Ranco or Johnson ??

I have used the search feature, and found a poll that puts the Johnson, Ranco, Helix, and Herpstat up against eachother...but that's kind of a mixed poll because 2 are proportional and 2 aren't.

I am ordering either a Ranco or a Johnson tomorrow and don't know the difference, and more importantly would like to know which one people are finding more reliable and why...

If I remember correctly, the johnson has a light that indicates when is kicks on and off. I don't think the ranco has this.

Is this really the only difference? I mean they are the same price...the only thing I see different really is the size of the probe...the Ranco looks a bit skinnier..?

I am pretty sure that is the only real major difference. I only own the johnson though so I am not positive :)

I prefer Ranco, just preference. They're pretty identical.

BUT, the Johnson Controls can be rigged up for a night drop with the ND cable, which makes it attractive.

During breeding seasons, you would have to manually turn it down at night with the Ranco, where the JC would do it automatically with the cable.

I've got about an even number of Ranco's and Johnsons. I've never had a problem yet with one of the Johnsons, but I've had two Ranco's bite the dust before they were 5 years old.

As another option, I tested this thermostat last week. I think for a $30 thermostat, you can't go wrong. It has an auto high temp cutoff. Thermostat can't get any hotter than 108 degrees. Read the thread and see what you think!

I have Johnsons. Never had anything else, never plan on having anything else. I have had no reason to switch.

I personally use Johnsons (saved my life! It's like someone is there taking care of my snakes for me! Hurrah for no more temp issues!!), but I have heard great things about the Ranco.

Herpstat :P

I've used both. I don't see any difference other than the outer case. Currently I am using a Johnson to run the space heater in the snake room...
