thermometer/humidity gauges

will the t-rex thermometer/humidity gauge duo pack from petsmart be sufficient enough for a ball python terrarium or will i have to have something digital?
i know that almost everything nowadays is run digital but does it really matter? is digital always better?
im just curious to see what ya'll think.
can i go simple here or do i need expensive?
im planning on a temp gun so i can check temps frequently & a thermostat so can control the temperature output, but when it comes to monitoring the temps & humidity whats the deal-eo?

ok i got my answers lol i posted this then called the breeder...he said the round dial-ish ones are not accurate enough & that i'd need something digital, which is fine.

its at lowes for $19.57, couldnt find it at walmart or homedepot (i look up their websites first). i saw a flukers digital thermometer/hygrometer at petsmart...will that work?

You wont find it on walmart website its not listed but its in stores i did same thing.

And the flukers WILL work but its like $20 and has no probe so why buy it?

If the acu rite is at home depot for $20 it comes with temp on the box, the prob, and humidity where the flukers cost $20-$25 and only has the temp of the box and humidity but no probe

Seems like a big waste of money to me

Check walmart (in store) ask where their therm/hygro meters are and i bet its there :)

There is also a little white one that walmart sells but it doesnt have a probe. I picked up a few of these to put in the tubs that had no probe in them. I generally have 3 or 4 acurites reading temps at different levels in my racks but I got these anyway. The only problem I have ever found with any of the digital ones is in very humid conditions. I had one in a egg box and it stopped working after about a week of being exposed to 100% humidity. The crystal just went bad and you couldnt see anything. You shouldnt have to worry about this happening if you use them in regular tubs or tanks though.

Home depot carries the accurite for about $12. I have seen it at all of the stores I have been to (around 5-6 all in different areas). Go to the garden section and have someone point you toward the indoor outdoor thermometers.

These units are not listed on any of the three retailers websites. :/

Do you have a link? You might be looking aT another unit. The prices at lowes are comparable to home depot. $8 more sounds excessive unless the particular unit you are looking aT is more complex or different in some way

The flukers is fine for ambient temps and humidity, but you still need a digital thermometer with a probe to measure the temp of the uth.

The thermostat probe just controls the uth. If you go with a simpler unit then it won't even display temperature. The nicer models let you choose a temp as a set point but that is the temp of the heat element, not the temp the snake experiences.

You need to take three measurements in the enclosure. Cool side ambient temp, hot side temp and ambient humidity. The flukers covers the ambient but you will need a thermometer with a probe to measure the temp right on the glass under the substrate where the uth is. You want to measure the hottest spot the snake can get to. The accuriyte has all three of these in one unit for $12. The flukers only meaures ambient temp and ambient humidity and costs $20. You will then need a probe thermometer which costs $10-$15 from the petstore. The accurite is more bang for your buck.

I read in another post where you were getting a temp gun from PE. This will be your life line as far as temps, the accurate temp where and when you want it, on top of substrate, under substrate, cool side, warm side, even ambient temps. The accurite is still a good idea and you definately need a digital humidity read out but put your bottom dollar on your temp gun as far as temps go.

Does anyone know if there is a device with a seperate sensor that will control a mister/fogger? I saw the herpstat humidity but am not sure if you have to put the entire unit inside the cage or it has a seperate sensor for humidity. For the price (around$200)that it is going for it should have 2 sensors.

You don't really need something like that for a ball python. Those are more for amphibians and reptiles that require very high humidity.

Thanks, I guess unless I want to spend $250 to automate humidity I guess I will just have to stick to misting on my own. My house is really dry especially in the winter. I used moss and manually misted for the last 2 sheds I've had my girl for. Both sheds went real. without misting inside as well as outside is aboout 30-35%. Any suggestions on how to increase. Already did the foil & it helps but without moss which is kinda messy it drops really fast. Only use green carpet as bedding for now.

Switching to a tub will greatly increase your humidity :)

Here it is. In Wal-Mart, it is usually in the home/hardware section. At Lowes it is usually in the outdoor section...
