That is true. I've seen them poison the whale meat so the whale hunters couldn't eat it.
But still, I'd be happier with NO dead whales.

Ma'am would be fine, the name is Mackenzie, but you can call me Mac :)
You would think, with all of the other animals for food, we could leave whales alone

Mac, if the world starts going towards another species someone else will get pissed off. yes i will prolly agree with them but its the way of nature, we must kill to eat, but we must not extinct

Re: Whale wars!
I'm okay with hunting as long as the animal in question can build its self back up.
-
Re: Whale wars!
He whalers are filling orders for endangered species though.

Re: Whale wars!
While I agree that the harvesting of whales is completely unnecessary, and I do not understand why Japan continues, every one on here needs to remember the guy who is doing this is a former PETA HSUS individual who completely disagrees with you keeping reptiles. When you give him props it's kind of like siding with those who are trying to destroy US... Just food for thought.

Re: Whale wars!
Been a thread on this already.... but think the japanese have been whaling waaaaayyyyyy longer than america has been around.... its just part of the culture!

He was a former green peace member. Not sure if there's a difference.

That doesn't mean it's ok or that it's a viable reason for the practice to continue. Foot binding, child brides, etc- those are all "just part of the culture!" for other countries but we don't excuse them because of the history.

Re: Whale wars!
I've said all of this before in a similar thread, but I guess I'll say it again. First of all, Japan is not the only country hunting whales. There are at least 2 others that do this as well. If it is part of their culture, then so be it. Secondly, Whale Wars is a joke. It's a "made for TV" drama. Supposedly, this has been going on for years, yet, only since it has beeen made into a tv show has it been escalating every season with both sides aquiring new "weapons" and tactics and such. They always say how they are willing to die for the whales, yet, how many have actually sacrificed their life to save a whale? How many times are people on this site reprimanded or criticised for even hinting at not abiding by a local, state, or federal law? Yet, people will openly support a group of eco-terrorist who, by their own admission, publicly claim to be pirates, and use pirate tactics (ie. initiating assaults, ramming, illegal boarding, etc...). They have classified themselves in the same group with Somali and Malaysian PIRATES, but they go unpunished. There are other groups who use media, as well as, strong-arm, and underhanded tactics to garner public support in the name of animal protection, HSUS and PETA. Do you support them as well?...
*End rant*

Re: Whale wars!
You know what they are doing; attacking other ships is considered terrorism no matter what your excuse for it is and they are being glorified by drama TV.
Why did we attack Afghanistan and Iraq in the first place? Oh ya Terrorism...
I admit I did watch the first episode and tried to sit my self through the second, but it didn't happen.

Re: Whale wars!
I just do not understand the point of the show? I am not for hunting whales. But like posted earlier this is a made for television drama. What was the point of poisoning the whale meat so it could not get eaten? That whale just went to waste... Great tactic!

Re: Whale wars!
The captain and crew are a bunch of incompetent fools. The whalers continuously make them look foolish and they are left sitting there with a blank look on their faces. I am not really for hunting whales, but I don't see why it is so different from killing cows or any other animal for food. From what I have read, the vast majority of the whales they kill are minke whales which are not considered to be endangered. Whether the captain and crew like what the whalers are doing or not, they are not breaking any laws. The japanese are not the ones attacking another ship. The whale wars crew should be arrested IMO.

Agreed. I'm certainly for stopping whaling, but what they're doing is having a negligible effect. I guess they're generating some negative publicity, but that's about it, and they're making themselves look like idiots in the process.
On some level, they ought to either quit altogether or become *real* pirates and start sinking and/or capturing whaling ships. (Note that I'm not advocating illegal activity - I'm just saying that if they want to accomplish something, it would be more logical to try a tactic that doesn't leave them watching helplessly as the whales get killed.)

Re: Whale wars!
The crew on whale wars are nothing more than glorified terrorists. Frankly, they should all be put in jail.

Re: Whale wars!
There whale wars idiots make me sick man. South Park Lampooning them put a big smile on my face.
Honestly I couldn't care less if other countries whale, hell I support.

LMAO, you saw that too!? Stan was so funny in that one!

Re: Whale wars!
Whaling is currently done by the following:
Inuit in Canada
Faroe Islands
Greenland
Iceland
Lamalera in Indonesia
Japan
Norway
Russia
Natives of St Vincent and the Grenadines
Inuit in the United States
It seems likely that the primary reason that whaling countries are continuing to whale in the face of international opposition is because there IS international opposition. Someone ELSE is telling them that they CAN'T. Of course they're defensive and they're going to keep on doing it.
Small numbers of animals taken by native cultures using traditional methods make up the rest of the story. Some of these countries are trying to hold on tightly to a cultural heritage. If pressure from the outside were removed...ie, they were permitted to engage in some controlled commercial whaling...then perhaps they could begin to view it more objectively.
Whale meat is toxic. It's horribly sad, but it's undeniably true. Many Japanese folks are already starting to realize that it's not worth it, and have given up eating it. The levels of mercury in whale meat are truly staggering.
They need to be given some breathing space to work on the issue internally. The meat is too hazardous be eaten, and once they're allowed to do so, it seems very likely that first the people will reject and then, finally, the government will ban its sale because it is a public health hazard. Tradition only goes so far. That one has been lost to pollution.

Re: Whale wars!
Starving country meat - whales sell for about $100,000, still starving?
Majority are Mink whales, that's ok - it's not ok, they ARE hunting endangered species.
It's there heritage - still not ok. If history has taught us ANYTHING then we should know that just becaus it's always happens doesn't mean it's ok.
You know what, everyone should strt slaying endangered species! Let's wipe the earth clean of everything but ourselves. Then let's see how long we last?
Sure the crew doesn't do much but they're doing a lot more then you or I. The show has to be dramatized or nobody would watch it. And year after year I would hope they get better, hence learning from you mistakes...
And you can't compare a whale to a cow. If cows were in danger of extinction (that means once they're gone they ain't never coming back ;)) you wouldn't catch me killing them.
If you let these people and countries wipe out whales why will be the next "delicacy"?
I think they're doing sumthing.

Re: Whale wars!
I think permitting commercial whaling would most likely reduce the incidence of endangered species being taken.
That having been said, I am totally with the 'Whale Wars' guys. I think the Japanese whalers should be stopped, because their activities are illegal.
