Life span of common pet snakes

Often we don’t appreciate how long a snake can live when housed in ideal conditions. The pet shops and breeders rarely ever tell us just how much of commitment it really is to care for a snake over the full course of its life. Fact is that snakes (as well as other reptiles) can live long, long lives especially when you compare it to that of other common household pets like cats, dogs, and ferrets.

This is not a full listing by any means it is simply designed to give the new potential snake owner some idea of how long these animals can be part of our lives if properly taken care of. Consider that snakes never stop growing for their entire lives though it does slow down as they get older. For however long it lives and is part of your home you will need to feed that snake.

Corn Snake life span
Corn snakes have a life span of 15 to 20 years while in captivity. Sometimes they can live longer but that is the average length of their lives.

Ball Pythons life span
Ball pythons have a life span of 20 to 30 years. While that is the “average” there are many people who find their beloved pet to get much older. The oldest on record lived to the ripe old age of 48. That’s just shy of half a century!

Boa Constrictor life span
Boas have a life span of 25 to 30 years on average, but like all other snakes it isn’t unheard of for them to live longer.

Burmese Python life span
The Burmese has a potential life span of 25+ years of age, but in captivity the average lifespan is closer to 10 years. The biggest reason for this is that people are simply not prepared to take care of an animal of this size. Given the right environment and conditions a Burmese will be sharing your life for a long time.

Reticulated Python life span
Reticulated pythons are like Burmese in both their life span (25+ years) and in their massive size. Again if Retic’s had the proper housing and care it could easily live to be 25 years old, but most people simply aren’t prepared for this kind of a snake.

Carpet Python life span
Carpet pythons have a life span of 20 to 30 years of age. There are several sub-species of Carpets (Coastal, Jungle, and others) but they all live to be about the same age

Kingsnake life span
The average life span for a kingsnake is 15 to 25 years.

You don't know commentment until you own a large parrot or a large tortoise. My parrot is in my will. She will live another 60 years or more. A friend has a tortoise (Sulcata) that was another friend's grandfather's pet. He was a curator for some zoo and received the tort as a gift by the zoo staff when he became curator. It was said to be a joke, but he kept it until his death, then the family shuffled it around until JP took it from the family some 10-12 years ago.

I really don't think you're going to get very many responses with this poll either. You have a handful of breeder hear that have 20 + years of experience. You may get 1-5 answers to your question. Most here haven't been into snakes for that long.

I think this subject has been brought up before.

Well, my Dad gave me his first and only ball python when he was diagnosed with emphazema and she was about 15- 17 then, and I had her for about 5 years after that before she passed away, so I'm going to esimate that she was between 20- 22 years old when she passed away. Now I have a rescued hatchling normal female that is probably around 2-3 months old now.

I don't know if you meant it that way....But if you did I'm the oldest serpent here at 51.

One snake is like a year old the other one 3 weeks.

I expect both to die soon due to housing them in plastic tubs

:slamhead: You just really need to stop posting. Every time you make a new thread, I can't help but notice they are all posts that seem to be targeting those that house their ball pythons in plastic bins. You want to somehow prove that snakes kept in rack systems or tubs die younger or are less healthy, and those that do house them this way are horrible snakey parents that need to have their snakes taken away. You are making yourself a lot of enemies here. I don't like being able to say I don't like someone on this forum. Even those I have debated with on occasion I still respect and I value their opinion or advice. You, however, are another story. Now, stop posting threads like this that make breeders out to be bad people and play nice.

But to answer your question my oldest female is 5 years old.

When I was 14 my mom worked down at the local pet store, around that time some one drop a ball python off in a sack on the front step early in the morning. A week later the guy came in and admitted that it was him and that she was two years old. For the next 5 or so years she was the pride and joy of the store. After Lisa sold the store to another owner the trend just didn't seem to stop. Owner after owner and the store just got worse And worse. It was hard to see our beloved snake mistreated again and again. Finally the recent owner gave her up and my husband and I are the proud owners of a very large very loving ball python "Grace" she is 14 years old as I am now 26. You can't imagine the relief it was to walk out of that store with the first ball python I had ever seen and loved. Grace is doing great! She is eating well sheding well(finally) and set up in a grand retirement encloser. With every thing that snake has been through i'm sure she will live at least another 10 + years. Three cheers for Gracie !!!!!

My oldest has been with me for 10 years. I adopted her, when she was about 2. The previous owner was not 100% sure of her age, so she may be even older than 12. My second oldest is about 8.

Jay kindly read this and pay attention. I want to know how old everyones snakes are....The plastic reference was removed from this poll. As said before I always discounted breeders from the debates on plastic, cause there is no viable option for them.

My JCPs are 13~14 years, 11 years, and 11 years.
My BPs range from 8 months up to 9 years.
My Corns range from 6 months up to 12 years.

My oldest snake is a female ball python I got for my 14th B-Day, I am now 20, so that makes her a little over 6 yrs old, I think she was a bout 4 months when I got her. She is my pride and joy, and I look forward to many more years with her.

Oldest snake here is my 5-year-old BP.
