    I got a variegated/dalmatian!!!
Oh I'm so excited! These have always been my absolute favorite marked rats, but I never thought I would get one! I've never seen one in person and I've only seen very few on the net. I'm so excited!!!

Here he is. Of course it's a he  Oh well, I suppose it will be much faster to spread his genes this way. His mom was an agouti self (a wild colored rat) and dad was a fawn caped. Would he be considered an apricot color?

It was a pretty crazy litter, a little of everything!

I've got a question for your color experts. I usually get fawns, but this litter gave me these dark fawns, I'm guessing apricots(?) and then I also go this little bugger. What on earth color is he? I was thinking he must be a dilute of some sort, but I can't figure it out.

And the two I really want to keep, but I might have to feed off the black one because it's a boy too!!! This is the first little I've ever gotten selfs that weren't agouti selfs! I'm pretty happy about his litter other than all the cool ones are boys!

I actually copied the link, pasted it a new window and deleted the i587 before the web address.

Huh....I wonder why it is being a pain. Photobucket is being ridiculous to me!!! Every other website is working great for me, but not photobucket :taz:

Ok now they are all working for me! Hopefully they show for everyone else now!

Oh my....I apologize for the horrid spelling/typing. I work night shifts on Saturday and Sunday night and I can hardly hold my eyes open. I've only had 2 hours of sleep since yesterday afternoon :tears:

thats awesome! right now im slowly trying to convert my whole brreding colony to dumbos. i have one mother thats a dumbo so ive saved this one self male that is het, and 4 of his sister(het as well). the girls are just getting to breeding size so well see what we can get in the next month or two!

EDIT: also i have a female that i kept back that is hooded, kinda like you light one but she is extremely light. at first glance it looks like an albino, but if you look really hard with good lighting you can see the pattern. its crazy

Oh dear, I haven't found ONE that explain it all. I have to use several. I do have a "fancy rat" book that my granny gave me that I usually go by. It's a little bit aged so it doesn't have all the colors/marking that are out today. I've yet to find a good site that has all the colors.

I remember reading that name somewhere, I'll have to do some more researching.... I'm pretty sure on the apricot because it said when they are babies it's very orange.

Oh I love dumbos!!!! I haven't found any dumbos around here and I'm really scared to bring new rats into my colony :( Good luck with the dumbo colony!!! Yeah, I can imagine at first glance once they grow up that it would be extremely hard to see the hood! I would keep him if he was a she. I'm sure I'll get another one of these days. I want to breed that variegated back to mom and see what I get!

Oh yes, you should start breeding them! :D They are so cute and it's so much fun to play with genetics especially when you get something new! All I had were hooded, caped, albino, and two agouti selfs till this litter!!! And my only colors were fawn, black, and agouti. I even had 3 funky hoodeds that I held back to start breeding for really wide striped hoodeds, but once I saw that variegated boy those three got fed off :D

The little black one is extremely cute! I just don't know if I could justify having 4 male breeders! Granted one has been due to die for about 6 months now, he just refuses to let go, but I'd still have 3 male breeders....hmmm, tough choice for sure!!! I would give him to you if I could!!!

Very cute! This is what I love about breeding rats. The amazing colors and patterns they come in. Sometimes you get some really great surprises. For instance, I bred my amber self male to my agouti berkshire female and got a mix of all sorts of colors and patterns. Black hoods, black berks, agouti variegated, a silver (not sure what his official color was) blazed, black hooded blaze, a dumbo albino, and agouti berkshire.

Oh my gosh that dumbo is sooooo cute!!!! I wish it wasn't so ridiculously expensive to ship rats :(

To anyone who loved the little black berkshire he won't be food. My mom made grabby hands before I even showed her a picture!!! I might have to send a girl with her so she can get some babies out of him. Put him to work!!!

He's not a dumbo. His dad was a dumbo...he just carries the trait. Its recessive. So, when bred to one of my variegated blue het dumbo females he should produce about 25% rex, blue, variegated, dumbo babies...or that is the hope.

Oh my bad, I missed the het part. He sort of looks like a dumbo even though he's a het! I would love to have a dumbo, but all our fancy rat breeders in the area quit breeding :( Good luck with him! Be sure to post the pictures of his pretty babies! Do you know if variegated is recessive? I'm guessing that it is since I've never had a variegated before

Variegated in my experience seems to be co-dominant. All of my variegated animals produce some variegated animals no matter who I pair them with.

As for that male, I'm not breeding him. I am trying to find a home for him actually. So, he won't be making any babies for me. His sister will, LOL, but not him. I really can't use a rex male in my breeding program. His genes spread too fast and I just can't use that many rex animals. So, I only breed rex females.

I need some high quality recessive hairless.

    You have any of those?

It seems that everyone around here has the co-dom hairless. I could have those coming out of my rear end if I let them breed.

Just a reminder we do not allow sales discussions outside the for sale section or the PM system - this includes adoptions and animal exchanges.

I try to avoid breeding "morphs". I am doing my best to weed out the albino genes from my stock. However, many areas it is actually illegal to own colored rats....I was shocked to hear such a thing. So a few tubs of albinos still exist in my building.

Looks like a fawn, possibly a beige. It's hard to tell before they molt.

Keep in mind that high whites are at risk for megacolon. I'd breed him/her to selfs, hoodeds, etc. It's a horrifying experience dealing with an entire litter of megacolon babies. They aren't even worth feeding off as they aren't digesting their foods correctly.

Either way, very cute little guy. I've been working with masked rats lately, and I'd love a fawn masked rattie. I've never actually seen one before. :)

    Re: I got a variegated/dalmatian!!!
The variegated aren't really in the same boat as other "high whites".

They're more of an expansion of the hooded gene and not so much of a high white berk or berk blaze.

They're usually just as healthy/hardy as regular hoodeds.

    I'll have to respectfully disagree.

Variegated can be variegated hooded, variegated masked, variegated dalmatian, etc. Each line comes with or without it's risks of a genetic flaw (megacolon, etc.).

Dangerous high white genes usually are just white markings where there shouldn't be white. Not saying her line or your line carry the genes, just saying they are something to watch out for.

I wouldn't really refer to them as an expansion of the hooded gene either. The genetics are quite different.

While I agree SOME lines are just as healthy, not all are. The safe step with breeding any high white, odd eyed or variegated line is to breed them back to a self. Or if you are trying to prove your line out as a safe, megacolon free line, inbred high white father to high white daughter. It will bring out any genetic flaws that might me lurking in the background.

Just for general information, this is where I get a lot of info on colors and markings: http://www.hawthorn.org.uk/varieties.asp

You can also check here: http://www.afrma.org/fancyrm.htm

    and here: http://www.nfrs.org/index.html

Keep in mind that these are "show quality" standards and that your rat(s) may or may not have all of the specified markings or colorings. :)
