Cartoons anyone?
So Okay I'll admit it I am kind of a geek about certain things. And one thing I love is cartoons. Mostly cartoons from The 80's and early 90's.
Some of buddies, even though they are geeks to don't get it. How I can like metal, drinking, snakes, and D&D. Yet still like something like cartoons that they consider kiddy.
So I thought I'd ask the good folks here. I know you like reptiles but how about cartoons. Am I alone in this?
Some of my favorites:
Teenage mutant Ninja Turtles (Classic)
Garfield and Friends
G.I Joe
Transformers
Thundercats
Looney Tunes
And some of the older japanese cartoons to, but some of that stuff weirds me out.

Re: Cartoons anyone?
GI Joe, Thundercats, SilverHawks, Teenaged Mutant Turtles, and Transformers. All great cartoons. I don't "get" the whole anime/Japanese animated shows at all. Most don't make a bit of sense at all, much less seem to have a plot I can follow. The animation sometimes is stills, that they zoom in and out of while having someone yell. Just doesn't do it for me.
The old 80s cartoons.. easy plot.. easy to watch animation. Sort of the same old tired plotlines.. predictable.. but entertaining too. Some of the stuff would occasionally make me go all "Physics.. basic physics guys!!" but hey.. it was fun. GI Joe remains one of my favorites to this day.. MAJOR GI Joe geek here. I think I'm closing in on owning all the comics.

Re: Cartoons anyone?
The 70s and 80s were the epitome of animation as an artform.
Cheap 3D and digital rendering have essentially killed it as an art. I'm not saying that digital animation isn't a bad thing, I LOVE it as well, but long gone are the days of "old school" animation.
Don Bluth was one of the greatest of the greats. Supposedly there is a Dragon's Lair movie in the works, but Bluth hasn't made a movie in years, the last of which was Titan A.E. (a stunning piece of animation around a fairly bland plot, which lead to the movie's overall failure at the box office). I'm hoping he still has some spunk left and that a Dragon's Lair movie in the next few years will be a success.
I think I'm going to watch Heavy Metal tonight.

Re: Cartoons anyone?
The advent of digital computer animation bums me out to. Everytime I see if I just groan. Especially when they jam it in a drawn cartoon. So most everything is animated the good way except for like one or two things which are digital.

Re: Cartoons anyone?
I love cartoons! Mostly of the late night variety. :P I'm a HUGE nerd for The Venture Brothers, but I also like Frisky Dingo, Archer, and although weird, Ugly Americans is so far keeping my attention.
I was a total anime nerd in middle school, and I ended up hanging on to Slayers and Trigun. They sit on the DVD shelf collecting dust, I'll probably never watch either, but I can't throw them away.
LOVE most animated Disney films, and the most of the movies that come out of studio Ghibli. :)

Re: Cartoons anyone?
Since it's already been mentioned:
The Last Unicorn has one of the most interesting voice casts ever.
I mean really, Jeff Bridges? Christopher Lee? (The Dude, and Saruman respectively)
Not to mention regulars like Angela Lansbury.

Re: Cartoons anyone?
The topic definitely brings back memories :giggle:. Some of my faves when I was younger:
Batman (old school)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Rocko's Modern Life
Doug
Disney cartoons (centered around Mickey, Donald, Goofy)
WB cartoons (can't get enough of Coyote/Roadrunner clips)
Angry Beavers
Recess
Sonic cartoons with Dr. Robotnik, not 'eggman' XD
Ducktales
Tailspin
Gummy Bears...the list goes on :taz:

Re: Cartoons anyone?
Never been a big fan, really. I used to watch cartoons but now they irritate me, mostly. The cartoons for kids today are inexcusably miserable (one of the reasons we killed our TV). The old ones are considerably better, but still nothing I would sit down and watch on my own.
-
Re: Cartoons anyone?
I love cartoons, most of them anyway.
I love the older stuff too:
Transformers
Thundercats
Voltron
Silverhawks
Jaycee and the Wheeled Warriors
Alvin and the Chipmunks
Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers
Captain Caveman
Dungeons and Dragons
Ghostbusters
He-Man and She-Ra
Jem and the Holograms
Wildfire
There were several others. The mind-numbingly stupid stuff they come out with today that they call cartoons is really just an insult.
I like pretty much everything Disney, and Don Bleuth is a favorite as well. I don't think you ever outgrow cartoons.
What warms my heart is when my kids watch the old stuff with me, and actually enjoy it.

