best time of day to handle
mornings, afternoons or evenings?

Re: best time of day to handle
For ball pythons later at night is better as they are nocturnal snakes.

Re: best time of day to handle
Dusk onwards, although I pick mine up all times of the day if they need to be cleaned out. They dont seem to get stressed out or anything.

Re: best time of day to handle
I pick mine up whenever I want to.
That being said, I don't over handle my animals. The most they are out is one to two times per week for about 10-15 minutes.

Re: best time of day to handle
I take mine out sometimes during the day and sometimes during the evening. I don't think being taken out during the day would stress most BPs out enough to make them stop eating.
However if I do add a snake that is refusing food often I try to minimize taking them out until they start eating on a normal schedule.

Their cage must be pretty dirty then.
I take mine out whenever I want or need to. Most of the time it's during the day, but if their cage is dirty it gets cleaned whenever I see it. And that I take them out for.

Re: best time of day to handle
Taking them out a couple of times a week is okay. Seems like the longer you've done this, the less stressful they become.

Re: best time of day to handle
i take my BPs out when i clean. i just quickly look over their bodies to make sure they didnt get into their poopie -_-... it only happened once to my spider, and a nice warm bath fixed it up =]. anytime i check them out, i check their bellies, their faces / heads, and vents to make sure nothings out of the ordinary :salute:

What happens if you over handle your BP? Does it stress it out or is there something else to worry about?

Re: best time of day to handle
I usually take mine out when he is active (nights) I will open his in closure and wait to see if he will come to me. He usually does once or twice a week. That isn't including cleaning his enclosure that I do on a schedule for a full clean and I always spot check every day but i usually work around him.

because the handling is for you, not for the snake. If your snake is not eating and you are holding it for hours a day, then that is probably why it isn't eating.
They don't "like" being held. They just tolerate it. If it were up to them, they wouldn't want to be handled at all.

As do I:)
The only times I take my snakes out is when I spot clean, change the bedding, sometimes when I change the dish, and when I give them their health check.
The health check is to see if they have any parasites or sicknesses. I will normally open their mouths up to check around for mucus bubbles or I will pull their lip down on both sides to check that way if they are head shy. I will also listen for any popping/clicking noises. Just to make sure my snakes are all healthy.:gj:
The other times I take my snakes out is to show people if they wanted to see them or if I'm taking my male out or putting him in for breeding. I'll also take my female out to palpate her. So far nothing:mad:

Cleaning time only. If I want to pet something I call for one of the dogs.

They also don't have jobs or have to go to school. They have all the time in the world to sleep!

Re: best time of day to handle
Yes I would say evenings as well since they are nocturnal. I handle my snakes usually 1 or 2 times every day.

Re: best time of day to handle
Usually take them out at night. When i had a ton of enclosures it seemed like they slept all day and came out at night so i ususlly let them sleep unlessthere was a need. Their definitely more nocturnal.

Re: best time of day to handle
Thanks agent! I have had mine less than 2 weeks. She was a gift to me along with a 40 gal tank(which i have 3 hide spots, bowl of wet moss, water dish and a really cool branch. I took her into the shop today where it was purchased, and the owner told me that she is in excellent health and very happy and friendly. I am a first time snake owner and want to handle her allthe time. She was so friendly at the shop, even a customer who was with her bf and didnt care for snakes actually wanted to hold her! I feel like a proud parent.....lol. Thanks for your input!

Little punks dont have to hear the annoying sound of obnoxious alarm clocks at 6 in the morning.. Jealous is an understatement haha..
Even so, I hate waking mine up during the day. Its not his fault he "lucked" out more then me. With his being a snake and me being a damn human with responsibilities lmao..
:snake: >
The banana represents me haha
