Boa at Petco, considering it...
Well, all the petstores besides mine are not going to be selling boa constrictors anymore. Which sucks. The past few months I have been going to our local Petco, and they have a colombian boa I believe to be het for something. He almost looks like a pastel, already over 3ft at least and a bit expensive of course I am honestly considering purchasing him.
Supprisingly, he's in the best condition of any of the snakes there and I want him quite badly lol. The manager says they just want to get rid of him, but still want 164 for him.
Should I do it? ^_^

Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
if he looks legit why not!! go for it!!!!!
let us know what you choose!
-
Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
I always say if you want it get it.
-
Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
He looks pretty legit to me, my ex has been looking at him too and there is not a snow balls chance in... *ehem* that i'd let him take it! :D Should have money tomorrow, if he is still there that handsome lil boy is MINE!

Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
If you like the snake, then why not?:D Even if its a normal, it may be really attractive to you, and that all that matters. And at 3ft he is already well started, but still check for signs of bad health.

If he looks to be in good health, go for it:D

Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
It's hard to not buy something like that if you really want it. With a boa, I would personally look at buying from a reputable breeder. With Petco I would say to check out all of the other herps there. I've seen mites more times than I can count at those stores, but your Petco could be a good one. That's a bit pricey. If they really want to move it and you decide to go for it maybe you can bring in some KS ads to show them what they're actually selling for. I don't think they will normally deal like that, but if they really feel the need to free up the space then it's worth a shot.

If he's a normal colombian, then that's just awesome. He's absolutely beautiful. I've had my eye on him for awhile, I've taken him out and seen no sign of mites or anything wrong just yet.

I know what you mean, i'd much rather buy a boa from a well known breeder at a show or online. This petco hasn't been to bad compared to quite a few I've been into, they actually take care of their snakes pretty well. I will definatly look him over well when I go back in, and take in some information to convince them to lower the price. If they are that desperate to get rid of him then they'll probably drop the price.

Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
If you gonna pay that much for it you might as well get one from ms lynn at boas and balls str8 up. Then you can know what you getting your snake will be 75 bucks and shipping will be 40 or 50 bucks you do math just my:2cent:.
-
Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
IMO thats a bit to much to pay, the boa market has dropped and you should try and make a deal with them haha
I wonder what petco pays for young boas, I bet the markup is intense.

No, I don't plan on paying that much for it! LOL I will argue and get it marked down a lot. I normally would never buy any reptile from a petsmart, petco, petland etc etc. But I want to get him out of there, and he doesn't look half bad. Otherwise I'd definatly purchase my snake from someone I know has high quality animals.

They probably only paid like 30 bucks for it, honestly, either that or it was brought in by another customer who didn't want it. Usually how it works at pet stores.

Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
If it's the petco I'm thinking of and the boa I'm thinking of, totally go for it. He's gorgeous, and looks healthy for a petco. But petstore animals need homes too! :D
-
Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
I agree with Walt,
And I must say you never know really what's wrong until the snake is brought home.
That's normally how it works for me LOL, my second BP had mites and I never noticed until I handled him one day. A little JurassiMite fixed it up in about a week.
But if you really do want him, check for every sign possible LOL. You can check for RIs without opening the mouth too, like pulling down the bottom lip on the side of the mouth and checking for any mucus bubbles. If it's all clear your good with that (don't forget to check both sides!) but still listen up for popping/clicking. If the snake is whistling it could be stuck shed/about to go in shed, but still keep a close eye.
Mites like the head area, so check under scales on the head and neck. I normally spot them underneath the snake like on the jaw/neck area.

Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
Hey, just to be on the safe side why not fly CoolioTiffany and I out of Phoenix and we can thoroughly scope him out for ya! We don't eat much and are toilet trained and everything!
On a serious note, particularly if the manager 'just wants to get rid of him' then the price should drop quite a bit. We got Mr. Biggles from a local pet store whom I'm sure somebody gave up and we adopted him up at the reptile show here in Tucson where the store had a display. We got him for $50. and at the time he was about 5 1/2 feet long. He's now pushing towards 8' in just 2 years. Eats like a horse. I have the bills from buying jumbo rats to prove it too! Ugh. There goes the budget...

Which petco are you thinking of? Because I have never seen a boa as nice as that in a petco, like ever! LOL.

He will be getting a full body look over from me once I get in there, trust me, I won't just walk in there and take him. I don't need my babies at home catching something, haha.

Hahaha. I work at a petstore, but a family owned place that is a lot different than all those franchises. I am sure they will go down on his price, they know i've been checking in on him weekly !

I will remind you that she said that her ex is looking at him. So basically she's forced to buy him because you never let the ex end up with something you want.

Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
What area are you in?
I may have seen this Petco and boa before.
-
Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
Seems a bit expensive, but I say that if you look him over and he looks and acts healthy, you should just go for it. If you are almost sure you are going to get it, then just go and get it, and DONT let your ex get it before you!

Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
Cant wait for pictures LOL.:D

Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
Personally, I would go with a reputable breeder, but if you feel comfortable buying from Petco, go for it.
-
Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
If you're not purchasing anything else with the boa, then they probably won't budge on the price unless they really do have to move it (know from experience).
The price is too high for a normal, but it's already established so chances are it will eat and make a good pet.

No matter how good you are with snakes, you can't just tell by looking at it. Hets are gene carriers.

Yeah, expecially when he is just plain idiotic and doesn't take care of his animals correctly. I got him into snakes, and he just rushed into everything because he was mad that his girlfriend had more than him :weirdface

Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
If you love it, then go for it. Its your money. My local Petco sells them for 190. I wouldn't pay that much. I paid 50 for a boa last year at the San Diego show. I did purchase a Pastel BP, yes a Pastel BP, from Petco for 80.00. That was a steal. He had some mites but that's about it. He's a great snake and growing. I got lucky. Good luck.

Yeah, I paid 60 for a colombian red tail at the tinley show and he was drop dead gorgeous. You can get them so much cheaper else where, but this one has just gotten my attention. I stopped to look at him agian last night before work, trying to get up the money to go get him.

I beg to differ... :D

Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
All I can say, is that it is not your normal colombian boa or whatever they are selling it to be. They are giving me the boa for 100, I put a down payment on it last night.

Re: Boa at Petco, considering it...
Well congratulations on your new Boa! I'm exited too, I'm getting my 2 Boas sometime after a month... :D

How can you say that? Isn't that how all or at least most snake morphs today have been found?

Yes, pics please!
Also to comment on the few that think they can identify "het"...
How can you say I am not right? Genetics is genetics and I may not know snake genetics that well, but I do know plant genetics which at least gives me a basic understanding of genetics. Being heterozygous is being a carrier. You can't see it, I don't know how else to explain it...
