Hydrogen Peroxide bath.

Ok so I don't actually own a red tail yet, but after handling my uncles the other day I will be acquiring one after I get all the balls I want.

I was curious though, my uncle said that he gives his red tail a peroxide bath every other month. I was curious is that normal? Are you supposed to do that with red tails. If so why.

Just thought I'd ask xD :P

That's what I thought! I didn't say anything because I'm still new to this, I only have a single ball. But I couldn't come up with a single reason why this would be a good idea....

A soak would be fine... IN WATER.
There is no reason to use Hydrogen Peroxide.
I'm sure that isn't good for the snake...
i could be wrong...but it sounds... like bad news.

Did he say why he does it? Did a reptile vet tell him to do so for some reason? I've heard of people using it for scale rot, but never heard of it as a preventative measure.

He said that he just does it every month or so...That its "good for the skin and helps in the shedding process when she does shed." It seemed very strange, the snake had mouth rot a few months ago but that has been done and taken care of for a while now....

ITs not good for their scales what so ever. It actually dries it out and can cause problems.


I dont even use it on my self. Only use betadine due to peroxide and alcohol is known to kill living tissue during healing process.


No reason to ever soak a snake in anything other than water.

This is very true all the vets I worked with tell people to not use it because it kills healthy tissue.

I agree, don't use peroxide...

And since part of your original post made me laugh, I put it in the Completely Out of Context Thread... :rofl:

I third the notion. The only additive I would ever use in a bath is povidine iodine ie betadine and not just for the hell of it.

Yeah I thought it seemed very strange, hence the reason I asked. XD there are alot of red tails on KSL classifieds in slc xD I'll probobly get one of those instead of a baby. :P

I would suggest going with something around 1 year old. You know it is an established eater, but still small enough to learn it's personality, character, and handling before getting too large...
