Keeping Humidity Up Tips. . .

I have been trying to keep my humidity up but it always drops, most likely because I use a clamp lamp incandescent light as well as a UTH. How can I keep the humidity up while not having to sacrafice the lamp? When I turn the llmp off the humidity stays just fine so I know it's drying the cage out. What is a safe way to use a towel while keeping the lamp on and not burning the house down?

Also, I have to keep the lamp on the majoirty of the time because the cool side drops to 75 degrees F or below if I don't, so turnining it off isn't much of an option.

I'm assuming your using a tank with a screen top?
When I used mine, I had about 2/3 of the top covered with a thick dark towel and the heat lamp at the gap.
I also had the water bowl half on and half off the UTH so it evaporated and added to the humidity.
Whenever he was in shed, I added a lid with a hole to the top fo the water bowl and that boosted the humidity in there to help his shed.

Hi,

Have you insulated the bottom, back and sides of the tank?

If not that might make enough of a difference that you could abandon the lamp alltogether.

Sounds interesting. Explain?

You can take like foam board, and stick it to teh sides and the bottom of the tank to add insulation to keep the temps up.
What dr del is sayin is that by adding the insulation you might be able to eliminate the heat lamp, thus keep your humidity up

Inside or outside of cage?

On the outside of the tank, and it's a pain to keep on. I have double sided tape and still need to use clear packing tape to keep it in place.

Could experiment with your substrate....I've found the coconut stuff good for bumping the humidity. I just mix it with regular beech chippings

I put aquarium backing paper on first so that it looks nice from the inside then used good strong gaffa tape to hold the insulation on tight over it. :gj:

If the look doesn't matter to you then you could do what I did with the incubator and use silicon sealant to stick it directly to the glass - but it looks fugly I ain't gonna lie. :D

I would build 2 dimmer switches and put a uth on both sides of the tank, set one dimmer to keep the hot side 90... and the other side at about 80 ditch the light and cover the top with a towel..... building a dimmer switch is very easy if you want to go this route and need help pm me and i can help u build a dimmer switch set up that cost around 10 bucks usually less....

the way i have found out how to keep it in the tank is clutter it up with plants some moss it holds water and keep a towel over 6'' of it and i have also heard the tinfoil works realy good iv been wanting to try it just havent got any yet and a under tank heater is the key.:)

You could also try put your water dish over the UTH, you could also get a small damp cloth and place in one corner of the cage. :P

Also had a humidity problem, here is a quick fix. Get poster board and cut it to fit top of screen lid with proper cut outs for lamps and small cut outs at opposite end for ventilation. Cover with foil shinny side down and you will see humidity stay at 55-60%. You can also mist with water to keep things good. I have this on my 40 gal. tank.
