    New pickup today!
I am getting a new bp off of Craigslist today. I know what you are probably thinking...but, it's just a normal, and I am getting it for free.

The current owner says the snake is a normal that is 3 years old -- which she has had for the three years. She "thinks" it is a female because of the size and growth rate. So I am hoping she is right because I have a normal male who is ready to breed, and my spider should be ready next year.

The current owner just got done with a two year college, and will be leaving home in the fall to complete her school. She can't take the snake with her, so she is getting rid of the snake.

She sounds like a responsible owner, and wasn't looking to make any money -- which is why it is free. The only requirement she had was that the snake goes to a good home. She interviewed several candidates, and she chose me.

Hopefully all goes well, and it is a healthy snake. I will try to post some pics later today after the pickup.

BTW -- does anyone know of someone in the Rochester, MN area who could pop or probe the snake? I've never done it, and it kinda scares the crap outta me!!

congrats. Don't be surprised if the snake is not in the greatest condition. I hate to say that but even ppl with the best intentions sometimes have a different type of view on how to care for them. Just my experience with craigs list. :( But I am happy to hear you are getting a new little baby.

I had already considered that. I figure this is a win-win situation for me and the snake -- I get a free snake, and the snake gets an excellent home!

Hopefully the snake is in good health though, and it won't turn into a rescue project! If it does, I guess the snake is better off in my hands then.

I just got home with the new snake. It looks healthy, but I think it has been underfed. The owner figured it was about 3 years old, and it only weighs 683 grams. It has a little bit of stuck shed, and it has retained eyecaps. I'll have to work on getting those off -- should I do it right away, or let it settle for a week, feed it, and then work on the shed and eyecaps?

Here are a few pics I snapped quick before putting it to bed...

IMO I would just let him/her settle in a bit then feed.
wouldn't mess with the stuck shed eye caps, allow it to go into shed again and just bump the humidty up a bit more then giving it a chance to take care of its self.

    and don't forget to QT.

    just my :2cent:

    and congrats :)

I would just let her settle in for the week and keep her humidity around 60% or so. Some of it may come off on its own. If not, then try a wet pillowcase or wet towel.
Nice looking snake. Nice light colors...

She is beautiful!! Congrats again!! I would give her a week or so and then try to feed her. Make sure that you keep her humidity up. I think she will probably shed fairly quickly due to the retained shed and the eye caps, not to mention the fact she will gain weight pretty quickly. A little trick I do is put a wet wash cloth over their warm hide when they go blue. You could do that right now though she might just rub on it and get the stuff off.

Congrats on the new addition. She is very pretty. I like the nice light colors. Let her settle in and get some food in her. She is probably gonna eat like a beast for awhile!

I disagree--I would soak her, and get those eyecaps off if at all possible. She's not that likely to eat if she has retained eyecaps. If you can get them off, let her settle for a week, then give her food. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother trying to feed her until she sheds them. Just MHO.

I would remove the eye caps also...soak her for about 30 minutes or so and if the caps are still there fold a piece of scotch tape and place it over the cap and pull off slowly...the cap should come off with no problem..

I've taken in a couple of snakes in this condition.
I too would do a humid soak in a tub right away so the snake can eat after a week in it's new home.

Good luck with her and congrats, she is a nice looker :gj:

Do not use tape on the eyes. You don't even need to mess with the eye caps. We get this all the time here. If a soak and a wet towel or pillow case do not work to allow them to come off on their own then raise humidity to at least 65 or 70 percent until next shed and they will come off. The eyes are much too delicate to mess with. In 15 years i have had many stuck caps and i have never needed to do anything other than higher humidity and maybe some ointment on the eyes once a day if they are being difficult. The snake will eat regardless. Especially if it has been under fed. Give it a few days to a week to settle and offer a meal.

    Re: New pickup today!
Thanks for all the advice. I think I will just let her settle and hopefully she eats in a week.

Humidity is not a problem -- we are getting a nice hot/humid heat wave in Minnesota right now.

If the eyecaps don't come off after the next shed, then I will explore other options.

    Thanks everyone!
