Male BP size
My pastel male is over 1600 grams and I was wondering what size is the biggest male in your collection?
-
Re: Male BP size
right now mine is 1200 grams, and my other is around 750ish

Re: Male BP size
That is a big boy! My biggest is about 1255 grams!

Re: Male BP size
Along those lines, do bigger males breed poorly?
I was speaking with a fellow ball owner who breeds a little, and was told NEVER to let a male get over 900 grams, or he won't breed.
I took the advice with a grain of salt, so to speak, but this person was admant that any male over 900 grams is worthless to breed, and also said males should never be fed more than one adult mouse per week to make sure they don't get too big. :O
So, the 1100 gram proven pastel male I bought is actually worthless to me, because since he's that big he won't breed, hmm? :colbert:

Re: Male BP size
I used to have a 4 year old male that was 54" and 2300 grams...

Re: Male BP size
Yeah, I'm not terribly found of the "keep your males under 1000g" advice. I have heard that obese males are prone to cardiovascular issues, so I don't feed my big boys -quite- as much as they'd like... but the idea of actively seeking to bonsai my snakes? I'm not so much into.
That said, my 1000+g late 2008 black pastel boy managed to get that big on one large mouse every week. In autumn he gets two or three most weeks, because he's clearly hungry and I feel sorry for him--but he's even put on weight this winter, eating one mouse every other week. And he's still madly in love with my big female pied, since he tries to mate her every time I let them out together.
But he also shares a big 60 gallon "bachelor tank" with two other boys, and I see all three of them out cruising every evening. I'll eventually move them to racks when I start breeding next winter, but I gotta wonder... does age have anything to do with a male bp's virility? What about exercise?
I'm not about to try giving them viagra, but I gotta wonder.

Re: Male BP size
My lemon pastel male is over 2000 grams and is a breeding machine. He also doesn't go off feed during breeding season.

Re: Male BP size
my spider male is 1550g and he's a love machine...LOL

Re: Male BP size
My male didn't want anything to do with my females this year. But then again he got out of QT towards the end of April so I wasn't expecting anything from him this season.

Re: Male BP size
My 1400 gram yellow belly boy is a very aggressive breeder, much more so than when he was breeding at 900 grams last year.
A picture of Chocolate - 2000 gram male black back
He won't be the largest male as we have a 2150 gram male clown on hold that should be in house soon:D

My male is over 1800 grams. I've had him 4 years.

Re: Male BP size
Yeah, like I said I took that advice with a grain of salt.
I just can't see every single successful breeder out there with no males over 900 grams.

Re: Male BP size
I have one male at 933grams and he's a slow breeder. I have another male at 1380grams (probably more now, since last I weight was 7 meals ago), and will lock within 10 minutes of being with a female.
Over-weight can't be judged on grams alone. Thats like saying all female over 110 are fat, but what if their tall, or bigger build?!
Same goes will ball pythons. :)
