Re: How can you tell
Another indicator are nipples. Only the females have them. Most of the time the males will kind of suck them in, so when that happens you can just look for nipples.

Re: How can you tell
As i noted years back, only sure way to know is to take them to the beach. If they are wearing a two piece then female... a one piece, then male.

I used the nipple test to sex the little ones. I can sex them pretty reliably at about 10 days with the nipple method.
If I am just holding back females for breeding I will cull all of the male babies as soon as they are old enough to sex. This allows the females to feed more heavily and gives them a good spurt in growth.
However, for mice or rats that are at least 4 weeks old...the nutsack should be pretty visible lol.

Re: How can you tell
lol yeah with mice and rats you just have to look for the balls. ONe of my breeding male mice has the biggest set I have ever seen on a rodent.... It's almost gross that its so big.
When they are younger, they still have balls just its harder to tell. You can tell easier by raising their tails up. The males balls will be way more visible if you raise the tail when they are younger.

Re: How can you tell
If you want to tell the sex of pinkies or fuzzies, but can't see any nuts yet to tell the difference....you can always do the "spacing" method. Hold the rat so that it's butt is facing you, belly to the floor. Gently grasp the base of the rat's tail and lift it a little bit. If there is a large gap between the anus and their pee pee, it is a male. If the gap is very small...female. This is how I sex all of my rodents when they are a week old, I run a rattery here. :)

Re: How can you tell
So one of my male BPs still not eating and I have a rat sitting on a 10g.
I'm trying to find out its gender but I'm really lost. It's a small rat. I dont see any testicles, or not yet? also the "pee pee" is very spaced out. Almost to its belly, that's what throwing me off...
When do rats develop their testicles? :weirdface
