Gene types and whos got them.....
I have been reading up on genetics and breeding.. I am having trouble finding a good source of info on which BP's carry dominant and recesive genes (not sure if that makes sense to anyone else but it does to me lol) I know I saw a breakdown soemwhere but can not find it again.. If anyone can help me out that would be great.
Cheers

Dont forget co dominant and incomplete dominant :P
You know, I saw a big list of all of them not long ago too but I don't know where it was. I just have most of them memorized. Ive always thought BPnet should have a sticky of morphs that can be added to. Like the exotics vet sticky we have.

Cheers

What's an incomplete dominant morph?

Re: Gene types and whos got them.....
Incomplete dominant do not always do what we know dominant morphs to do..
Allele – A pair of genes at the same location on the DNA strand
Co-Dominant – A visible mutation appears when a single gene at an allele is different than normal. A matched pair of this gene brings about a “super” form that looks different than the single.
DNA -- Part of the genetic code that makes up all living things.
Dominant – A visible mutation appears when a single gene at an allele is different than normal. However, there is no known “super” form of the morph.
Heterozygous (Het) – A single mutated gene on an allele…this term is usually reserved for recessive traits that do not show up even though one gene is present.
Homozygous (Homo) – A matched pair of mutated genes at any given allele.
Recessive – A matched pair of mutated genes must be together at the same allele in order to bring about a visible change.
So incomplete is one that does not have a super form (as of yet) or it has a hidden gene in certain examples of the same morph which can produce a completely differently outcome. Woma for example. Woma A looks just like woma B but woma A has a hidden gene. The HG woma will produce totally different results when bred to the exact same snake that the regular woma was bred to.
There a few differences between dom and incomplete dom. Basically they are not entirely figured out yet. They produce the same percentage of them selves as any other dom but the results can vary. No super form or a super which dies before hatching or shortly after hatching.
Im not a genetics wizard so hopefully someone else can explain it beter lol
Re: Gene types and whos got them.....
well explained and well written sir...
cannot see anyone bettering that!
Re: Gene types and whos got them.....
Good stuff! Thank you for the info... now I got more reading to do..
Cheers

in the ball python world we use the incorrect term co-dominant, its really incomplete dominant. theres no such thing as co-dominance iirc
Re: Gene types and whos got them.....
somebody should make a "sticky" on this topic like name all the ball pythons and all there gene types. i would deffinatly put that to use =]:snake2:
Re: Gene types and whos got them.....
I'm pretty sure that Woma is a co-dom and it does have a super form. It's just that the super form is a fatal one.
The genetics that most ball python people know is not accurate. It's close and if you know any thing about genetics then its easy to understand, but its not totaly correct.
Re: Gene types and whos got them.....
yea woma is homozygous lethal, theres several other animals with traits like this, rabbits i know have a homozygous lethal gene i forget what it is tho lol
