[For Blood & Short Tail Keepers]: Does your short tail have a preference in food?
My Borneo is an aggressive feeder, but when it comes to mice he flat out refuses. He'll down a rat (f/t, live, he doesn't care) in an instant, but only reluctantly takes live mice, and always refuses f/t mice.

I was recently reading a post on another forum about someone's blood who also seemed to prefer rats. This made me curious: do many short tail pythons prefer rats over mice?

*Multiple choice for those of you with large collections that may differ in feeding habits.

Mine are all beasts when it comes to feeding time lol. Even offered one a guinea pig for the first time and she slammed it like she has been eating them forever! :gj:

I've never had any problems switching stuff up with animals that are established feeders.

I fed some rabbits off the other week and it was like they were going out of style

I have only ever given my bloods rats even from hatchling as I always knew they would end up on rats anyway.

I have given them rabbits now and again, none of my bloods have ever refused any food. If I give them a rabbit I dont feed them for a month afterwards.

Bingo, my adults are on rabbits for the time being....

    One 1lb'er once a month

Going for the quality over quantity approach with the food:salute:

My blood is slow to strike, but he has a nice appetite. I think he is that way because it takes a lot out of them if they miss. Therefore, I believe he is slow to strike to be accurate. I fed him his first rat last month and he seemed to LOVE it. or, it could be that he was used to mice and his prey was bigger than he has seen, ever. Which ever, he enjoyed his meal greatly.http://i588.photobucket.com/albums/s...100_0642-2.jpg

My blood wont touch mice, he will only eat rats, and he wont ever eat while I am watching unless it is live, if its a thawed rat he will only eat it if I leave it outside the entrance to his hide, then I have to sneak into the kitchen and watch from a distance, he will peek his head out and start tongueing then begin nuzzling the rat for 15 minutes or so, then he will start to eat the thing without bothering to throw any coils, he wont even strike, he just sorta gulps it down.

But if its live, he will go berserk and attack the rat on sight, he usually squeezes hard enough to break its back within seconds, I was forced to feed him live to convince him to eat in the beginning because he was a rescue with a Respiratory Infection, and was severely underweight. Once he started eating regularly I switched him to the frozen rats, but not once has he gone for a mouse, not for lack of me trying though.

mine will destroy rats all day long but refuses to eat right sized baby rabbits and a mouse could sit in her cage for a day possably 2 but throw a rat in the tank and she comes out of her hide looking for the rat.

has anybody noticed might just be mine. but spends at least 90% of it's time after eating a big meal in it's hide on the warm side of the cage. i wake up at all different hours of the night to check on stuff and other then when she is hungry she is in one of her hides

Obviously because of his size I would not feed mice to my blood (he is 8 lbs so it would take a few to satisfy him ) however he is pretty much a garbage disposal, he will eat anything and everything without hesitation.
