Holy smokes, I'm in love with your Melanistic Eastern Garter. That is one gorgeous snake. Wish I could find one like that around here, then I probably would have a Garter. :D

Mixed litter born in November.. The father is Albino, the mother Het Anerythristic.
The pairing produced one very healthy snow.

Right after I took this, I moved the little one to a wet shed box to help it along.

The snow is due to shed next, it was "blue phase" yesterday, will probably shed tonight.

I must be honest. I had never ever thought I would say I want to own a Garter snake. Seeing is how growing up in East Texas all I did was catch them and play with them. But, after seeing that red one! I WANT ONE! Where could I get one of those? Do I even want to know how much? LOL!!!! Very Beautiful snakes, your post has opened my eyes to Garter Snakes! Thanks!!!!! :banana:

We will have to see what happens in the spring.

I am pairing my two high red flames, so I should have a litter this coming 2011 season.

The red ones with black trim are around $100, the albino flames are still a new morph, but I know of 4 different breeders who have the necessary stock to produce, so the market will depend on numbers of available animals.

I will warn you, they are addicting.

This is one species that thrives with more than one in a cage at a time. I house most all of mine in pairs minimum.

Like a tropical fish tank, there is always some sort of activity when the lights are on.

What other species can you have a red snake, a white snake and a blue snake all in the same cage?

Once they are pinkie trained they are super cheap to have (well until you have almost 100 of them to feed, then it gets expensive.)

Those are all awesome. Even cooler that you can keep them together!

I'm absolutely in love with the all-black Melanistic Eastern garter.
I know "business" is not supposed to be discussed in threads, but I'm just curious how much that one and the "Sky" would go for? I'd love to look into getting one sometime this year or next. Is "Sky" the name of that color mutation or that specific animal's name? I know nothing about Garters. :oops:

1. Sky is just his name. Puget sound garter snakes are usually blue like that, the "mutation" is the ones with red stripes.

I have a Thamnophis Radix (Midwestern garter) that is Axanthic, the green is missing yellow pigment, so it results in a blue snake.

2. Yes the baby garter was eating a fish. They all eat chopped up pinkies now.

3. common garters like Melanistic and Puget Sound snakes are around $100 each.

I really find this post fascinating. I live on the Sound and have only seen a couple wild guys. They were a dark black (fresh shed) with the yellow lines down the side. Can the blue and the red mutation be found in the wild?

Yes, I bought Sky from a guy who caught him in his yard.

Edit: Aaaaaa the Infernalis pictures Show up form me after i reloaded page :O Holly Molly I never suspect that garter snakes have so many Variety of morphs !!!! Me Thinking about One as Display Animal now :cool:

They are best as display animals anyways, most of them are intolerant to handling.

A few are mellow, mostly females. Males tend to be really flighty when picked up.

No I have not been to white plains in many years...

Very cool I don't think I ever realized how many different garters there are. I have always loved PS garters yours are gorgeous!
