cay caulker boa'a
Does anyone have information on these or I should say does anyone have any experience with these boa's. The size and color is what has me interested in them. One article says they are good beginner snakes while another says the young ones are nippy. I havent seen much information from anyone who actually has one or had one. They say they only get about 5 feet tops which is what I like about the ball python. The one I have is great, very good disposition, seems to tolerate being handled whenever very well and eats well as long as I dont try and feed him to big of a rat. He just doesnt get out much on his own unless he's hungry.

Re: cay caulker boa'a
They are a bit different than most boas. They have sensitive digestive systems so do not overfeed them. The prey should not be any bigger than their girth. Feed every 14 days until they are about 8-9 months old, then try feeding every 10 days and see how they handle it. They are slow growers, so don't expect them to just pack on the size fast like a BP does.
As far as being nippy, meh. Mine tagged me a few times the day I got him and was tring to get him out of his shipping container. He hasn't struck at me since, but I treat him like my other boas. When I want to get them out, I use a hook to raise their head then just reach in and pick them up. If you get a baby, their heads are so small that they can barely get your finger anyway. Also, after feeding, I don't handle him for at least 3 days, just to give him a little extra time to digest. Hope this helps...

Re: cay caulker boa'a
Yeah mine hissed a few times here and there up to about a year old. Only bit me during a feeding mode though. After a while he was puppy dog tame. I read somewhere years back that they fed their adults once a month. Due to a pattern of bird migrations on and off the island food was not always readily available. Hence they would have periods of natural fasting and their metabalism is much slower. So definatly dont stick the food to them hard. After 3yrs my male was about 33-35", so pretty small, but not an adult yet. Their ability to color change is really neat too. They can be a dark brown one min and a bluish silver the next. Very beautiful animals and very underrated.

Re: cay caulker boa'a
Where can you find them? Anyone have a care sheet? I love boas but size has been an issue, this could be perfect!

Re: cay caulker boa'a
There was 2 at the Columbia Repticon back in March. Ben Siegal was one. Somebody also had a patternless Crawl Cay that was insane. Dont remember how much it was but was $$$. I think two of the most respected breeders are Rio Bravo and Cutting Edge Herp. Mine was from Rio Bravo stock and was the lightest colored one I have yet to see. There still pretty rare but if your persistant they can be found without to much trouble. A few pop up on Kingsnake from time to time.

Re: cay caulker boa'a
I paid 275 for my male back in 2005. The ones at the Repticon show were 125 for one and 250 for the other I think. A bigger breeder I would guess would be ~300-350. Husbandry is very much like a BCI except with more conservative feeding i guess. Try Cutting Edge Herps and Rio Bravos website for better info though.

Re: cay caulker boa'a
I looked at both sites, but couldn't seem to find where they were for sale...Any photos of your male? I'm pretty pumped, maybe this weekend at Tampa Repticon I'll bring home my first boa

Re: cay caulker boa'a
Give me a little time and I will see if I can find my old camera. Got a few on there I think. And there websites are a little hard to navigate I'll see if I can dig any info up when I finish with work.

Re: cay caulker boa'a
Well found the camera but the card is with my wife and she is out of town. Ill try to post it in the future when I get ahold of it. Cutting Edge Herp is showing expected litters in Aug. Checking Kingsnake today there is 2 pairs of adult breeders if you want to go that route. I really want another one as well and if the right one comes along I dont think I could resist.

I got mine from Vin Russo at Cutting Edge. To find the availablity list on his website you have to look at the column on the right hand side, then scroll all the way down until you see "Boa and Ball Python Availability" and click on that. Rio Bravo doesn't have their availability posted. It is best to contact both of them directly by e-mail or phone and tell them what you are interested in, and they will tell you what they have available, or, are expecting to be born...

Re: cay caulker boa'a
Hello, everyone! New to this site. Anyway, I picked up a trio of Caulker babies in January from Ben Seigel. Then I picked up a giant 6' female from Glades Herps about a month or so ago. I went with the Caulkers because I also thought that they would grow to only about the size of balls also. This isn't the case! even the dwarf boas grow larger than balls, and require larger caging. In other words, don't plan on housing adult females in 41 qt tubs! Three weeks ago I ordered a 4x2x1 cage from Animal Plastics. That being said, these snakes are great!! My female is a big lap-dog. Great pet. The 3 babies have only occassionall been a little hissy and nippy, but only when in shed or if surprised. If I ignored the threat display & grabbed the snake anyway, they calmed right down. I've had a lot more attitude from a few of my balls. They also seem to be sometimes picky feeders like balls, grow even more slowly, and are shy and stay in their hides like balls. Once out, you don't hold them, they hold you! You can almost wear them like jewelry. Great snakes!

Re: cay caulker boa'a
Haven't figured out how to post the pics yet. Maybe Robbie at Glades Herps has some of her, and could help us out. I've only had her for about 5-6 weeks now. I'll try and get ahold of him monday to see if he has any to post. If not, maybe I can get a friend to help me out.

Re: cay caulker boa'a
Hello,
I have a Cay Caulker Boa that is almost a year old now and have had him for almost 10 months. He is so tiny, I still have him in a shoebox size plastic storage box with a secure lid. The first month or so I had him he hissed whenever I opened his enclosure, but he has now calmed down to be very docile. I originally got him for the same reason, I liked the coloration and did not want a boa that got too huge. I got mine from Vin Russo, Cutting Edge Herp, he obtained his animals from Gus Rentfro. Any Caulker Cay boa in the United States should have a paper trail back to Gus Rentfro, as he has been the only one within the U.S. to legally obtain these boas.
The temp and humidity parameters are similar to the ball python as well. I keep a hot side 90-92F and the cold side 80-82F. Humidity between 60-80% seems to be doing well for him. The main difference is that they will eat less at a time and less frequently than a ball python. During the warm months, I have been feeding hopper mice every two weeks. Young snakes can be fed once every month during the winter. The key is to not overfeed, and stick with smaller meals for a while. They should keep their thin appearance (when compared to pythons and other boas), adult males will only be as thick as a broom handle! Good luck.

Picture
I forgot to include a pic of my Cay Caulker. It was taken recently, but sorry about the quality. It was taken with my camera phone.

That's great,
I am very happy with this boa, Vin has good quality animals and is a good guy to deal with. Now what to get next...

Hi, this is Brian's friend. I could assure you that his Cay Caulker is just as large as he says she is. Here are some photos that we took a few days ago.

Re: cay caulker boa'a
Thanks for the pics. I bet she is beautiful after a shed. I wasn't doubting the size. You just don't get to see very many full grown adults around. My little guy has a loooong way to go... :gj:

Re: cay caulker boa'a
Oh I know you didn't mean anything by that. I just wanted to make sure everyone saw how huge she really is. Everytime I see her I'm amazed. I'm really hoping Brian will breed her soon, last time I saw this lady she was crawling all over me like a puppy. I've never seen or held a nicer snake.

Re: cay caulker boa'a
Thanks again, Kim, for posting the pictures!

Re: cay caulker boa'a
And...oh, yeah.. she IS beautiful after shedding; and unfortuneately, she's deep in shed. Her belly is now really pink, and she has a glossier look to her. Her saddles are normally dark, but there is normally more of a contrast. In other words, her background is more of a medium gray instead of a darker gray.
