Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
Hi there,
I'm thinking of getting either the Xbox and the PS3 once I stabilize my employment. Prices for the PS3 are dropping here and although the Xbox360 is a LOT cheaper than the PS3 slim, there's only one thing stopping me from going "insta" xbox 360:
The 3 red rings.
From what I've read previously, it basically occurs when the Xbox "overheats" after say....2 - 4 hours of non stop gaming and ends up as a very expensive paperweight. WHile it's true that I occasionally see xbox360 repair ads and diff. claims from diff. techinicians ("I specialize in 3RL!!!), further research tells me that fixing the 3rl is not an exact science.
Feedback anyone? Should I go for the xbox splurge? Or bid my time for a ps3 slim?
Thanks
PS: I have a roughly 5 - 6 year old PS2 and I've had NO problems whatsoever; can i expect the same if I purchase either next gen console? (360/ps3).

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
I have had my Xbox 360 for over two years now and we've gotten the red rings twice. I would just recommend not playing too much as the red rings will probably show more than you'd want them to.

That has never happened to me before.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
I have a PS3, and it's never really had any issues. The first unit I bought crapped out after a year, but I had the extended warranty, so they replaced it for free - with a better unit, nonetheless. :gj: I've had the new one for a while now (1-2 years?), and never had any problems with it. Sometimes I covet the XBox games, but otherwise I'd recommend a PS3... other advantages are that you also get a blue-ray player, and unlike the XBox, internet access is free of charge.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
I got a 360 and two months later, the disk drive stopped working. It was under warranty so I got it repaired by microsoft. Two months later... It stopped working again. I took off the face plate and found that MS had broken their own warranty sticker...
So I traded in my 360 games, HD and controller for a PS3 and all I can say is I wish I had got the PS3 to begin with. Better graphics, better sound, less lag online, no monthly payments for xbox live (seriously, screw that). All around better. Not to mention I now have a Blu Ray player.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
PS3. I've had no issues at all with mine.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
a few years ago, the price diff. bet the Xbox and the ps3 was so huge, it's not funny. Now that the price range is not so big, both systems actually are appealing to me now.
Another thing scaring me from getting an xbox: I heard microsoft's coming up with a new console. Any truth on this?
Right now, the only games I'm looking forward to are:
1) Resident evil 5
2) Super SF 4
3) The force unleashed
4) The force unleashed sequel (saw the trailer at the VGA..man, talk about arse kicking!!!)
I understand both consoles have the said games
@Those who had to endure the "3 red rings":
Naturally, I assumed that you sent them for repairs. Is it just like here, wherein the "repair for the 3 red rings" isn't exactly an exact science?
@Tiff:
You mentioned "don't play too long". DUring "gaming heavy" days, I could go as long as 3 - 4 hours (esp. if I pick up a fantastic RPG title). Is that "too long" for an Xbox 360?
Thanks again...

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
I've had two 360's. The first I bought used from a friend who bought it the day it came out. It lasted up until the end of '09. The red rings is USUALLY repairable if the warranty does run out. It's generally caused by some of the solder joints fracturing due to the board flexing as it heats and cools. The newer 360's have mostly fixed this. While I don't usually play for more than an hour or two at a time, my buddy and I will usually run it for a good 8 hours or so when he's back on leave and have never had that cause a problem.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
If you want to play games, get an XBox. If you want a BlueRay player, get a PS3.
Way more players online.
To those complaining about the price, 12 month cards sell online for 30 bucks all day.
If you don't have 4 bucks a month to play Live, you shouldn't be buying 300 dollar gaming systems, lol.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
PS3 all the way. I love that thing. I love the PS3 games. Current favorite--Oblivion.
Planet Earth on Blu Ray is pretty spectacular, too. It's totally worth it.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
Ok I have both the Xbox 360 And the Ps3....when it comes to online gaming like call of duty and sports games online I vote Xbox 360. You will get the 3 rings eventually everyone has or will its covered under the mfr warrenty the first year after that is 99 bucks or something. Now for the Ps3 you got the blueray dvd player inside but the online play isn't that hot and the main reason why I prefer the 360 is because 95% of the game for Ps3 are 720p HD output when the games for 360 are all 1080p. But I do keep my Ps3 around especially for God of War and a couple other Ps3 exclusives. Hope I could help you out man.

I must disagree with you my friend, the Ps3 graphics BLOW compared to Xbox and the Ps3 online is trash compared to 360

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
King of On-Line Games=XBox 360
King of Crashed Systems=XBox 360
Middle of the Road for EVERYTHING=PS3
High Priced BlueRay Player=PS3
The blueray player WAS a good selling point for the PS3, but these players have come down in price so much, that it's not worth getting the PS3 just for the blueray player.
You can't beat the Xbox 360 if you like to play games with your best buds. It's the hands-down winner. I personally think the graphics on both are great, but I'm a fan of the 360 and always will be. I've had 2 occurances of RROD, once was under warranty, the other cost me somewhere around $100 to have it fixed. Shouldn't have to spend money on a known defect, but what's a guy gonna do.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
Hardware Reliability alone the PS3 all day long but really I think they break even on everything else...though the PS3 will likely have a longer life cycle since Sony is known to constantly refine existing products where as so far the XBOX has only had changes that are mostly to fix faulty designs in the first place.

