    Colorado Springs it is....
Well...it's that time of life again....that time where the Air Force plucks us up in their giant tongs and spins the world, then drops us to see where we land. :P OK....maybe not quite THAT random, but it certainly does feel that unstable. ANYhow, here we go again, this time to COLORADO SPRINGS. Not a bad place to be dropped into, I must say...

I was there once when I was in high school, which was a VERY long time ago. This will be an entirely new sort of environment for us and I'm looking forward to a chance to see and do new things with the family. In two weeks, I fly out to look for a home to rent. There are a lot of very nice properties in our price-range to look at, so it should be a lot of fun.

I know enough to aim for D-20 or D-12 schools, and a couple other districts look decent as well. I understand I should avoid D-11. Any other thoughts or advice from those who live there? We'll be stationed at Peterson AFB and hubby is hoping for a commute of ~30 minutes or less each way. I understand if we're in D-20, we can send our children to whichever school we want in the district. Any advice on which High School to choose? (I'll have a freshman and a senior, both very involved in band.)

Sorry for rambling on so much. I look forward to hearing from those familiar with the area. I'm anxious as anything to get out there and see it!

Wow very cool! I have always wanted to visit Colorado Springs!

I was raised in a military family and went from California -> Minnesota -> Kansas -> Iowa -> Kansas. I never got to go to Colorado...

    Good Luck!

Oh...and sorry I offer no advice but to make the most of it. :)

    Texas -> California -> Arizona -> Texas -> Virginia -> Alabama -> Arizona -> Texas -> Florida .......Colorado!

They're alright...pretty darned resilient. ;) The two older ones were upset, but do understand it's the way it has to be and will work hard to make the best of it. The youngest one just asked, "Does it snow there?" And when assured that we'll get snow, he was very happy. (Now watch...they'll have some kind of freak drought and not have any significant snowfalls for the next two years! :P )

Thanks for the well wishes and prayers...I'll take all we can get! It's an exciting move, but very stressful as well.

Figures...I move out of CO and someone I want to meet moves in...

And yes, there WILL be snow. :) More than you can handle at times. I know more about the Denver area than the Springs, so can't make specific suggestions, but I can say that it's very nice there, the state is a good one to live in, and you won't be too far from Denver for the quarterly reptile shows. :D Have fun!

Well Judy I guess this is the end of us meeting in Birmingham.:( But I am envious about the location though. I have always loved that part of the country. Best to you and yours on the move.:salute: And thank you for being a good military wife so hubby can serve our country.

My son's father is stationed there at Carson. He really likes it. We've only been out once to visit, but I thought it seemed like a nice place to live!

I was about to say the same, lol. Be prepared for snow in the winter ;). If you've ever been to Flagstaff (since I noticed you've lived in AZ a couple times), it's almost the exact same climate and elevation. Beautiful weather spring-fall. I only know this since my cousins have lived up there a couple years now.

Hope all goes well on the move! :gj: a very big :salute: to you and your hubby!

Thank you SO much for the video and the offer for more help! Because I'm sure I'll have tons of questions. Too tired to think of any at the moment, though. I'll shoot you a PM when I can collect my thoughts well enough to compose coherent questions that might have applicable answers. LOL

I showed that video to my daughter, who is going to be a senior and plays trumpet in the band. She's been to two different high schools already and is very sad to have to start over again for her SR year....but the video was a big lift to her that there are legitimate band programs available with the scale of talent she is used to performing in! :gj: (Of course...now she's laid down an ultimatum (tongue in cheek) and told me that if we can't get her into THAT particular school, she'll be devistated... :rolleye2: )

Thanks again for the very encouraging vid link!!

Spent the last two years at the Air Force Academy (June '07-June '09) for my freshman and sophomore years, and there is nowhere prettier than C-Springs in the summertime, and even the winter once you acclimate

Although as you obviously know you will get your fair share of snow and freezing temps, the amazing thing about the springs is that one day it will be 20 and snowing and the next it will be 65 and sunny. It's a wonderful area, and the only thing I miss about the Academy other than my fellow cadets. Good luck, congrats, and drink lots of water to prepare!

By the way, Judy, you'll love Colorado Springs I'm sure! I lived in colorado for over 10 year and my parents are only about 2 hours form Co Springs. Spent a lot of time in that great city and climate... plenty to do too!
