Sap in wood

Cincy is getting big by the day, and I realized she needs a new hide cause she never goes to the log anymore, and when she does, the things sitting on top of her like a hat. So I went to petsmart to pick up a new half log, got home and threw it in the oven for an hour or 2 at 200 degrees. Went to go take it out and I noticed small bubbles of sap coming out, probably about 3-4 bubbles. What should I do about this? How should I clean it or should I bake it longer?? I'm lost, I'm pretty sure sap is dangerous to balls, but I'm not too sure.

I would throw out the half log and get something more like a cave. Almost any alternative is cheaper, too. And you'll actually be able to clean it.

Yeah I've seen that thread a thousand times through other posts. The thing is, is that I am going for a realistic terrarium, so is there anything I can do about this, and as for cleaning something like that, I would just throw it in the oven again. So is there anything I can do regarding the sap?

If you can still return it, do so and get some rock cave hides or just head to the dollar store for some plastic bowls. Half log hides don't make good hides for ball pythons, that is probably why you noticed her not using it as much.

If you want the realistic viv, use the rock cave hides. Then you won't have the sap issue. As for disinfecting them again, you don't need to put it in the oven for so long. 30 minutes on 250* is plenty. You could also boil it if you have a big enough pot.

I have some rock hides that are brown and some type of hard plastic almost like ceramic. They would totally go with your look. I got that at a pet store here in the valley...I know pets mart doesn't carry it. Another option is to make something and then hot glue leaves to it or even spagnum moss for the look you are trying to go for. Also I just went to the dollar store and bought some new bowls....my hubby painted them in a type of camoflage. Hope that helps a little.

I have a pair of these from when I first go my bp. They look pretty good, but they're like $12 each.

Going with the above post, you could make the half-log really secluded. As for the sap, Idk. It's just sugar. Might feed bacteria or something.

Petsmart has started carrying the exo terra rock hides by me. Maybe they are carrying them in more petsmarts now.

try that one it's very realistic cheap and safe plus you can make it anyway you want

Basically, no matter what look you are going for, the snake's well being has to come first. So...sorry you wasted your money, but lose the half log. It's not an appropriate hide for a ball python. Sap is just one more reason not to use it.
