Securing temp probe to inside of glass
First of all, I'm using a 20G tank. I received my Herpstat just the other day. I have the therm probe taped directly to the UTH in the center via foil tape. Inside the tank, I have a digital temp probe that is presently taped directly to the glass via foil tape, centered over the UTH within the warm hide, and then covered by ~ 1/2" of coconut fiber substrate. I've set the Herpstat to 93 and the inside temp probe is reading 92.5. My concern is the tape on the inside. Although it's sealed very well to the glass and I can't imagine the BP ever getting caught up in it, I've read many of posts that suggests AGAINST using tape inside of the tank. Would you recommend that I remove the tape and if so, what would be the best way to secure the probe to the glass? I'd prefer to leave it as is but I don't want to jeopardize the safety of the snake. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance. You guys have helped me a ton already. - Bill

Re: Securing temp probe to inside of glass
I'd just lay it over the glass under the substrate and if it gets moved move it back in place, no harm no foul.
No tape inside a tub or tank for me.
This is why I love my temp gun so much, no probes to fuss with :P

I do the same thing. Lay it on the glass, under the substrate. It makes it easier to remove and clean if it gets poo or urine on it...

Re: Securing temp probe to inside of glass
Thanks for the quick responses. My only issue with just laying it on the glass not secured is that if the snake moves the probe to a cooler location, which I'd imagine he will, the Herpstat will open up the flood gates so to speak and drive the temperature up to a point where it could potentially burn the snake. I'd feel much more comfortable with securing the probe directly to the glass, as this way I'd know precisely at all times what the snake may be exposed to if he was to burrown down against the glass. This setup is for my 16-year old daughter so I'm trying to make it as fool-proof as possible. She'll be doing all the regular maintenance but I don't want her to have to worry about checking/adjusting the probe on a regular basis. Thanks again for the quick responses. This is always appreciated.

Re: Securing temp probe to inside of glass
Hmm if your taking about the sensor for your tstat that should be outside the tub on ur uth or flexwatt.
The temp probe on a thermometer should be on the inside

Re: Securing temp probe to inside of glass
You can hot glue the thermometer probe to the glass inside the tank.
The thermostat probe should be taped to the OUTSIDE of the UTH. The snake cannot move it there.

Re: Securing temp probe to inside of glass
eventhough the tape is secure to the glass it has edges and foil tape is very sharp I think you should not use it

Re: Securing temp probe to inside of glass
You can foil tape it to the uth outside the tank and use a temp gun to find out what you have to set your herpstat to get your temps right. Good luck but no tape

Re: Securing temp probe to inside of glass
@f4n70m: Yes, my thermostat probe is taped directly to the UTH outside the tank, and the temp probe is taped over the UTH directly to the glass inside the tank. Thanks.
@Kaorte: Thanks. I was wondering about using a hot glue gun inside the tank for the temp probe. I don't have any experience with a hot glue gun so I'd have to research this a bit. Knowing me I'd screw it up somehow so I'd want to test it out first. :)
@SAR17: Great point. I hadn't thought of that. I was just thinking about the tape getting stuck to the snake. Thanks for pointing that out.

Hot glue guns are pretty easy. You can pick up a mini glue gun from a craft store for about $5. Basically just plug it in. let it heat up, put a glob of glue down on the glass and stick the probe in quickly before it dries.

Re: Securing temp probe to inside of glass
The Herpstat probe should be on the outside of the tank, between the UTH and tank. The thermometer probe that only tells you temperature should be on the inside of the tank, under the substrate, above the UTH...
I have tubs set up, but it is still the same for tanks. Is this how you have it currently?
1) The Thermostat (Herpstat)probe should be mounted something like this to the bottom of the enclosure...

2) Then the UTH is mounted to the bottom...

3) The thermometer probe is buried in the substrate on the right hand side and does not affect whether or not the Herpstat is running. I only tells you what the current floor temp is above the UTH on the inside of the enclosure...

Re: Securing temp probe to inside of glass
I see everybody else posted while I was playing in the Gallery... :D Yes, a glue gun will work also...

The thermometer probe has nothing to do with your t-stat temps changing so no biggie if it moves.

Re: Securing temp probe to inside of glass
Does the glue gun need to make direct contact with the glass to heat it up first, or can you just melt the glue from above, letting it drip down on the glass, and then just press the probe immediately into the glue? I really like this suggestion. Thanks.

Yep duh, you are correct. :) Note to self: Do not mix booze with BP posting. :D

yes you can just pull the trigger and let it drip onto the glass. I would just put the glue gun right on the glass and put one big blob in one spot so you don't make a huge mess. Once you have your blob, stick the probe right in there.

Re: Securing temp probe to inside of glass
I use little tabs of velcro. I found them at Walmart. They have adhesive on one side but I see no way they could come loose and pose a threat. On second thought go with the hot glue.

Re: Securing temp probe to inside of glass
i use the velcro to put the acurite box on the side of the tub and hotglue gun to put the probe to the bottom of the tub.

Re: Securing temp probe to inside of glass
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I think I'm going to try the glue gun approach. First feeding is scheduled for tomorrow evening so I probably won't mess with his cage until sometime after. If my daughter happens to take him out this evening, I'll at least rip the tape off.
