my thermostat doesnt work?
i just hooked up my thermostat last night and it doesnt appear to be working. I set it to mid and left it on for an hour or two and the temp didnt change so i moved it down to low and its been at that setting for about 24 hours with no change in the temp at all. Its a repitemp 500r and im thinking its crap. This happened to e once before with a rheostat... is it possible that theres something wrong with my heat pads or does the thermostat just suck?
thanks
Re: my thermostat doesnt work?
You get what you pay for. Take a look at Herpstat or Helix thermostats, in the mean time run out and get a rheostat (dimmer) until you can get a quality thermostat.
Edit: Ah, one more thing. It may be your heat pad as well. Plug your thermostat into a lamp and see if it turns the lamp on. Either way, I would get a better thermostat.
Re: my thermostat doesnt work?
I had one of the same it kinda sucked, it never held a constant temp it always swing hi low. I don't know but I'd say that the fault lies in the 500r.
Re: my thermostat doesnt work?
do you have it setup properly? What kind of thermometers are you using to measure the temp of the UTH?
Re: my thermostat doesnt work?
hm that thermostat will be all i can afford for the time being. hope mine doesnt end up being crappy as i will only be able to afford to buy 1.
Re: my thermostat doesnt work?
Some of the basics you can re-check are:
1) Check the UTH over for any damage where the cord is connected.
2) Make sure it is plugged into the thermostat all the way.
3) You can also plug the UTH into the wall to make sure it is working.
4) If the thermostat is plugged into a power strip, make sure the switch is still turned on.
5) Verify that the wall outlet is still "live". Sometimes the circuit breakers can trip. Or you mave have a Master outlet that popped....

I have had one for a few years now and it works just fine. There might be a couple faulty ones, but you will get that with every product.
There is also this I happened across: http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-MTPR...1529683&sr=1-7
Re: my thermostat doesnt work?
Never owned one, but if it has a plug-in for the UTH, then you can test it with a lamp. Plug the lamp into the thermostat. Turn the temps up to the highest setting. This should light the bulb in the lamp. If it doesn't, then the thermostat is defective. If it does light the bulb, then you trouble is elsewhere.
Good Luck!

Re: my thermostat doesnt work?
i have a zoomed thermometer to check the temps... the UTHs are fully plugged in as is the thermostat itself. Its in a power strip and the power strip is working fine. Theres a green light on the thermostat that is supposed to cycle to let me know that its working and ive only seen green.
Re: my thermostat doesnt work?
best way to test it it too hook a light up to it and set it to come on and then dail it back to till shuts off it it don't then the think junked ( make sure the light worksfirst and it turned on lol) that how I test any thermostat I hook up ( wire up) first.
Re: my thermostat doesnt work?
is there an ideal website to buy these the herpstat from? And does anyone know if i can use it for 2 UTHs?

Yes you can run multiple heating pads off the herpstat but they will all be at the same temp unless you get the herpstat II
Re: my thermostat doesnt work?
I have two reptitemps and have been using them for a year with no problems! Plug your uth directly in the wall and see if they get hot! Also you need to turn the dial of the reptitemp to the left all the way and when your uth gets to the right temp, you turn the dial back slowly until the green light turns off! You also must have the probe directly on the uth so it can read proper temps!

I think the thermostat needs to be directly plugged into the wall outlet and not a power strip. I have been using several 500r's for years with no problems. I remember when I first got them I was going to plug the 500r into a power strip but read that it had to be plugged directly into a wall outlet.
When the green light is on it means the UTH is on. You need to turn the dial to a lower temp to make the green light go off and to turn off the UTH to keep it from getting too hot.
