My First BP! 09 male Lesser

Hi, just thought I'd introduce 'Lemon', my first ball python. I got him at the Ontario Reptile Expo this past Sunday. He's a late 09 Lesser. Snapped some pics before putting him in his tank to settle in. Thanks for looking!

Gonna try feeding him on the weekend, hope he eats... I'm so nervous after reading posts about BPs refusing meals! Anyway, here he is:

Very nice!!! Just leave him compltely alone till you try feeding him this weekend. He's nice and fat, so I wouldn't be too worried.

Thanks for the advice Stephanie! It's so hard leaving him alone :D I've seen him exploring everyday, usually around dusk, so I hope that's a good sign that he'll eat.

If he roams a lot it's not a good sign. Make sure his hide is nice and snug, that's usually the problem most new bp owners have. I use the small plastic pots for hides and solder a 'doorway' in them.

I know it's hard to leave them alone!!! But you can do it! Just look at these pictures any time you think about putting your hand in the tank/tub!

A bit of roaming is fine, as long as it's not for too long. If you have the husbandry correct then you're good to go until feeding day!:gj:

If you've bought her from a reputable breeder and it has eaten before I wouldnt worry to much. Just keep an eye on that husbandry.

Normally BPS from pet stores that have probs eating may have never eaten before and have been shipped accross the globe and are more of a problem. Some of those will eat straight away, some after alot of attemps will eat and some sadly will just die unless you force feed them. Pet stores dont GENERALLY keep the animals properly husbandry wise either so that doesnt help matters.

Im after a lesser or a pastave possibley if i can get one. So much easier for you USA folks. Not many big breeders that have a good selection here from what i can find. Not many females for sale either.

What a looker! I just got my first BP about two weeks ago and fed him the other day for the first time. It was nothing, but I guess I just got lucky with my guy. I think the most important thing is heating the rat up right. I let it sit in room temperature all day and tried feeding him and he was completely uninterested. As soon as I took the hair dryer to the thing he snatched it right up. Go with the dryer. Thats my tip :)

merdcme, haha I think I'm already addicted, I got a cornsnake last year, so this makes Lemon my 2nd snake :O

A.Vincze, did you find any animals to add to your collection? I like going to the Mississauga expo, even just to look around :) I'm from Markham, ON, pretty close. Lemon's roaming resembled what my cornsnake does when he's hungry... i hope the similar behaviour means the same thing.

Nicole, I remember someone beside me at the expo looking for a Lesser female! Maybe it was you lol!

Briana, Thanks for the tip, I usually dunk the thawed mouse in hot water before giving it to my cornsnake, maybe the hair dryer makes it yummier :D

Just one, I only went for rats and came home with more anyway.:oops: I plan to add to my collection this weekend. :gj:

As long as he only roams a little bit it's fine, if he keeps it up there might be something wrong with the enclosure. If you think he's hungry feed him and watch his behavior closely, they're not much for exploring even when hungry.

I agree with the hairdryer trick, works like a charm! My BP likes it when I make the rat's fur nice and fluffy :P Best of luck on your first feeding!

Hi,

The advantage of the hairdrier is it blasts mouse scented warm air all over the place as a side effect. :ninja:

Kind of a super concentrated burst of pre-scenting just before the hot juicy rodent hoves into the snakes view. :salute:
