Help.. Boa with mouth rot, ri and just plain sick?

This eve I went out to feed my ratties and found shoe box that was not suppose to be there. I peeked inside and was horrified to find a boa. I have no idea where he/she came from, but it is well known in the neighborhood that I like snakes. This poor boy is in trouble. He was laying on newspaper with about 1/2 inch of water under him and it was very slimy when I cleaned it out (I put on gloves and a mask when I cleaned out his cage.) I set up an emergency spot in the rat room for him where he is warm, dry and safe. He has a HUGE sore on his nose, and bubbles coming out the other nostrul. His mouth looks like it has white/yellow gunk covering his entire jaw. (I think it is mouth rot). I sent out my roommate to get what she could and she brought back some zoomed "repti wound-healing aid" I am not sure how contagious he is that is why he is still outside as of right now, but his temps are holding steady at 92 hot side 82 cold side. He has a bowl of water and is on white paper towels. He has a partial shed and is just in horrible shape. Here are some photos. What should I do with him? If it is mouth rot is it contagious?

This is the best photo I could get of him. He didn't even struggle much when I opened his mouth. It looked like his mouth was sealed shut, so I picked out a bit of the gunk so he could at least breath (it was like cottage cheese gunk).
I cant take him to a vet until tomorrow. Please help!

I would probably put him down. IMO Please don't hold this against me!
You could go to a vet to find that they say the same.
Some one did him wrongly for a long time.

That happened to me with a baby Savannah monitor one time, it died four hours after being at my home. Good luck with your little one there.

100% time for for this poor guy to visit a good vet!

If it were me (and you're not, so I understand), I'd keep it quarantined and get over to the vet ASAP. If there was any chance this guy/gal would pull through based upon what the vet says (attack the mouth rot, RI, etc) and dependant on my funds - I'd go for it. But I'm no vet, I don't know your financial situation and based on what you have posted, it doesn't sound too good.

The thing I hope over-all is that whoever owned him/her doesn't get another one. They took a perfectly healthy snake and slowly over time killed it in the name of ignorance.

Quarantine, then off to the vet in the am

Well I took this poor guy to the vet and yes he has mouth rot, scale rot and an RI. He is malnourished and dehydrated. I am going to give him a chance and see if I can save him. He is such a sweet boy. I hate what his last owner did to him. So send good vibs to this boy, he needs all the help he can get.

Poor buddy! Good luck with him! Was the vet fairly positive about his chances?

The vet said if he lives through the next couple of days he has about a 40% chance of making it. So the next week is going to be touch and go.

I just can't believe how ignorant people can be.

Makes me sick sometimes, and if I had the money I would totally take sick snakes into my care, treat them, and give them good homes.

This is just disgusting on how someone could let a snake get this way. I really hope that boa makes it.

If he isn't doing well and not responding well or at all to the medication, the best thing to do would be to euthanize him. But hopefully he'll pull through, this boa needs a good home with you and I'm most positive you'd give him the best home.

For a case like this I would quarantine him for a really long time even if he does get better. I'd shoot for 7 months to a year of quarantine, and make sure you do your best to take the precautions to not spread what he has.

Well tonight he seems better. A little more lively, but took his treatment well. He did NOT like his mouth having to be cleaned out, but all things considering he did wrap around my hand. He is also getting more hydrated as he had enough to poo/pee on me. LOL what I get for my efforts :) It looks like he has lost some teeth and his poor mouth... it must hurt like hadies. I am putting my money on him. I sure hope he pulls through!

Wow, what a horrible thing to do to a snake, even if they didn't know how to take care of them there is no ecuse for letting this happen. :(

I have to say you are a very good person... I'm not sure I'd have the heart to keep him, I would have most likely taken him to the vet to be put out of his pain. I hope he pulls through and everything turns around for the little guy. Seems like he found a good place to live if he does make it :D

Just coming back to with you some more good luck. Glad that he/ she is doing a little better.

I just hate it when people let snakes get that bad. I think snakes are one of the easiest pets to take care of. The hardest part about keeping snakes is getting your first enclosure set-up. There is just no excuse for letting animals get that bad, especially when there are plenty of people around that would take them. I'm sending good thoughts your way and hoping the little guy makes it...

Well, against all odds he is still alive. It is still a fight ahead of us but he just wont give up.

Oh that's so good! I hope he makes it. Its awful that someone would let him get that bad and just drop him off. He is a lucky boy that he ended up with you. I cant wait to see him 6 months from now. I bet we wont even know its the same snake.

I took this boy out and he is loosing his skin. The odd thing is it doesn't look like there is good skin under it. I am not sure how to explain it but it looks strange, not bright and shinny like a good shed looks like. Also the poor thing looks to have lost both front fangs :( I hope this won't hamper his eating.

On the bright side he is gotten a LOT stronger. He was noticeably stronger when he was coiling around my hand to protest his mouth cleaning.

The teeth will grow back. Boas and pythons lose teeth through their life. Some breeding males can even lose the spurs. They come back.

How is he doing now?
