Did you have a pet snake as a kid?

I got a Corn when I was 10. I've spread out from the Colubrids, I'm getting more into boas and pythons. That's where the real muscle comes in, I just love their muscles;)

I CANT EVEN TELL YOU HOW MANY GARTER SNAKES I CAUGHT AS A CHILD LOL. BUT I ALWAYS KEPT THEM IN A JAR WITH DIRT & GRASS. THEY ALWAYS DIED BECAUSE MY GRANDMA MADE ME KEEP THE JARS ON THE PORCH LOL. I WAS ONLY LIKE 5 OR 6 :snake:

They probably cooked from being exposed in that sunlight LOL, I guess most of us just don't know. I always caught small lizards and tried keeping them. Same thing happened. I accidentally left one in the sun so it could bask one time. Left the house and then came back to find a cooked baby lizzy:(

Im 23 now & my mom was just telling my girlfriend how i would cry like a baby when those snakes died. I just totally lost it when my iguana died lol

My first snake was an amel corn that I got when I was 8 years old. It stayed my only snake for years, died while I was at college, and I didn't get another snake until i graduated.

Had a few garters my dad cought in the yard. We would put them in a 10 gal aquarium with bedding and feed them goldfish. I knew nothing back then but my dad knew enough to get me started lol. We always kept them around until fall and then let them go.

I always wanted a snake but my mother isn't a snake person to put it nicely :D Now that I have my own place I'm starting to get into them :D

I don't really know how to answer this one. I was not allowed to own snakes (because they are "of the devil" you know ;0) or verimin (rats) until my father passed in when I was 15. So my first snake I brought home as a rescue when I was 16. I knew next to nothing and I didn't know where to look for good info all the info I could gather was from pet stores. The snake I named Anastasia and "she" was emaciated and dehydrated really bad. I called around and ended up soaking her for 20 min a day in shallow water and force feeding her mice. She died with in a few months. :tears: But it did the best I could.

I got another ball python after I moved out (Cecilia) and I had her for about a year before I moved into an apartment that wouldn't let me keep her so I gave "her" to a pet store. I got back into them as an adult in 06.

What I guess I'm trying to say is does 15 qualify as "when I was a kid?" I guess I will say yes.;)

my parents aren't really into reptiles, and my step mom is terrified of snakes. I got my first one in college.

my mom wouldnt have been caught dead in the same house as a snake lol she thinks theyre all evil just cuz the devil disguised himself as one in the bible...

I caught many in the creek behind my childhood house, but always released them the same day. I bought my first at around age 17 or 18.

I lived about a block away from a creek when I was a kid. I would catch one garter snake each spring starting when I was about 8. I would keep it all summer, and then let it go in the fall (because I wasn't bright enough to figure out how to feed it in the winter). I did this for about 2 or 3 summers.

I'm not sure how they even lived through the summer. I had them in a 10 gallon aquarium, I used grass clippings as bedding, no water, and no heat source. I fed them night crawlers, and even had a few successful sheds.

Then I discovered ball pythons when I was about 12 years old at the local ma and pa pet store. I begged my mom to let me get one, but she said no. She was fine with garters, but once she heard "python" it was out of the question. It was probably for the best, considering my husbandry skills for the garters.

I finally got my first ball about 12 years ago at the age of 25.

i voted no. My mom is afraid of snakes and was completely against snakes. But my son is 6 now and got a corn for his birthday from us. I feed and clean it right now. But we say it is his and he loves petting George.

Parents didn't really let me have pets. We had a family dog and that was about it. Something happened in me this year. I was about to turn 31 and I have always wanted a tarantula. My wife said she would leave me if I got one. I figured I had gone so long not getting one that I could go longer but I wanted something else.

The reason I wanted a tarantula was because it wouldn't care if I never payed it any attention other than feeding it. I didn't want to commit myself to something that needed someone to care about it. Sounds cold hearted, but I don't like dogs and I already have two cats which won't be replaced when they pass.