Re: Cartoons anyone?
How Could I Forget He-man, Jem, Ghostbusters, Voltron, and She Ra!!! I love those. I think my very first crush might have actually been on adora :P
I gotta say I like a few cartoons nowadays to. but oddly enough I don't really care for family guy. It's funny enough I can't explain it well. Not say it's bad though.

Re: Cartoons anyone?
I love cartoons. The old looney toons and nickelodeon stuff is my favorite. I can't stand the shows they have now. I miss Rugrats, Rocko's Modern Life, Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry.

Re: Cartoons anyone?
Hey I am a huge fan of foghorn and of daffy duck myself.

Re: Cartoons anyone?
The only cartoon I've actively watched in the past year or so (I hardly watch any television) was an anime - Cowboy Bebop (I saw most of the episodes back on Adult Swim a few years back, but just recently watched all of the episodes in order). It's short, but a great series.
-
Re: Cartoons anyone?
Duck tails, Tail spin, and Lets see if anybody remembers this one? The littles
-
Re: Cartoons anyone?
Does anybody remember Kimba the White Lion? That was my favorite as a child.

It's my absolute favorite short anime series. At 26 episodes it is long enough to tell a story, but short enough to have constant character progression, unlike most American television until the advent of the serials (house and heroes type of shows) of the 2000s.
Japan IMO is the king of good animated storytelling in a television format.
The good ol' US of A is still the king of the animated feature film, however.

Re: Cartoons anyone?
I like a lot of cartoons. From Looney Toons to the Simpsons. And some anime movies, like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, are my favorites.

Well, I'm going to go against the grain. I do love the classics (anyone remember David The Gnome?) but I also love some of the newer ones. I love Phineas and Ferb and Yo Gabba Gabba. I also love me some SpongeBob SquarePants. Who wouldn't want to live in a pineapple under the sea?

Re: Cartoons anyone?
I grew up mostly in the 80's and a bit of the 90's.
I love cartoons. Well, I love the ones I love. It's like anything. Some are good and some are bad.
Growing up I watched tons of Hannah Barbera and Looney Tunes and such but my favorites areyour typical 80's flare:
Transformers
GI Joe
He-Man
Thundercats
GOBOTS
Sure I watched Smurfs and Snorks as a kid but when I see reruns I just laugh and wonder why I liked them back then. I still will watch the ones listed above if I catch them on.
In the late 90's (my colleges years) I became a kid again and fell in love with anime. The first stuff I saw came on Scifi Channel on Friday nights. They weren't series but movies. The ones that stood out were:
8-Man
Ako vs Bko
Tank Police
Lensman
Akira
When Cartoon Network started showing series I got hooked on DragonballZ. That is my favorite of all time.
I effing hate Pokemon.
Other animes I have enjoyed since are:
Gundam Wing (the other Gundams are bleh by comparison)
Tenchi Muyo
Rouroni Kenshin
YuYu Hakusho
Trigun (although it had the worst ending ever)
Inuyasha (never got to see the whole series because it became so violent CN moved it to after midnight)
In addition to animes and the 80's toons, I have enjoyed:
Batman TAS
Superman TAS
Batman Beyond
Justice League
Teen Titans
Ben10
Static Shock
Legion of Superheroes
Venture Brothers (before it got too dumb to watch)
Metalokalyps (however you spell it; the one with Dethklok in it)
Total Drama Island
Cartoons I hate are:
The aforementioned Pokemon
Spongebob Squarepants
Mainstream adult cartoons like Simpsons and Family Guy are hit and miss for me. But I do miss Futurama.
Most other stuff I kinda just boring.
