    Gross feeding stories?
I had a rather disgusting feeding event this past weekend. I've seen my share of gross things, but this is near the top.

I'm going along feeding my snakes F/T rats and I can always tell which ones are going to strike fast and which ones I have to do the rat dance. One of my larger females was chomping at the bit for her meal, so I was ready.

I grab the rat behind the neck and proceed to open the bin and dangle it for her, when she strikes just like I expected. The only thing is that I was still holding onto the rat... body. My snake completely decapitated her and she proceeded to (try) to strangle the life out of the head. I didn't know what to do so I just placed the body next to her hoping that she would get a clue and finish eating the entire meal.

No such luck. I came back about an hour later to a decapitated rat body. I tried dangling it in front of her because she was clearly hungry, but I guess the mangled corpse even grossed her out. I tried feeding the thing to my other snakes that didn't eat yet, but they would have none of it as well.

So I did what any snake enthusiast with multiple snakes would do... I fed it to my BCI. :P

    Eewwwwwwwww.....

I allowed a f/t mouse to sit on a warming surface a little too long. I knew I was in trouble when I noticed the belly was a bit swollen...but I went ahead and fed it off anyhow. Well....the snake grabs it enthusiastically, and the thing just explodes. Mouse guts draped over the rim of the water bowl and slimy goo all over the paper and the snake. Needless to say it reeked abominably! 'Twas the nastiest thing I've personally experienced with my own snake collection. :puke:

I ended up throwing that water bowl away. :weirdface

While attempting to feed my ball python a frozen medium sized rat, I have two disgusting stories.

    1. I picked the rat up by the tail. The skin on the tail came off, and you could see the muscle and bone.

    2. The rat was so squishy, that it sunk in on its self. Literally, and it stunk.

I've had some explode, or at least leak some blood.
I've had one strike so hard they rip off tails....but have yet to ever seen a decapitation.:O
Ewwww, hahaha, must have been quite an eye-full!

Haha. I've left mice in front of the heater too long before, and ended up with a room that smelled a little like cooked bacon, along with two adult puffy brown gooey mice, and one fuzzy. It was... bad.
I've also had my snake strike, coil, and just leave the mouse/ASF in her hide before. I didn't find those until a day or two after, when the smell hit.
Once I left a dead fuzzy in the euthanizing chamber because I have paper towel in there and it was white. I found that after a week, when I couldn't find out where that smell was coming from.
Oh, and since I breed my own rodents, I've found a large amount of dead rodents in their bins in varying stages of putridity.
You could say I've become accustomed to death, haha.

Had the exact same thing happen! It was awful, and the worst part was that the snake went ahead and ate the front half of the rat, then turned around and ate the back half, too! :O

One thing about it, that particular snake has NEVER refused a meal.

I don't think I would have minded if he'd refused that one...

Haha! My snake ate his mouse-'splosion too. I remember thinking, "That just can't feel right as it goes down..." :weirdface  Personally though, I was glad for at least that much of the mess to disappear without my having to touch it!

That's what I like about them. If it smells like food and wiggles, they are on it.

I've only had the skin come off the tail once or twice and a few squirt blood from the noses and get smeared around...

I've had a rat get degloved by accident... didnt' know they could do that until I looked it up afterwards. :weirdface

I've had one snake strike a live rat and manage to hit an artery in its neck making it bleed all over and I've had rats have blood coming out their noses/mouths once constricted.

Mine's not a gross as all of your's, but I found one of my feeding's to be rather icky.
I gave my girl her rat, she striked with in moments of it being in the box with her. As I peered it to make sure she had a nice tight grip, all I could see what the rat's eye's beginning to bulge out of it's head. As I looked in a few moments later, to still make sure she was fine, it looked to the point I seriously thought the rat's eye's where going to explode! It was so gross I couldn't look in anymore.

    Re: Gross feeding stories?
When I was still new to feeding f/t rats I thought it would be quicker to thaw the rat in warm water rather then letting it sit in room temp. Well as we all know, some shortcuts just should never (ever) be attempted. I noticed the rat was kinda "mushy". So I go to pop it in with my garbage can, she strikes and all the skin from the scruff of the neck peels back. It was pretty gross.

Worse part was the skin stuck to the tongs. My bp loved it though lol.

