How many times has this happend to you?
You go to the pet store buy a feeder and someone in your family tells you how cute he is and that you should keep it as a pet & not feed it to your snake.

Well lets just say i have a new pet rat (Thanks to my sister)

O Rat pups looks are just so deceiving :D

I have a friend that likes to go thru my feeders and pick out the cutest one to keep alive.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

This last week it did not.

The one snake that got it was very happy.

Yea..................ahhh ....nope....doesn't work in this house. They are lovingly referred to as mouse burgers and if you can't handle how cute they are...DO NOT LOOK AT THEM!!! Hence my son is no longer allowed to hold the mouse cage when we are on our way home. lol

Luckily out of all the breeding rats I have, only one is truly a pet. A few of the big females were held back to be paired with certain males due to their colors but in the end all will be food except one. A super big young male that was born with rolls. He was so big and fat at birth that I had to keep him. He's brown with fat cheeks and looks just like a teddy bear.

Both me and my man dislike rats and mice, mostly because of smell and allergies...so this problem has never come up.

We've never had that happen... There was one time I was getting a feeder and the kid said "This is normally the type of rat that people come in to buy for pets... Do you care?" I said Nope! and just made sure to not look at it, lol.

I admit, it's happened to me once... I kept "Felix" for a few weeks, before my old roommate's stupid dog went and killed him. And just last week I spared an adult rat's life, but only because I was afraid she'd kill my snake - that rat was NUTS!! I ended up giving that one away, to this guy who likes adopting "troubled" rodents. Whatever, LOL...

My BP is a mouse eater, but one day, I saw this male rat that stood out from the other half-dozen he was rooming with. He was much bigger than the others, and to boot, he was a blue-hooded. Made him that much cuter.

I don't even entertain the thought of looking at live feeder rodents in the pet shop--and I will never feed live, not because it's safer even though that's a perfectly good reason too but I can't bear the thought of feeding something live with a thought level higher than a fish... I just think about how scared I'd be if I was in their shoes... paws... or whatever.

I have no qualms about frozen though, and I even keep them in my freezer next to my frozen veggies (in a non-see-through bag) to the horror of my parents/sister/anyone who hears about this.

I think rat pups are so, freakin', adorable... adult rats... not so much.

Almost but not quite. Dropped a rat in Paradox's cage and he didn't eat it so I went to the pet store to get a cage to keep him in. By the time I got back, the rat was gone. :( (took the cage back for a refund)

Mice are different. Enigma refused, prob cause he was blue. Tossed the mouse in a tub and fattened it up while I waited for Enigma's eyes to clear. Was kind of fun watching it push the substrate around and seeing what food it preferred. Not so fun seeing it had chewed a 1/2" diameter hole in the lid of the tub (packing tape fixed that). I accidentally snapped the lid shut on its tail, I *did* feel bad about that. But after a couple days, I offered it back to Enigma and he ate it. EOM
