any catfisherman out there bait help
I AM, i love all fishing but cating is my favorite, every since i was a kid my dad and uncles would take, me, well sadly my 3 uncles all pasted of cancer in the same year and pops is getting old, sorrty to go OT, but its leading up to this, i used to uise chicken livers and clams(stuff inside them) and hall in 3 pound channel cat all night and an occasional oddity, well finally my pint is that stopped, last year,
this year i havn't caught a single bloomin cat, so my question is what do the fellow herpers use to catch their fish, don't need monster fish, just enough to keep my girl friends brother and friend, excited to go and keep him away from his druggy friends and show them real life.

Well when i was able to find places to catch catfish i used sonny's stinkbait or old shrimp. The shrimp was found by asking the local grocery store for outdated shrimp that they throw away anyway. Some will sell it to you some will not :gj:.Oh your not the only one not catching your normal fish.I have been fishing 5 times so far and have only caught 12 nice bluegills and 2 bass.I think all fish are confused because of this stupid weather :rolleye2:

Re: any catfisherman out there bait help
I always had a lot of luck with chicken livers, and for the larger ones goldfish or Israeli carp.

Re: any catfisherman out there bait help
Make sure you check your local Fish Advisory, I cant tell you how much those times help me figure out when to go fishing. As for bait, Good ol' liver catchs them all day long! As long as your bottom fishing that is, but I assume you are seeing how thats how you catch Catfish :P

Re: any catfisherman out there bait help
Here in MN, we don't use chicken livers or dip bait much or at all for channel cats. For some reason they prefer fish, usually cut bait chunks or fillets. Usually this means hitting up the river for some freshwater drum or some sucker species for fresh bait.
The flatheads here almost exclusively feed on live bait though will sometimes take cut bait. They are known to hit crankbaits of night-fishing guys chasing walleyes. The serious flat-ers here use bullheads since they are easy to keep live in a bait tank through the summer (white suckers are also a great bait but difficult to keep alive for long in heat). In Wisconsin live bluegills are popular for flats, but it's illegal to use whole or parts of gamefish in MN for bait.

Re: any catfisherman out there bait help
Last year, I discovered that, much to my amusement, the best way to catch catfish out of the local lakes was to throw out a big old grasshopper on an overcast day.
I think they were wise to the usual baits, but since no one was using grasshoppers, but there were grasshoppers all over the banks, they hit it before it touched the bottom. ^_^
The only downside to that is that the grasshoppers would be exited by these horrifying horsehair worm parasites when they hit the water, and that's something both fascinating and remarkably repellent, lol.
By the way, freshwater drum are DELICIOUS eating, so long as you eat them the same day you catch them. They taste like cod and only have a slightly firmer texture--nice and flaky. I understand that does NOT apply to drum from the Great Lakes, though, for some reason those have a nasty flavor. The ones around here are fantastic.

Re: any catfisherman out there bait help
I've always preferred live bait to catch catfish.
Shiners work well. I wish Louisiana would let us catch and use bream. Bream are considered sport fish and not allowed as bait.
My neice with some nice bait she reeled in!

Re: any catfisherman out there bait help
It might be the place you're fishing.
Sometimes places get fished out, or have other factors that are detrimental to a fishery.

Re: any catfisherman out there bait help
Try using strawberry soda and unsweetend corn flakes(mashed into stick balls)...The best formula out there!

Re: any catfisherman out there bait help
Yep, I've heard of Ivory soap. Supposed to be the oil it's made with or something.
Here in Missouri, we catch a lot of channel cat with chicken liver, but there is a catch to it. We use rubber bands to hold the liver on the hook. Yep, rubber bands. We buy those packages of like 500 little pony tail rubber bands for $1.00 at Wal-Mart. Thread your liver on the treble hook like usual, then you take one of those little rubber bands and wrap it around the liver and hook shank two or three times before you cast. You can catch two, sometimes three cats off the same piece of liver that way. And it's a lot harder for smaller fish to steal your bait.
Channel cats here also eat shiners, so they make good bait. Grasshoppers are also good, but not as good as Cicadas. Nightcrawlers also work well, but it's a lot harder to keep other fish from taking the bait.
The one that surprises most people is marshmallows. That's right, I said marshmallows. You'd be surprised at how many catfish will hit a marshmallow. Seems they've got a sweet tooth, like a trout does.

Re: any catfisherman out there bait help

Re: any catfisherman out there bait help
well to bait them in you can get a can of catfood and tie it to a rope and toss it over the side.... then usually you can catch em with livers. Ya I say a bp.net fishing trip to santee cooper would be awesome!

You basically want to make a dough. Crunch up the corn flakes and add soda. Not too much though. You just want enough to make a thick dough. Form a ball on your hook with it and cast it out. Suprisingly it will stay on your hook just fine if you make it right.
