I caved
Hi,
OK I managed to sell a whole mess of snakes today for a good price so I decided to treat myself to some cute.
Total impulse buy I am ashamed to say - I only saw it yesterday.
It is tiny - only 3-3.5 inches nose to tail tip. :wuv:
So can someone tell me what the pattern is called on him - I think the seller said buckskin?

I may need to tweak the enclosure slightly but want to let him settle in a bit first.
They said in the shop he had been eating crickets and Komodo crested gecko diet so I have made up a little of the komodo but have also ordered some repashy base and some papaya flavour ( wanted mango but the seller was out ). How do you find out which flavour they like as at £8.99 ( $13.06 ) a bag buying all the flavours could get expensive. :weirdface
Since I think it is too small to sex I have decided to call it Lucien and change it to lucy if it turns out to be female.
So far lucien has had a drink from water droplets when I misted the tank but hasn't come down from the top of the viv to look at the food or the waterbowl.

Re: I caved
That is one cute crestie Derek. I never paid attention to geckos at all until I saw Steffe's cresties. Now I think they are the cutest things with those big eyes :D

Re: I caved
Oh man so pretty! I keep avoiding anything Bearded Dragon related because I know I'm gonna end up getting one! Which I do want one, but not now :taz:
EDIT: Monica is really not helping with her Avatar... LOL.

Beardies are expensive little buggers their first year. You might be better off getting a crestie like that one up there lol.

My hands get clumsy from time to time. It just the way I am. I dont think a small lizard is a good idea. My friends have Leos and Crested. I try not to handle them too much lol. I really like Beardies, but not now!

Re: I caved
Looks like a Harliquin to me, but I could be wrong, they are bloody cute! The misses and I went to a show a few months back to pick a crestie up, came home with two lol... Great lookin crestie.
Cheers

Re: I caved
I knew you'd eventually get a crested! :D Cute little one too--it is a harlequin. The colors may change some as it grows, but it just depends on the genetics.

Re: I caved
Nice harlequin!
"Caving in" is so easy with crested geckos. You won't regret it, I guarantee you :D

Just get the complete diet. It's the one that you don't have to mix--the flavor and base is all together in one mix. It's easier and pretty much all rhacs will eat it. :)

Re: I caved
i use repashys 1 part which is flavor all in one. all 4 of my rhacs love it. thats a good looking harlquin, not fired up tho. get a pic at night itll be nice and dark!

Re: I caved
I did 2 part rose flavor for a while. They loved the stuff.
I got a deal on complete formula pre-flavored mix and gave it a shot. The geckos didn't seem to care and loved it the same.

Re: I caved
Awww, thats a cutie... it won't be the last one you get either :P

Re: I caved
I know,
I have this nagging curiosity to see a really red pinstripe with huge crests and the only way I will have one is to buy the bits and breed my own.
Now all I need to do is understand basic care and morph genetics.

Re: I caved
morph genetics are basically non-proven from what ive been told. theres no 100% way to know what youll get. basically people get 2 geckos they really like and breed them and its a crap shoot as to what comes out. kinda confuses me, but oh well.
breeding is pretty easy, considering people on other forums are doing it on accident! a person put a male and female together for one night to see if they liked eachother(lol) and a few months later had some eggs. they mate once and produce 2 eggs at a time usually producing 18 a season.

Re: I caved
Genetics are somewhat unknown, but generally speaking you get one of four things when you breed cresteds:
1. offspring that look like dad
2. offspring that look like mom
3. offspring that look like a combination of mom and dad
4. the occasional offspring that look nothing like mom or dad (sometimes in these cases they look like the grandparents or great grandparents)
After you have been working with them for a little while you start to get an idea of what 2 geckos will likely produce. You can also learn what your specific animals tend to produce, and pair them accordingly.
While crested breeding is fairly easy, you still need to make sure your geckos are of proper age, weight and health prior to being bred. Cresteds also retain sperm, so they can continue to lay for anywhere from 3-8 or so months after the male and female are separated. How many eggs a female produces in one season depends on many things--there really isn't a normal set number. The number depends on how old she is, her weight and health, whether or not it is her first season and how long she is kept with the male.

My repashy has been dispatched so should be here fairly soon.
Can anyone tell me what colour of lights I should use to watch him at night? I was thinking of using a small blue 15w pygmy incandecent to also keep the night time temps up slightly.
And if I should fit a small tube for a day night cycle or if the room ambients will be enough?

Re: I caved
if you want to see him jumpin around a red or blue bulb will work fine without bothering him, i use a red bulb myself. mine thrive at room temp, which is around 75 in the reptile room. at night it goes to around 70, as long as they are under 83 or so they will be fine, and not much lower than 65.
i dont really use any lights for daytime, the light from the window seems to be enough, and the bearded dragons lights. during the day he will usually be really light, they dont fire up til its dark. if you want to see his true colors, you can take any dark container and cover him up for a few minutes, and when you pull it off he should be completely dark.
if you want a good website to read up on for them you can look at pangeareptile.com/forums.

Re: I caved
The only light that reptiles can't see is infrared light, so you would need to use a red infrared bulb for viewing at night if you don't want the gecko to be able to see the light (thus staying asleep, hidden or mostly inactive). Just be careful that the bulb doesn't heat up the cage too much, because infrared bulbs do emit heat--you want to keep it under 80 degrees in his enclosure. Usually ambient light is enough for a day/night cycle so you don't really need any other lighting.
Young babies may not seem to fire up too much if they are in their dull phase and haven't started to get their adult colors in yet. Some babies do fire up some, but some go through several months where they don't change much at all. A good way to get them to fire up is to mist heavily and then turn out the lights so that it is completely dark. Come back in 15 minutes or so and you should have a fully fired up gecko. The combination of humidity and darkness tends to do the trick almost every time.
