What's the smallest snake that we can own that doesnt hurt when they bite
something that wouldnt even scratch us (definitely wont make us bleed) when bitten. :)

Re: What's the smallest snake that we can own that doesnt hurt when they bite
it doesn't hurt when my adult solomon islands bite me, but i do bleed because their teeth are super super sharp. I'm sure it wouldn't feel good if one of them got me right where my fingernail meets my finger, but its really not a big deal. They only tend to lash out if i startle them.

You may be looking at the wrong kind of pet...Ball Pythons seem to be as harmless as it gets. Unless you smell like food or get in their way when they're hunting of course.

Thread snakes, like the Brahminy blind snake. But you have to feed them ant pupae.

Re: What's the smallest snake that we can own that doesnt hurt when they bite
I don't thin k you would have a problem with a ball python.
Kenyan sand boas are interesting littlte snakes.

Re: What's the smallest snake that we can own that doesnt hurt when they bite
I've been tagged by an adult corn snake & two ball pythons... none of the bites actually hurt, and only left a tiny mark. I can't say what else hurts more or less, since those are the only snakes who've bitten me - but I wouldn't say either are a threat to ya. ;)

cool! thanks so much! i just wanna know. i have very good tolerance of pain, its just that, who really wanna get hurt right? lol! anyway, i'm glad you replied, i'm just concerned about the fact that maybe my ball python would tag me and i'll be like in sooooo much pain that i would have to hurt the snake just to get it off me. :( if that's not that painful, then i can remove him safe n sound. lol :D

Re: What's the smallest snake that we can own that doesnt hurt when they bite
When they bite, they usually don't hang on. If it's a feeding response maybe, but not likely from a ball python. Use a long set of tongs(12" or so) to offer food items. Keep your hands clean!

Re: What's the smallest snake that we can own that doesnt hurt when they bite
I was bitten and constricted by a large yearling (feeding accident).
It hurt, but not enough to do more than make me go 'ow...ow....aw, c'mon, let go'. lol
I slid his tail off of his face, tapped him on the nose a few times, and held still--and he let go.
I don't recommend trying to forcibly remove a snake that is biting and constricting--you are likely to hurt yourself a lot more, and you're likely to break the snake's teeth off, which could remain behind in your skin, since they are so thin. Just remain calm, and let it release you itself.
Even that bite took only 3 days to completely vanish--the wounds are extremely minor, so long as you don't try to pull away or pull the animal off of you.

Hognose are pretty awesome along with gray band kings. They are usually pretty laid back and almost never bite. they do not get huge either.

Speaking from experience: not fun. Though the tooth did work its way out enough that I pulled it out a week later.

When we use to have the albino Burms I got tagged by her when she was about 9-10 feet. Completely my fault... Just gotta remember to stay perfectly still when they nail yeah. If you yank away not only will you tear your skin but you'll have a hand full of teeth too.

I agree, but I did have to break that rule once when one of my kingsnakes started to swallow my finger. She didn't get hurt though, and that's all I care about.

Re: What's the smallest snake that we can own that doesnt hurt when they bite
As far as ball pythons go, they don't really cause pain when they bite. It hurts far far more when an ASF, mouse, or rat bites me.

I absolutely adore my hognose, and she's never bitten me... some of them (not mine) will put on a big show, but they're usually all bark and no bite. ;)

I second that! I've been bitten by rats and mice, and it hurts FAR more than a BP bite... one crazy feeding rat bit my friend, and she was bleeding profusely for like 5-10 minutes. :weirdface

Re: What's the smallest snake that we can own that doesnt hurt when they bite
I'm much more scared of getting bit by one of my breeder rats then any of my snakes. I own ball pythons, corns, and a blood. Their bites sting a bit, and you bleed. Unless you smell lke a rat or mouse you should be fine. Ball pythons normally take on balling up before trying to bite. Corns normally take to flight before trying to bite. Annnd well my blood is a big baby who is all talk and no action.

Re: What's the smallest snake that we can own that doesnt hurt when they bite
Anything with a mouth will bite if it feels threatened. I have around 100 snakes and the worst animal bite I've ever had was from my cat. I think the fear of being bitten is far worse then the actual event. My advise would be get the snake which interests you most, learn as much as you can about it, and don't worry about something that may never even happen.

+1 on this.
Hognoses don't normally bite for defense. So, it's a lot less likely you're gonna get bit by a hognose. The only hognose bite that I know of is from someone who intentionally stuck his finger in the hognose's mouth to see what would happen if he gets hognose venom in him.
Our hognose will hiss like a cobra, rattle like a rattlesnake and even strike - bumping his cute nose against your skin. But, never bit.

Re: What's the smallest snake that we can own that doesnt hurt when they bite
Thats a very good question kiddo! One that I don't think has been asked before, or not that frequently!!! I've been bitten by several snakes, and probably the one that was pretty much nothing was a baby corn. If you get your snake as a bay and handle it frequently, you really won't have to worry much about bites when it becomes an adult, because it will be used to being picked up and held.

Re: What's the smallest snake that we can own that doesnt hurt when they bite
I can't say enough about ball pythons as non-bite worry snakes. I've been tagged a number of times, and even the couple that bled microscopic drops of blood didn't hurt.
For example, at a reptile show in June, a lovely pastel female around 500 grams I was looking at tagged me. I didn't even know it until 15 minutes later when I noticed a few tiny red spots on my hand that smeared when I rubbed them. It took me another 3 minutes to realize it was blood, and then I started to laugh when I realized I'd been bitten and didn't know it.
My husbands 5 foot female got him on the wrist once, we had to pry her loose one tooth at a time { this was before we knew better } and by the next morning you couldn't even see the mark where she got him. I've been torn up by a kitten waaayyyy worse than any bp bite. Heck, I've been bitten worse by my cockatiel than any of my ball pythons!

Been there done that. Had a 9 and a half foot burm get me once. Honestly, I've had rat bites that hurt MUCH worse. Corn snakes are pretty good natured, and their bites dont hurt more than just enough to notice. In my experience when you get bit my anything other than a tiny baby, its enough of a shock that it doesn't really even hurt at all till after its all said and done. I'd say any of the smaller rat snakes or milk snakes aren't really gonna even leave much of a mark my the next day. The biggest thing really is to not pull away, and just let them let go when their ready. MOST snake bites will be a quick tag though.

Re: What's the smallest snake that we can own that doesnt hurt when they bite
The worst bite ive ever had was when my SD tic tagged me. He was only about 5 foot but he got a good grip on my wrist and coiled immediately. I just sat there with him on my arm until he was done. It really doesn't hurt. Dont worry about it.

Cats have one of the worst bites of any of the pets. Infections will usually set in within hours. I've had a friend who was working as a vet tech that had a cat knick a bone in his hand. He had to go to the hospital and be put on IV's.
