snake dosent move any more
My snake hides behind his tub all night and day he only comes out dor water and food he has hides his temp on cool side stays at 76.1f and 81 humid the hot side is 82.8 is this ok or is my snake sick
Re: snake dosent move any more
Nope, he's not sick. A hiding Ball Python is a happy Ball Python.
You should take a look at the caresheet here though. Your hot spot is on the low side.
Re: snake dosent move any more
Your temps seem a little askew.
Hot side should be more around 90-93
Cool side should be around 80, give or take a few
Did you say your humidity is 81% or did I misread? If it is, that's too high unless he's in shed (even a little too high for that too). Humidity should be around 55% give or take a few again.
Also, ball pythons prefer to hide as well, even if you fix the temps, they're not overly active snakes. They'll come out to drink and cruise a bit, but then go back to hiding.
Re: snake dosent move any more
get that hotside temp up before you run into problems with that snake. should be around 88-92 and try and keep the cool side at at least 78-80.
Re: snake dosent move any more
W hat type of heating set-up are you using?
Re: snake dosent move any more
yeah a real quick guide for a quick look to see if temps are acceptable is 80 cool 90 hot (give or take about 2-4 degrees up and down) humid 40-60 should be alright but try to keep it somewhat consistant
my BP does the same exact thing if you want to notice your snake out more you are gunna have to be up late, they normally do come outside but only really at night considering there nocturnal, and thats mainly if they're looking for food. i added some new stuff (decor) to the cage and noticed that night he was examining it..lol
Re: snake dosent move any more
I use heat lamps and it dosent seem to get that high I think I need a higher watt bulb for that humid is high because its hard to keep it up on a fish tank with a screen lid humid goes down fast he just shed yesterday any ideas on how bto keed humid at a constant temp and I have a 75 watt infered bulb on a 75 gallon only had him 5 mouths he eats sheds and every thing but latly he seems to stay hiden
Re: snake dosent move any more
Get an under tank heat mat. Get one that is 1/3 the size of the tank. It is hard to keep temps right in a tank but if you use a UTH along with the lamps it should be fine. Just be sure you pick up a thermostat to plug the heat mat into so you can control how hot it gets.
To help the humidity just cover most of the top of the screen with something. I used towels when I had tanks. People use plexiglass, foil, duct tape (only on the top so the snake cant get stuck in it). Only leave enough of a gap for the lights.
Re: snake dosent move any more
Sorry fot the double post but I forgot to add.. A cold snake will not move much. They also cant properly digest the food they eat. They are in danger of getting sick fromma respiratory infection or food rotting in the stomach because it is not warm enough to digest. You ask if the snake is sick. If it is you would see signs like excessive yawning, making weird noises like raspy, clicking, bubbling, gasping or hissing for no reason. Star gazing where they sit with the head pointng upward for a long time. Fluid coming from the mouth.
If it shows none of these signs then just get the heat up to 90 hot side and 78 to 80 cool side. Humidity around 60%.
Re: snake dosent move any more
I only here the clicking but nothing eles do I have to take him to the vet or is it cure able or is he not sick he still eating and sheding im going to buy a higher watt bulb will that help
Re: snake dosent move any more
You probably should take it to a vet. Call all the vets in your area and find one with an exotics vet or check the exotics vet thread here on BP.net. Someone who has experience treating snakes. Have a mouth culture done. This will show if there is any bacteria present. It takes a pricy round of injections to cure a RI.
Another heat lamp may work but then you the problem of temps dropping too low at night when the lights are turned off at night. There is also a ceramic heat emitter which works better. A 30 watt emitter would greatly warm your tank and would not take all the humidity out as fast as a light does. They are pricy (about $30 or so and can be found online) and must be put into a lamp with a ceramic socket. They last a long time though. 1 to 3 years if they are not dropped or jarred. Get one of these or an under tank heater and a thermostat. These are really the onyl ways to get the conditions right for a BP.
Re: snake dosent move any more
The clicking is like sometimey and can't always be heard are u sure he has an ri cuz my vet here is expensive for no reson
Re: snake dosent move any more
There is no way to know without more symptoms. If you can up the heat and humidity you can sometimes stop an RI in its tracks in the earliest stages. Just keep an eye out for any other symptoms.
Re: snake dosent move any more
I would get a Under Tank Heater and a thermostat instead of adding more or higher wattage bulbs. You can get a ReptiTemp 500r for $25-$30 and after you initially get it set it will save you alot of the headaches of constantly tweaking a dimmer...
