Would you purchase an 800 gram 08 female?
I recently picked up a male mystic and have a few big normal girls I want to line up with him to next winter. I would also like to possibly breed him to a female mojave next season yet don't have a girl as of yet. So I was thinking I could pick up an adult if I get the chance to find one. I've only found one so far an 08 girl that only 800 grams. Not sure what her history is yet awaiting a reponse from the seller. I wouldn't think she'd be a sure thing to be ready by this coming winter yet also not sure how many others would pop up for me to have a chance to purchase. So would you by a 2 year female @ 800 grams?

    Thanks
    Xavier

If I liked her pattern, yes I would buy her.
You can feed her well and she'll pack on the weight.
Even if she doesn't go the first year you have her, there's always next year....

At 800g she should be able to next season as long as she does not go on a fast for you, but I would bet if you wait a little while you will plenty of normal proven breeders for sale soon. Once egg laying season is over you should see plenty. Just make sure you trust the seller and he is not selling you a poor layer or a female that is in need of a year off from breeding.

Normals aren't a concern for me. I have 5 nice adult girls 3 proven 2 of witch are over 2,500 grams. I want a chance at producing mystic potions in 2011. I suspect I won't find many adult female mojave's.

I really don't know. 800 grams for a 2 year old female seams pretty small. What is he doing, under-feeding her or what? That dosn't seam right to me.

My Male Pastel is a late 2009 and he weighs like 260 grams already. At this pace, my male will be bigger than that female in a shorter time.

But who knows, all snakes are different so maybe he is doing everything right but the snake just isn't growing fast.

I have a December 2008 Ivory female that only weights 780 grams. But she's in fine shape and in good health - she just don't eat that much..

I don't see any problem in buying the snake you mention if it is healthy and everything. And I'm sure she will be ready to breed next year..

I am sure if you looked around you can find an 07 or 08 normal female that weighs way more than 800 grams. Just look around some more. Don't rush into buying this 800 gram one just because its all you can find right now.

I don't see anything wrong with an 08 being 800 grams. Some snakes start slow and not everybody power feeds to see how young a female they can breed.(IMO)
If I bought her, I would plan on not breeding her this coming season.

Sorry, I missed that part of your post. If it's a mojave and the price is not too crazy I would definitely get it.

What's with everyone trying to power feed a snake just to get it up to breeding weight. Seems wrong.

My ~Nov 2008 male is only 290 grams. He eats once a week and is nice and healthy.

I agree that most people probably overfeed their snakes, but if your snake hatched in Nov 08 and is only 290g you are underfeeding it.

Yeah I was going to say the same thing....

How is a November 2008 snake less than 300 grams? lol

Do you feed it a pinky every 21 days or something?

Not directly. I was going off of this:

"You can feed her well and she'll pack on the weight." Well yeah, feed a snake and they gain weight. Feed them "well" to pack on more weight?

    And:

"My Male Pastel is a late 2009 and he weighs like 260 grams already. At this pace, my male will be bigger than that female in a shorter time."

My Nov 2009 Male Pastel is about 230.

Both my snakes eat mice and sometimes rat pups. They eat every 7 days.

lol so wait up.... We both have pastels that are the same exact age, and I am powerfeeding mine because mine is 30 grams heavier than yours? Is that what you are trying to say?

I feed my snake once every 5 days, 10-15% of his body weight. I weigh out every mouse I feed him to make sure its the right size.

Alright, I'm the queen of slow feeding but that just sounds off.
800 grams for an '08 is fine for me. I'm in no rush to breed and I feed steadily and often less than most people do..
However. 290 grams is a definite red flag.. I think you should get a parasite smear on that one or up the food size. That growth rate is very slow, and mind, I am ok with healthy slow growth rates.

No, I am not trying to say that any one person is power feeding.

But from reading a lot of posts, it seems that the "idea" seems to be "feed as often as the snake will take it, to get the weight up as fast as you can, so you can breed as fast as you can"

And I was going from memory, but my Nov 2008 male is 318.4 grams, not 290.

Tzeentch - Where in South Jersey? Brick, Ocean County here.

300 Grams for an '08 still sounds small to me and I am a slow grower myself. I have a couple mid summer 2009's that are sitting in the 300-350 gram range but not an '08!
