Petland.. Ive finally succomed..
...to the "lets rant & rave about sucky stores" club...
So today I went into petland to just look around. I had one of my cattle dogs with me and took him in. They actually had an ACD puppy there so I spent most of my time playing with him and my own ACD. (my dogs are up to date on shots) I go look at the reptiles and of course none look as good as they could. The snakes all looked dry with stuck shed. The lizards all looked too thin with empty bellies. A girl I know has worked there for years begins telling me about her beardie. How she has only ever fed it meal worms and romain lettuce.. Oh wow.. I had to look away so she wouldnt see my expression. Then she starts telling me how that baby savannah right there was the sweetest thing until they started feeding it meat. Thats when it got mean. Therefore you should never feed your savannah meat to prevent them from getting mean. IE, ground beef, rodents, etc. Anything other than insects.. Oh wow... This is the only word that kept popping into my head.
Thats all. I just had to jump on the wagon and tell of my experience with dum..I mean uneducated people.

Well this isn't a Petland rant, but a pet store that I go to just needs to fire one of the ladies that works there. Every time I go into that store she is there and she tries so hard to act like she knows about the animals when she clearly does not.
I was in the reptile room looking at some sand boas as a guy that had just been in the room said to one of his buddies that the boa had its mouth open. So I go in and look at this little boa. It's mouth was wide open and it was squirming in a way that made me think it was uncomfortable or in pain. I called the lady into the room and pointed out the snake who had then closed its mouth. She said "You know I think that was the one that laid eggs recently." I told her that the mouth being open was most likely a sign of illness and then I just got my feeders and left. I really didn't want to stand there in front of a whole bunch of people and embarrass her, but I do plan on talking with the store's manager about her.

Yea, she is a little dumb when it comes to animals. Of course, I will be watching this store very closely now. If it gets any worse, I will probably take my business elsewhere. It is usually a good store (reptiles have fresh bedding and water and heat) but sometimes people there give horrible advice and don't know a lot about their animals. Here are a few...
1. I asked a girl there about whether the puppies they sold came spayed or neutered and she said "Oh no. You don't spay a female dog until she goes through her first heat and males shouldn't be neutered until they are 6 months old." ----I am pretty sure you can get they fixed A LOT sooner than that! 3-4 months old is a good age.
2. A guy who has apparently been breeding rats for a long time recommended a brand of cat food to my sister who wanted to begin breeding for feeders. It was 50% protein!!!!! He also told her the rat she was purchasing was half dumbo and you could tell because of the ears and how soft the fur was.
3. The lady telling me a kenyan sand boa laid eggs.....
4. There was a baby ferret in there this week who was WAY TOO YOUNG to be up for sale in a store. I'm guessing he was around 5-6 weeks old, skinny, lethargic, and sick! Poor little guy. That was the first time I have EVER seen a ferret in such bad shape there. I'm thinking of stopping by tomorrow after work to see if he's still there and if he is, I'm going to talk with the manager.

lol yep, that is about 90% of the employees working at major chain pet stores.
They think they can read the caresheets and become professionals within a few days of their orientation and training they get.

Re: Petland.. Ive finally succomed..
Well I just got a job at Petsmart so I definitely won't be one of those 90%. And thankfully my co-workers seem to know what they are doing when it comes to animal care. :)

Yeah thats very good. It would be terrible to work at a petstore and be the only one that knows anything lol. Just imagine if you had to constantly tell your co-workers that they were wrong.. That'd cause conflict in a matter of no time.

Well if they think you can own a savannah its entire life and never have to feed it any kind of meat then Im sure they would probably attempt to feed the BPs crickets lol. I just didnt have the will to tell her that her beardie is going to die a slow miserable death and that it probably wont live past the age of 5.
Weird thing was, the tarantulas and scorpians all had plenty of crickets and full water bowls with a little sponge. They had 2 BPs, 2 RTBs, a corn and a bunch of lizards. None had full water bowls. Seems they are only willing to take care of the arachnids.

Petland here is pathetic, they have adult CRB's in Narrow fish tanks. I don't even think they can move. The have a Retic in tiny azz tank as well. A corn snake that had crickets in it's tank with no hide and paper thin. I wouldn't even buy feeders there, I walked out. Eff that place

Please, do a great job, learn how the company operates, climb the corperate ladder quickly, become head of reptile husbandry, fire all of the idiots that kill the reptiles within most of the stores, then become supreme being of the world!
Thank You!

You might want to research where Petland get their puppies from. One of the worst mill buyers there is. I would never step foot in a Petland- EVER!

Re: Petland.. Ive finally succomed..
You guys think Petland is bad, maybe you guys should come and check out the Monster Pets in my area. I too went in to buy feeder rats, they handed me the rats in a paper bag and when I looked at them to make sure the were the right size (They would not let me it the room) and they were covered in mites, and I mean to the point it looked like they were rubbed in dirt. Needless to say I handed them back to the lady and drove out of my way to go to my usual family owned store that I love.
P.S. Monster Pets is also famous for selling puppy mill dogs. And the terrible part is that people are getting raked over the coles for these dogs. The mixed breeds they are selling at the one near me are $800!! You don't even want to know how much the pure breeds are... not to mention the fact I don't think they are 100% pure.

In regards to the mixed breed puppy prices, I can definitely say Petland is worse. At least, up here it is. I went the store to apply for a job and to also browse around, check out the habitats, animal health, the prices, etc. The habitats were definitely standard, which I was happy to see - all except for the puppies. The dogs were kept in tiny viewing enclosures, probably no longer than 5 feet, and 2 feet wide. There was typically a minimum of three puppies to one enclosure. Each had a pet bed, but the floor was a dirty metal grate, and I don't recall even seeing any water bowls. Most of the dogs just lay looking pathetic and unhappy on their bed.
I looked at one particular puppy: an oversized fawn-colored chihuahua female, obviously too big to be a purebred chihuahua. Asking price: $1010.00 All their dogs are labeled as [insertbreedhere]-"type". Clearly, all the animals come from a mill that pushes out so many puppies that it can't keep track of what's being bred to what.

Yeah, as much as I talk bad about Petco, Petland is by far the worst place I have ever came across.

It really all depends on the management and other employees for that certain location. But the ridiculous prices for that chain are always a constant. For example: $18.99 for ONE mouse. That's just getting silly.

Saw a Lined Gecko and a Leopard Gecko sharing a tropical rainforest vivarium in the local Petland here. Haven't been back since. 'nough said.

Re: Petland.. Ive finally succomed..
It has always been a dream of mine to win a huge Lottery jackpot, use the money to buy out one of the big chain petstores, then open my own chain of stores.
I'll hire nothing but longtime animal owners, each and every animal there will be housed in optimal conditions, accurate caresheets will be posted next to every animal. I'll pay all my employees twice the going rate, and show people what a real pet store employee should be like.
Potential owners will be required to complete a basic knowledge of care test before being allowed to purchase an animal. My stores will be the cleanest, best run, most amazing stores in the country.
And little by little, I'll use my profits to drive every other bad pet shop out of business. Even if I have to resort to things like undercutting prices or making sure their suppliers "loose" their orders for new items. All the wonderful little stores that do the best they can to compete will get mysterious discounts and random "donations" from unknown benefactors.
I'm sure I won't have any trouble finding employees, I just need to figure out the winning numbers I need.
