Sand Boas
Anyone here into sand boas? We've had a few species of boas but not many in the desert category (except for a Rosy Boa that was AWESOME). What do you guys think about 'em?

Re: Sand Boas
love em.
We have some awesome paradox albinos and a super hot Paradox Snow.

Re: Sand Boas
I haven't gotten one yet, but I've been looking into the rough-scaled sand boas. I like the way they look...
-
Re: Sand Boas
I LOVE sand boas. One of my favorite snakes in the world. I've been working with them for about 3 years now. I have several albino, anery, and high orange breeders. I picked up a nice pair of stripe het anery's last year. I plan on hooking the male up with some of my anery females this fall to make some anery stripes!
Sand boa enthusiasts seem to be few and far between so we gotta stick together!!
-
Re: Sand Boas
That's what I plan on getting next. I've always like them. I just find them fascinating. I would love a high orange female :)
-
Re: Sand Boas
i just picked up my first kenyan today and i cant wait till i pic up another(dont let my BPs read this):D
-
Re: Sand Boas
Black Russian Sands are awesome too. We have a pair of those as well.
-
Re: Sand Boas
I love sand boas! The one I had one docile as can be. A great eater as well!

Re: Sand Boas
I was never really interested in the smaller boa species. (It's funny how often I say things like that. I was never really interested in lizards until I was introduced to beardies, then I was never really into amphibians until I brought home my first tree frogs, then I was completely uninterested in inverts until my best friend bought a tarantula... I wonder if there's any reptile/amphibian/invert I actually don't like. :P) But anyways, I was at the San Mateo show on Saturday and spotted these little rough-scaled sand boas from Global Captive Breeders and fell in love.
My new little guy. :D

I do have to admit that those "true" sand boas with the eyes on top of their heads are a bit freaky and interesting looking

Re: Sand Boas
hence my name i am a TREMENDOUS fan of the family Erycinae and have studied many of the species within its three genera, however these are my only sand boas (for now :D) they are pretty rare and it was a hassle to get them, and i totally agree with Coldblooded! us sand boa enthusiasts are few in numbers, so dont lose interest in these little wonders. so heres my Eryx jayakari or Arabian Sand Boa
P.S. they are radically sexually dimorphic so don't think that ones underfed/overfed

I've always loved sand boas. Not sure I'd ever own one but never say never.
That one is VERY pretty.

Re: Sand Boas
Ive always loved sand boas. The first time I ever saw Beetlejuice I said OH MY GOD! The sand worms look like like sand boas!! My friends thought I was nuts but I liked the beetlejuice sand worms and thought they were cute because of that. :P

Re: Sand Boas
I bought a new adult female Kenyan sand boa on Saturday at a show, and I haven't seen her since then, haha. I have to say, I love her! It's so different to hold one compared to a python or even a colubrid, they don't grip on you whatsoever.

agreed, to be honest i think they are the most docile snakes out there, and ive never been bitten by them once, and Rubber Boas (Charina bottae which is in the family Erycinae) is an extremely tame snake that will stay on your hand for hours!

I just got one yesterday. I got her from Brian at BHB. He picked her out for me, and said well, she's a little wild :) And that she is. She is quite jumpy. Hopefully she calms down soon!

haha well do you know if shes a Southern Rubber Boa (Charina umbritica) or a Northern Rubber Boa (Charina bottae)? ive heard that the Southern one is more jumpy, and all the ones ive held are great, but that could just be my experience
-
Re: Sand Boas
She's actually a female Kenyan Sand Boa. The rubber boa's next on the list. My friend has a few and they are awesome. Anywho, here's a picture of her.
http://i872.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/100_2610.jpg
She's just a little skittish. I assume with regular handling she'll calm down.

Re: Sand Boas
I have a normal Kenyan at home, and have for about 15 years. He's honestly my favorite snake of our collection. Extremely docile should you want to show him off, and when feeding time comes around I can't stop watching. Ambush predation at its finest.

Re: Sand Boas
There was an Indian Sand Boa for sale through the wholesaler table at White Plains also. Tempting but you just have no idea about the background of the animal. She was gorgeous though, and quite large. I also almost bought a Calabars too. Really cool snakes! If I wasn't moving out of state in a month or two, I probably would have picked up a few more. :)

Do the Rough Scaled SB come in any color/pattern morphs...?

none have really been made except for naturally occuring mutations which STILL havent been found out, but there's a high chance that theres albino, anery, and patternless E. conicus and thanks about the PM ColdBlooded i replied, and nice site you got there :D REALLY excited about the future plans for an anery/amel striped colubrinus!!!!!

Gongylophis and Eryx are two genera in the family Erycinae, the main difference is where the species within the genus live, Gongylophis is essentially Middle Africa, which is is below Egypt, and it includes India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh (Eryx johnii comes from India and Pakistan, but it is considered in the genus Eryx) so Eryx conicus is actually a "mislabeled" name for Gongylophis conicus which is the correct scientific name for the Rough Scaled Sand Boa which hails from the region of India, and Pakistan

I will admit this to EVERYONE... I've had a secret love & soft spot for KSBs:D
I'll get myself a trio or pair at the San Diego Show hopefully, I'm gonna be breeding:P

Re: Sand Boas
i dont want to sound annoying here  but in the last picture, i saw that your keeping your KSB on fine sand....i wouldnt recommend it :( you cant see it, but theres dust that comes off of the sand when shifted, and this sand will eventually lead to nasal and respiratory infections in your snake. and i know that people always ask the question "if they're called Sand Boas, shouldn't they be kept on sand?" and the answer is no. in the wild where Sand Boas live, they actually bury themselves in coarse sand, somewhat like sandblasting sand, or the sand you find in Californian deserts. they also bury into the top layers where theres leaf litter and dead plant material that (to a degree) holds moisture when wet creating a humid microclimate.
just trying to help :D

I will be working with them as soon as the SD Reptile Super Show starts. Got two months left until that big weekend.
I'll be getting a trio of Anery Kenyans and most likely a pair of Rough Scales. Can't forget about my JCP and Borneo though, I'll be getting them I hope.

thanks for your concern... but i have tried several times to switch her substrate and she hates anything other than sand. ive had her over a yr and she has ben happy and healthy ever since. i have tried aspen, cypress multch, and other stuff that ive read about to use but when i do she stresses out horribly and flips out. so sand is the only thing to keep her happy, and i know just bc they are called sand boas that they arnt supose to be housed with sand. as i said, she hates everything else. :( but thanks!

Hmm I don't remember who he was next to. But he's a great guy, he even gave me a hands on popping lesson and let me practice on his snakes. I'm really bad at it.

sounds good :) also if she demands sand, then you could try sandblasting sand, ive heard that it works great with Sand Boas as long as you get a fairly coarse grain of it, but one that isnt too coarse

Try crushed walnut shells. It's basically sand but isn't nearly as fine and doesn't have the same amount of dust material. It's also a bit safer.
