutes would be to much, or not near enough...with the Herpstat it would kick on and off only when needed keeping a fairly constant level.
I havnt used the Herpstat so I cant say how well it works, but I do plan on getting one.
Just my :2cent:

Re: Fogger for humidity?
I would not use a Fogger for a Ball Python. I had a very bad experience with one of those when I initially started reptiles about 2 years ago. I bought one, put in on minimal settings, ran it for 30 minutes every other hour. After about a week or so, I noticed my BP climbing his tree, every time I would put him back in from being handled, he would not go to his hide or anything. After the 3rd time or so, I checked his bedding, and it seemed fine. I always checked his cage/bedding for feces. I dug to the bottom and discovered about a half of inch of water, and it was very stale.
Therefore, I would not recommend this product for a Ball Python. It's far less expensive to spray the tank 1-3 times a day. I use a rack system now spraying is what I do if I even have too. Ive had perfect sheds for about 18 months now! =)
Hope this helps your decision...

Re: Fogger for humidity?
What have you tried besides this? There's bigger water bowl, covering the top, spraying. Actually, those usually take care of it. I'd put it in a tub before getting a fogger.
When I had a tank with the top covered, the CHE over the water bowl actually helped both my ambient temps and humidity.

Re: Fogger for humidity?
Foggers are great for tropical animals that require VERY high humidity, but not for ball pythons.
Ball pythons like a lot of humidity but they don't like it wet. I feel as though a fogger or misting system is overkill for a ball python.

Hello.
I use the Repti Fogger unit from Zoomed. I love it! I have 1 unit for each of my ball python enclosures. They run for 30 minutes in the evening. The humidity drops slowly throughout the day, and then pumps back up again at night. The snakes have all had a shed since I installed them. All of them had a FULL BODY shed, from the tips of their mouth all the way to the tips of their tails with no ripping or tearing. I wouldn't recommend running it for more then (2) 30 minute sessions a day though, as your humidity will climb to well over 90% RH. Overall though, I'd recommend a fogger over a mister. The misters tend to wet everything, including the snakes. The fog is such a fine mist that it doesn't seem to 'wet' the snakes.

I don't know where the rumor began, but high humidity does not cause respiratory infections in ball pythons. In fact, low humidity is implicated. Most RIs occur in the fall and winter, when indoor temperatures become very dry, and air temps cool.
RIs should be treated with higher temps and humidity levels as well. High humidity helps a snake stay hydrated, and thins mucous secretions.
I think a fogger would work great for a ball python, if it's been hard to keep the humidity level at 60% or higher. Just be aware that foggers can condense water on the tube, and may drip. Put the water bowl beneath the tube, or keep a close eye on it to make sure that the bedding in the cage stays dry.
Wet bedding can cause skin irritation and infection.
So--humidity high, bedding dry.

Re: Fogger for humidity?
I've got a fogger running on a Herpstat Humidity, and it works perfectly. The air stays humid, and the substrate stays nice and dry. Make sure that you use only distilled water in the fogger, or you will find the life of your fogger drastically decrease due to mineral deposits.

Humid hides work great if kept damp :)
