Re: just talked to my dad...
It's called respect for you elders. It isn't bad, it shows you have a respectful relationship with your parents. It only becomes bad if they control your actions beyond just giving advise. if you can kiss them on the cheek and tell them you love them and appreciate their input but this is something you really want, then proceed with said plan to acquire the animal...the respect is healthy. But if you organize your wants and desires to please them then there could be issues for you later.

Re: just talked to my dad...
im still gonna get my snake & if they know about it they wont step foot in this house, but you know what?
well that kinda sucks! but maybe we could have a visit in town or somethin'.
they like to go to restaraunts so maybe we could do that instead of their fearful butts coming in the house, lol.

Re: just talked to my dad...
Boy I understand how you feel! I am 34 and when I "mentioned" to my mom and dad I was bringing a snake home for a pet, my dad about hit the roof. Mind you, I am married and we have our own home so it's not like I was bringing it into HIS house.
This is the same man who put up with me bringing goodness knows how many different creatures home for pets as a kid. We've had a variety of dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits, and reptiles - including turtles, lizards, AND snakes! I guess it didn't help when my baby garter snake escaped for 3 days and my mom found him in the laundry room. We didn't tell my dad for 2 years.... :D:D:D

Re: just talked to my dad...
Now that my dad has handled my snakes a few times, he plans to get a couple of his own.
Of course, my mom only agreed to this if she can get a pool. :D

Re: just talked to my dad...
well my dad hates snakes to where he'll kill one, especially a rattler, if it get too close to the house. he's protecting my nieces, who are always over there. they're 8, 5 & 3. i grew up with that but fortunately i have a healthy enough respect to not kill them but i'd freak if i ever saw one near my house.

Re: just talked to my dad...
because of my dad's way of being around them im fearful of them but i know to stay away, not go & kill it.
-
Re: just talked to my dad...
he wont kill a kingsnake cuz he knows theyre good snakes but the rattlers....my dad takes no survivors.

Re: just talked to my dad...
i used to catch the lizards that got in, lol my mom shoutin' "get it! get it!" in the background, me running wild trying to catch it, lol, man those were fun times.

Are you the post police? Who cares?
My parents hate my snakes. I just don't talk to them about the slither kids. If they don't want to hear it, I will respect that and not mention them. Its none of their business anyway.

Re: just talked to my dad...
I guess I'm lucky because it was actually my mom's idea to get me my first snake when I was 10, and she had them when I was growing up. Now the only problem I have is showing her that I'm responsible enough to have another one.
But I feel for you! I don't know what I would ever do if I were in a situation like that with my parents - it's bad enough with my friends. All you can do is try to open their minds, but in the end, if they don't want to hear it then that's it. I think it's nice that you care what your parents think but ultimately you shouldn't let what they say (as an adult, obviously as a kid I have to haha) come between you and something you really want, as long as you know what you're doing.

Re: just talked to my dad...
My dad is terrified of snakes, but accepts that I have them. He will still come into my apartment, but makes a radius around the tank we have in the living room. We also have a secret... he knows how many snakes are in the apartment, and my mom thinks it's 1

Re: just talked to my dad...
My mom adores my snakes, maybe to much.
She baby talks them whenever they are out and fusses that I don't handle them enough.
She doesn't want me to ever own HOT's and even though thats not a plan in the immediate future it's something I'd someday like to do if I could ever find someone to train with. I always assure her I'd never do it without having the hots in there own Secure room and even then I'd make sure I had some training first.
But I have tons of co workers who just can't staaaand my snakes. I have to listen to stories about there stupid kids or dogs but I can't even have a picture out of my snakes without hearing some posturing like "Man if you ever brought one of those things around here I'd KIll it." Like I was gonna bring it to work.
Everyone has there own deal. I think 90% of the time snake fear can be cured with good doses of snake knowledge.

Re: just talked to my dad...
i wish they would just listen & hear me out, then i think i could change their mind but they're so dead onto the way they are that they're not willing to change it.
my dad said "can you hold a snake in your lap?" & i had a re-sounding "yes" for that, but i held my tongue for fear of fanning the flames (the arguement). it hurts that they wont come in the house but im stickin to my guns...i WILL have my snake gosh-darnit.

Re: just talked to my dad...
My parents have mostly gotten over the snakes now that they've met them. Ball pythons have that "creepy" snake look, I guess, but they are super sweet, and it's hard to argue that they're going to grow into 20-foot monsters after a few years. Only the hard-core phobics can really maintain their alarm when faced with a pretty-colored ball of sweetness and curiosity.
That said, my mother-in-law is one of those phobics. My husband lets me have the snakes, but on the condition that they ALL DISAPPEAR COMPLETELY whenever his parents visit. As in: they never existed, and were never here. So my poor ball pythons got to spend the last 7 days in the garage. (which actually has pretty good temps this time of year! I'd leave them out there if it weren't a security risk.)

Re: just talked to my dad...
my fiancee isnt crazy about the whole "getting a snake" decision since i didnt really throw it at him first, i just decided thats what i was gonna do.
his parents however are fine with my decision & i can see them somewhat interacting with the snake, once i finally get it, but my dad's, like, totally turned off to the mere idea & my mom'll be even worse (dreading her call). [shakes head & rolls eyes] whatever.
i've been on my own since i was 18 & i stopped trying to please them years ago. it was just too draining & i was stressed out all the time. i just dont have time for that kind of stress in my life. i got 2 kids, 1 being special needs, that require me to be stress-free...
wait a minute...
stress-free, with kids, lol, yeah right.
anyways, you get the idea, right?