Thanks to a friend, I started looking into snakes. He said they would love me to never care to touch them, as long as I fed them, water, spot clean and monthly replace bedding.

Got my first snake and fell in love. By March, I had three and two leopard geckos and breeding my first colony of mealworms. Since march, I have started a superworm colony and got a bearded dragon yesterday (wife's idea).

It takes probably an hour out of my day to take care of everything, but I enjoy it and I have plans to get more. Need to build a rack first. Guess I'm making up for lost time.

BTW, I have not lived at my parents house since 1998. I don't want anyone to think I recently moved out at the age of 31 lol

I had a baby female burmese when I was 6 years old!!

I had frogs mostly, and fence lizards that I would ketch. I recieved my first snake, a female ball python, for my 14th birthday. So I geuss I was still a kid.

I had salamanders when I was a kid. Otherwise, no reptiles.

We caught all kinds of creatures when I was a kid, but never kept them as pets. Garter snakes, blow snakes, crawdads, salamanders, frogs, tadpoles, lizards, horny toads, scorpions, etc...

My dad is terrified of snakes. I didn't know that until I got my first ball python when I was 18. I felt terrible because I used to bring snake books home from school and the library and have him read them to me. They were like NatGeo books with real pictures. I had stuffed animal snakes and those plastic and rubber ones but no real ones.

My dad, terrified as he is, will still come into my apartment, and Charlie's enclosure is in the living room. We're making progress!

Nope, didn't get my first snake until last year! But I did have a pair of leopard geckos in high school, and my brother had a turtle... so our house wasn't reptile/amphibian free, LOL. ;)

My mom never would let me! One day my mom was screaming and called me! I went to the living room to see my Mom standing on the couch and asked if I had a snake in the house. I said no and she said yes you do because it just went across the floor and is under the chair! I grabbed it and took off outside! I think I got grounded for that one! LOL!

I'm currently 13 and have kept a ball python since i was 10 and it's still alive and healthy! About a year ago i got a corn snake still alive! And 2 months ago bought an under leopard gecko that weighed 37 grams when i got it and not is 48 grams. So I guess some kids can do things right.

No actually. I used to catch them, and then let them go. Same with frogs, lizards, toads, and anything else I could sneak up on or find under a rock.

Then as I was a young teen my cousin who rented out our basement kept a boa constrictor...and didn't feed it properly (I know this know, not then) and me and my mom would get very creeped out because it would follow our movements with it's head while flicking it's tongue.

Then I met my boyfriend who kept ball pythons, after a bit of nervously holding them I fell in love. It was when we had our first clutch that I took over keeping them though.:oops:

Was not allowed to have a snake in the house! Orders of the MOM! I had just about ever other pet a kid could have. Gerbils, Turtles, Green Iguana, Cayman, Fish, Hermit Crabs and Tarantulas. But no snakes!

Although my mom simply put up with them, my dad had an interest in reptiles, mostly in response to enjoying the pleasure they brought my sister and I. We had two spur thighs (one of which now lives with family friends and is HUGE), my Rosy boa, and my sister's Chameleon. The highlight of my year growing up was the annual reptile show in Tampa, and talking my dad into bringing home something new every year (to mom's dismay). This June will be my first trip back to the Tampa show in probably 10 years, so I'm pretty pumped, and may talk pops into coming with me to complete the experience.

had a gopher snake either in high scool or college. Came home from school and found it dead with with the mouse regurgatated hanging out of it's mouth. My mom said she wished it dead as she hated it. never got another until the ball I got 2 months ago.

I got a cornsnake when I was 8 or 9 and she did pretty good. I did all the research and took the advice of our herp shop :). I also kept tadpoles we caught from our pool when we cleaned it and raised them. When I was 11 I kept a white's tree frog, cute little sucker.

