Groo is awake!

My female red tegu, the infamous Groo!! She came out of hibernation fat and gorgeous. Hasn't lost weight, toes, etc. She needs a good shed to get the old skin off to really brighten her from this pinky/red to her more normal red/red.

Making certain that her hibernation chamber was sufficiently cold seemed to make her "sleep" solidly through a long hibernation, without waking during the time, and she emerged without obviously losing any weight! I took her outside for a good sunning and some pictures.

Great looking Red. How old is it? Looks really healthy to had just come out for the year. Looks very good!

Yep, Groo woke up a few days ago, and I gave her a quick bath before the picture. Thank you guys! I do adore her. She should be about 3 years old now. One day I'll get her another boyfriend.

Gracie, my big gorgeous male, was poisoned and died. You must have missed that way back when it happened.

good looking red! how long was she down for?

I think nearly 6 months.. I forgot exactly when she went down. I have to look it up, and that involves signing into a blog that argues with me about what my username and such is.
She's been down a LOT longer than previous years.. but it stayed nicely cold most of the time, instead of me trying to keep the temps lower with an AC running.

its funny how we have FULL tegus that we see only HALF the time!:mad: haha. when i got my blk and wht he went down 5 days later for 8MONTHS!! oh well

Ha! When I got my first tegu, it was a hatchling black and white who promptly went into hibernation the first week I had her. Frustrating! But they are cheaper to feed when you only have to feed them half the year!

The rope harness doesn't hurt her at all. It's a leash made for toy dog breeds, very soft. In addition, tegus have very tough skin. At any rate, she's not exactly staked out on a rope.. I held the leash so that if she should happen to try to dart off, she can't. Sometime soon I'll have to make her another harness, she has to get a new one every year from outgrowing them.

Groo is mostly shed now.. a bit brighter. Don't mind the filthy floor.. she's been having a ball playing with the dogs so there's dirt and mulch and leaves all over everything in here!

Gorgeous :) .. she plays with the dogs? That would be fun to see.

Yeah.. I've tried to get video, but they seem to prefer playing under the tables.. in the dirtiest parts of the floor.. but one day I'll have video of them. She used to play chase the water bottle with my yorkie Guido. She'd bat it with one foot.. he'd grab it by the neck and carry it off, followed by her. Was the most adorable ever!
