Star Gazing
Do any of your guys star gaze alot? I know it can be one of symptoms of a RI. Is it normal if there are no signs of RI?
-
Re: Star Gazing
They will parascope and look around a bit.....
Is he just sitting there looking straight up?
Corkscrewing?
-
Re: Star Gazing
He might just be looking around. Parascoping is common.
If he is not looking around, and just staring/star gazing...I'd be worried about Inclusion Body Disease, not RI. No one likes to think about it, but it's always a worry.
Either way, if you think something is wrong: quarantine and take him to the vet.

Re: Star Gazing
She is just star gazing, leaning her head/neck against the side of the tub. She is not doing it anymore, but was for a while.. I will keep a close eye on her

Re: Star Gazing
I was worried about my big boy he somtimes looks like a cobra, but he has been doing this since October , so I'm guessing he just might be stretching

Re: Star Gazing
Chances are it is not IBD unless you have recently acquired a new animal without quarantining it.
You probably just caught her while she was cruising around and she froze in that position.

Re: Star Gazing
Hi,
Is she a spider?

I didn't think of that, good question. Anything in the spider family can have spins, which can look like gazing.
@Kaorte: I was unsure if the one he is speaking of is a new addition or not. All I know is if I see star gazing, real star gazing, I err on the side of caution so that I never get a case of IBD.

Re: Star Gazing
Can someone please tell me what the signifigance(sp?) of the breed being a spider in regards to this subject? Looking to learn...Thanks!

Re: Star Gazing
One of the more knowledgable people on here will be able to elaborate, but I understand that particular breed are prone to "wobbles", etc, due to their makeup. Not sure of the science behind it, but I believe it is normal (for them) and does no harm.

Re: Star Gazing
From my understanding, all spiders are prone to having the spinning trait. Not all of them show it, but it is common. It can range anywhere from a slight shake, to really bad wobbling, and spinning.
I think (correct me if I'm wrong), the first wild caught spider had a wobble, and since has spread through breeding. If you can imagine, there aren't a lot of wild caught spiders, and as far as I know there was only the one. Think of it as every spider we have now is related to the one wild caught. Make the first spider's wobble genetic, and there you have it. The ink dot in the spider gene.
Some say to try and breed it out, by not breeding a spider who has a wobble, but I think non-wobbling spiders have produced wobbling spiders and vise verse. It is something to consider when purchasing a spider. Sometimes the wobble can make it difficult for them to eat.

Re: Star Gazing
My spider who corkscrews a bit rarely star gazes, but I have several others that I catch doing it now and then.
It's pretty funny when they realize you see them and they stop doing it and lay down.

You've seen an adult spider that has NO wobble?

Re: Star Gazing
May I just ask, I understand 'periscoping' but what is 'corkscrewing' ?
I presume 'stargazing' is when they just stare upwards?
I'm keen to be able to recognise these behaviours if they can truly indicate a health problem!
Thanks

Just curious, every one I've seen over a year old either wobbled or corkscrewed.
Of course I haven't seen them all, hence the question :P

When they twist till their heads are up side down and their body looks like the shape of a corkscrew.

If you check youtube you will will find examples of all of these. Search for "spider ball python spinning or corkscrewing". Stargazing is a symptom of the fatal (in pythons) IBD. Search for "Ball python IBD" and you will see why people are asking if it is a spider ball python.

Re: Star Gazing
Hi,
Also search for "wobble" - both on here and youtube. :gj:
Stargazing is a tricky one as there are several possible causes ranging from symptom of disease, through neurological damage to "the snake just wanted to"
The more worrying causes can be, respiratory infection, parasite infection, IBD and neurological damage.
It's one of those things where you want to start looking closely to see if there are any further symptoms that might help decide if it is something you need to worry about or not.

Very good point!

Re: Star Gazing
Wow. Just looked on YouTube. That's actually quite disturbing (where they've contracted IBD)