    Re: Gross feeding stories?
I fed my little yellowbelly a few weeks ago. Probably thawed the little one out too long because when I looked in her tub there were intestines draped over everything. It didn't explode, just the stomach wall must have gave and ripped. When I tried picking the intestines up, I forgot it was still attached and kept coming out of the rat pup. She still ate it, but it was close to making me gag. Especially when I had to pull the intestines out and cut them off, then watch her eat it like saghetti. Don't want to see that again, that's for sure.

Another was my larger female squeezed an ASF so hard that it's eye popped out of the socket, but she ate it so there was no clean up.

Also had some strike so hard that I'm left with rat skin on the hemostats.

Well I only had a couple of experiences with F/T before we made the switch and never really a "feeding" incident. However it was probably my second attempt at thawing one out. I thought...hmmmmm...:rolleye2:..I live in AZ...its warm out there. Im going to thaw it out on the car. So me and my brilliant thinking put the mouse...in the baggie on the back of the black car. I went out and checked it one time and it still could warm up a bit more. When I went to check it the next time....it had exploded. UGH.... I think that was one of the last times attempting to feed F/T. Just can't seem to shake that mushy feeling and the look of that bag out of my head. ......

Wait till they kill the rat start to eat it and the hide it under their paper and lay on top of it. You look in there and there a happy snake sitting on the heat spot..Leave to go on vacation the next day.. come back and the smell is undeniable.. then you start the hunt.. :(

i dont have a gross story, but i have a funny one!.
so I put my snake,Boo, in a 10 gallon when i feed her. I read that this makes it less likely shell bite in her normal cage thinkin my hand is food, cus shell be associating the other tank as feeding place. Boo is a baby btw.
So last night I was feedin her a f/t "hopper" mouse.
she is a really good eater she starts showin interest in the mouse before i even have it halfway into the tank.
Anyhow. I also have 2 cats, a 2 yr old and a 7month old kitten...
The kitten is VERY interested in the snake. Sat there next to us and watched Boo eat. as Boo was finishin up i went to wash my hands..I had touched the mouse so I was really anxious to wash up.
I come back and the kitten is INSIDE the tank. layin there next to Boo.
Boo is just chillin, hasnt even really noticed the cat yet.
LOL!!!! I quickly scooped up Boo and put her back in her home. But it was sooooo cute....soo funny...and scary at the same time. I will have to wash my hands AFTER i put Boo back from now on.

Had one of my male mojaves who is a picky eater take the rat pup and stuff it under the aspen so I couldn't see it anymore.. I never bug him because he is a picky eater, but I started smelling something awful, filled my whole condo with this smell.. I always check the morning after to make sure he ate it, I looked in, didn't see anything, was happy and moved on with my day..

No, it was buried, and it was so awful! I never want to smell that again!

    I don't use aspen anymore...

    I've got a couple,

One time when feeding this Hognose I used to have he made the pinky burst its guts out, which was a tad nasty, although I don't get grossed out by that stuff.

Another time I was trying to feed my male normal Ball python a jumbo mouse (F/T) but he wouldn't take it, but something sort of odd happened.. I guess you can say the mouse had her menstration cycle:rolleyes:

Ever forget to take a refused F/T out?

    Yeah.

    Don't.

It was a tie between that and when my first snake regurged. I have seen and smelled many a nasty thing. And I'm a nurse, so when I say that, believe it. Far nastier and smellier than most people know is possible. And I experience these things quite often with an iron stomach. But that literally made me vomit. Granted I was pregnant at the time and just out of my weeks of hyperemesis, but still. It was gross in a big way.

When we first got our male rescue he was very very sick. We'd never owned a snake before and I'll admit we didn't do any research before getting him. SO I'd never dealt with F/T before but my vet told me to thaw it in hot water. Well it was the first meal he had taken from us and my boyfriend was dangling it by the tail in his tank and he came up and tried taking it by the stomach away from Mike without striking and then changed his mind and took it from the face instead. He had ripped the stomach wide open and its guts were hanging out and he smeared it all over his enclosure. Luckily he got it all down without it falling completely out.

Let me just say I like feeding live SO much more than F/T... I never forget a live rat, and the F/T just smell sooooooo bad when you do forget.
