House fire
Thursday night our house caught fire. Luckily someone driving by stopped and called 911 and came and banged on the door to let us know. The wife, myself and our daughter got out fine. We got the dogs out, and the reptiles are in a building out in the backyard so they were fine as well. I got out there with a hose and put the fire out on the outside but it had gotten into the attic as well. The firefighter did tell me that putting out the side of the house slowed the fire considerably though, and that we probably would have lost half to all of the house if not for that. That being said there is still some extensive damage and they're saying it could take 2 or 3 months before we can go back to living in the house. They're putting us up in a hotel until then. We just ask for everyones thoughts and prayers on speedy repairs of the house as my wife is due with our son in 6 weeks and ideally we would love to bring him home to his nursery and not a hotel but it looks unlikely. They said they'd try and put a rush on everything but it's still not very likely. If it's not one thing it's another I guess. We had just gotten the house finally how we wanted it too. All of the remodeling that was planned for this spring/summer was done. Oh well, just thought I'd let you all know. Hope everyone else is doing alright.

Re: House fire
Well, count me in on the thoughts and prayers! Thank God somebody dialed 911 and got you guys out! Hopefully you have the place equipped with smoke detectors too!
In all honesty, if you were near us we would help you out, housing-wise and getting things all sorted out with the house. Really. That's how we operate here.
If there is ANYTHING we can do to help please PM me. Think of us as all family here. Remember that. I'll be pissed if I find out we could have helped in some way and you hesitated to ask. I'll have to visit Charlotte then and come by and piss on your lawn! But seriously, please PM us if we can do anything. Clothes, baby stuff, etc. I can UPS them right out. No charge (of course!) You know what? PM us with an address anyways...let us know what you can use. How's that?
We don't have much, but we like to share some kindness when we can.
God bless.

I am sorry to hear of your loss. Do you need any help? Is there anything I can do from Maryland? Just ask and I'll do what I can.
God Bless!

Re: House fire
I'm SO grateful that everyone is safe and sound! But still, I can only imagine the amount of stress and difficulty you must be experiencing. You and your family are definitely in my prayers for peace and comfort, for financial stability, and for a fast repair of your home.

Re: House fire
Very sorry to hear all this :( I feel your pain. I have been through a house fire and been burned badly and we lost everything. I was the only human hurt. My wife was pregnant at the time with our youngest son also but she was not home at the time of the fire luckily. This happened to my family in 2005 and we are still putting the pieces back together. The doctor told my wife I basically had a 50/50 shot of living. I thank God every day for allowing me to live!!! I am glad to hear everyone is okay and you and your family will definitely be in my prayers!!!! Keep your head up!!!

Re: House fire
the good thing is that you all got out fine. it may take alittle longer then expected to get everything back in order, but it will eventually. good luck while in that hotel, things can get stuffy in those places

Re: House fire
Thank you everyone for all of the kind responses. I went by today and they had tore down what was left of the ceiling in the part of the house most effected down and had dehumidifiers and air movers in there trying to dry the house out from all of the water the firefighters pumped into the house. It's all a bit disheartening and after reading stuff online I'm worried about dealing with the insurance adjuster tomorrow. I'm curious, to anyone who has been through a house fire, did you have any trouble with the adjuster? I've read some stuff that said they had great adjusters who were really helpful, and some that said it was such a pain they had to hire a lawyer and a public adjuster. I really hope we get the nice one! I guess we'll see tomorrow.

Re: House fire
I think where the adjuster is concerned, it's all a matter of luck. Hopefully you have a good insurance company....and hopefully the person they send out is both compassionate AND competent.
I've never had a house-fire, but we had a flood once (plumbing induced flood...not an "act of God") and I was very comfortable working with our adjuster.