I gave my tree frog and my corn to the local herp shop when I was 13 because that was only way my parents would let me get a ball python. It was a tough decision but I don't regret it, I love Anubis soo much! He is now 5 or 6 years old by my best guess :D

A couple of years ago a lady at work asked if I wanted a snake. I said, "All my life!" It never occurred to me that I had moved out a while ago and could have one. I've had Dasia for two years now and I just got my second, Schrodinger, last month.:banana:

Well, I'm technically still a kid. But I did have a snow corn snake when I was 6 or 7. My friend let him out, though, unfortunately, and I never saw him again.

Well, when I was a kid, my Dad was totally into reptiles of any sort so our garage was a never ending rotating snake/reptile room. I just thought everyone did that so it never surprised me that at any given time we would have copperheads and garters, moccasins and king snakes...you name it, we had it. All were wild caught and only kept for a month or two and then released back where they were found. (Except the venomous if found near people-they got relocated).

Only got into boas and balls a few years ago when my husband called and asked if he could have a BP someone was giving away. Strangely enough, said "BP" turned out to be a female BCI (boa). Now as of just this moment in time, we have 2 BPs, 5 boas and 1 corn, subject to change at a moments notice though.

My mom is terrified of snakes so I didn't get my first pet snake until I was an adult and no longer under her roof. ;)

Nope My Mother would never let me , so now when my fiance says "Your Getting Another one " I tell her to blame MOM lol I was always told they would get out and eat my brothers lol yeah weirdo

when i was i kid i was actually petrified of snakes, when i was 19 i decided having fears was stupid and here i am today, two snakes later..

I kept lots of snakes as pets when I was growing up. The eastern hognose is my favorite. Speckled king snakes are a close second favorite. The only water snakes that would tame down for me were northern water snakes.

I didn't buy a snake until I was 28. Female Albino BP named Sheila. She is still my favorite ball python.

my aunt raised garter snakes and i had two from her. I was young and stupid and didnt know how to take care of them. I also had a ball python when i was around 13. got him from a "pet swap" which mainly was a bunch of low class white trash people with a ton of animals they didnt know how to take care of.. well got him and had him in a 10 gallon tank with a heat rock *bangs head on desk* but alas.. that was before internet and i had no idea how to take care of him. Sold him to someone else because i kept falling in love with the mice...

I had some small garter snakes, and a green grass snake, as a kid (before I was 12.) I would bring them home from our cabin, and keep them in tanks, feeding them earthworms and such. One of my garters turned out to have babies all over the tank! I let them go out where she came from.

nope. My parents weren't interested in having them in the house. The second I moved to university I got my first one and it didn't take long for my parents to warm up to them. They don't want me to get anymore, so I have to wait until I get out and into my own place, but they're perfeclty cool with the ones I have.

yes since i was about 10 years old i have been keeping everything from garter snakes to burms. now i currently only have bps.

NOOB here...I've had a few pets as a kid, I was 7-8 when my Dad bought me my 1st snake, it was a RTB. I've owned a few others since then, I've had Iguanas, one of which I found swimming in a Lake!!!! Along with many other pets including Dogs, cats, birds, and fish/turtles. I recently rehomed an 08 RTB, BP, and Chocolate KS, against my will ofcourse.

I plan on getting a few BPs for a first time breeding project with-in the next year or two. I'm amazed with the BPs genetics, and the number of different morph possabilities...lol...I was interested in breeding RTBs but BPs caught my attention with the many different possible outcomes. I love all snakes, BUT BPs, top the list.

I've been lurking around this site for awhile now, and I have to say this is the most informative and seemingly friendly BP site I have come across. I plan on being around and asking Quite a few questions.

Wow, I'm surprised at how close the poll results are.

For my part, I was never allowed to have a snake. Of course, when I was a kid, I never had interest in anything but boa constrictors. That probably had something to do with it.

As a boy, I had numerous garter snakes and ribbon snakes,a smaller number of blue racers and smooth green snakes and a couple of hognose.
I would keep them in a terrarium and release them before winter came.
