Test #1: Rat in Same Room As Snakes

I observed my snakes' behavior since I first got my rat. I kept my rat in my room and tried to see if there was a change in my snakes' behavior, like if they were in a feeding response when I go to pull them out of their tubs.

Some people get worried about having rodents in the same room as their snakes.

From what I've observed, every snake in my room (6 snakes) had no change in their behavior when I went in to get them out of their tubs. The two closest to my rat were my BCI and Kenyan Sand boa, but every time I took them out they were just fine and acted very calm.

This may not be the case for ALL snakes, but testing 6 of my snakes proved for me that the myth was not true.

I've always heard that a snake would be more aggressive if you had the room scented with rodents if you kept rodents in the same room. I guess that is most likely untrue:)

It's true that you'll hear both sides. Some claim 'more aggressive', some claim 'no difference'. Others, like myself, share an opinion that they don't notice the snakes being more aggressive, but notice a better feeding response.

With one rat, I'd doubt you'd notice any difference. When you start increasing your numbers and they really start putting off a noticeable scent, then you'll be able to get a better idea.

When I first moved my rats in the same room as my snakes so many years ago, I thought that I'd at least notice a touch more cage aggression from the snakes, but so far, so good. :)

You need to get your little dude rat a buddy, by the way. They get lonely. :P

Is it possible that they just get used to the scent being there? Then pet store down the street has all of there rodent tanks on the bottom shelf and all of the reptiles on the two shelves above and they never look like they are actively hunting. But then again, they may be too stressed to care...

i have my rats and snakes in the same room and honestly i see no difference then when i bought the rats and didnt breed them (other than not being totally broke e/o week) here is my setup

But I have since added paper around the rat tank lol

I kept Thousands of Rodents in the snake room/rodent room, the mean ones were mean and the nice ones were nice. I doubt the Mice,rats, or ASFs would have made any difference on their attitude if they were gone.

As for one rat not really being enough for scenting, the rat would be on the opposite side of my room (room isn't that big though) and I'd still smell the scent of rat no matter where I was in my room LOL. I moved him to the tv room (QT room) so I would have more space in my room:) (for you know what LOL... snakes everywhere!!).

I have 24 pet rats in the same room as the snakes and like I said, no more aggression than usual. I just noticed a few of the more difficult eaters being a little less...difficult.

As for you smelling the rat, if you keep them really hydrated, you will find they smell less. Give them fruit and veggies, flavor their water with vanilla or some other safe extract. There are several other things you can do as well. I just litter train them and then clean the cages on a daily basis, seeing as they are in my room. :P

i have asf, mice, and rats in the same room, about 5 feet apart from each other, and havent noticed anything

Same observation as pretty much everyone here...rats are in the same room as the snakes, no change in behavior.

I have all my mice in the same room as my snake. Including a tank of mice under my snake's tank. She acts the same.

I keep my pet rats in the same room as my snakes and I've never noticed them getting aggressive. Then again, my guys are both rescues and have very weak feeding responses. Before I got the rats I tried pre scenting the room and never got the least bit of a response from it.