But I have heard that IF you have to have a PS3 repaired, the costs
are higher than the Xbox 360. This coming from a Best Buy Geek Squad critter.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
I have one of the new HDMI Xbox and haven't experienced the RRoD. Apparently its fixed as the chipset has better cooling. I did have something else fail (can't remember what it was) but I got a new Xbox under warranty. Its been fine ever since. And all of my friends have Xbox and none have ever had any issues.
In the end, both are great systems with a lot of great games. For me I love Halo so much that I had to get a 360. I was thinking of getting a PS3 for the Blu-ray, but they've come down in price that I can't justify spending the money for a PS3.
Really, either will be a lot of fun. And I agree that the Xbox online experience is much better than the PS3 having played both.

I've owned all the PlayStations and none of them have broken, one of them is a Launch PS2 and my PS3 is the old 60GB with the PlayStation 2 hardware built into it. I have a lot more faith in my Sony hardware than I do my 360. I refused to buy one until the Falcon builds were released and once they were (that's the HDMI 65nm CPU & GPU) I snagged one up and haven't had any issues with it.
My friends and I play our PlayStation 3s as much as our 360s.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
I have an Xbox360, and have never seen the red rings...but I don't plat ALOT either. If I were to start from scratch, I'd definitly go the way of the PS3, but by the time I traded it in it wouldn't be worth it. And considering most of the games are on both consoles, I don't want to switch just for better games and a blu-ray. So...I don't find there's much to go either way. Maybe if your really into the online gaming, which I don't use at all.

I must agree with Polish. The PS3 has a lot of attracting qualities, like blue ray and free internet.
But if you're planning on getting a lot of games and playing online, my suggestion would be the xbox 360. I've played COD Modern Warfare 2 and other games online on both systems...all i can say that the xbox360 online competition is brutal. I've played on the PS3 against other PS3 owners and it was like playing against children...In my opinion, the Xbox360 online gaming community offers much more competition.
but then again, it's just my opinion.
I've had the 3 rings only once, and i've had "heavy gaming days" turn into "heavy gaming weeks" since they fixed it and nothing so far.
My friend's PS3 just crapped out and he has to buy another one.
My xbox's drive is messed up and i have buy a new one as well.
But considering the amount of TIME i spend on it, i'm not surprised that it gets busted. LOL.
If you want a cool system with blue ray and free internet, then the PS3 is your best bet.
But if you want to join the best gaming community either on or offline and have MUCH BIGGER variety of games at your disposal, then the xbox360 shoulc be your choice.
By the way, Xbox 360 HD graphics are JUST AS GOOD as the PS3. It also depends on the game you're playing.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
ps3 has blueray xbox dvd....ps3 has internet xbox doesnt..ps3 free online xbox you have 2 pay...and last ps3 has God of War

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
I don't see the point of getting an 360 when I have a load of PS2/PS1 games. Quite honestly, I think both systems have equal graphics. If I want to play online, I use my PC, where I don't have to pay a fee to play online (I already bought the game. I shouldn't have to pay additional fees).
On top of this, the 360 is insanely load. WHo wants a console that sounds like a jet engine getting ready to take off?

Go buy a bicycle or a canoe.
:P
-
Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
like i said before, if you want a video gaming system that has blueray and free internet, go get yourself a PS3.
I don't deny that the PS3 is superior in this aspect. it's even adequately priced for having so many different features.
But, if you want something you're going to be doing some REAL gaming in, get an xbox.
I prefer the Xbox 360, not because i'm hating on the PS3, but because i like to play against a more difficult crowd. And anyone who has ever played more than 2 hours on both systems will tell you that the xbox360 gaming community is more challenging. Also, the xbox has a lot more games than the PS3.

about the bike...have you ever been out on the road inside your car sorrounded by 1 million cubans suffering from road rage (i'm cuban as well..)? not safe. now imagine being in a bike...yea, definetly not safe...

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
gators, pshaw. I canoed around gators all the time when I lived in Louisiana. The worst that ever happened was a pissy water moccasin deciding to crawl in the boat and having a hell of a time lifting it out with the paddle.
Also the alligator gars scare the pants off me every time I spooked one of the big ones by getting too close, big splash and swirl as they dove to the bottom of the water.
I never had any actual problems with alligators. As long as you're not walking a small yapping puppy near the water's edge, they leave people well enough alone.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
To those saying that you've had the xbox's for around 2 years and have already had 2 RROD's - How is that acceptable? My ps3 was bought the first day they were available and I've never had any trouble. Also, with the ps3 you don't have to buy a proprietary power cable or A/V cable.
Plus, now that the halo series is over, PS3 exclusives are the only ones worth the money now...Gran Turismo 5 is coming soon and GoW III just came out as well as I & II being remastered for HD. I've also not noticed a difference in online play. You can say that there are so many more on XBOX, but who cares? You can play with what...maybe 15 other people at the same time? Unless, you're playing MAG, another PS3 exclusive, I don't know of any that let more than 16-20 people per map.

ive played my xbox for 12 hours straight with no probs. as long as you let it cool down when it gets hot nothing should happen. BTW xbox 360 is 356765434567654 times better than ps3.

^^^X2 The last halo that came out sucked. These next 3 or 4 or however many you suspect they will make...guess what, those are going to suck too. Movies and video games are the same. When they try to stretch it into too many sequels, they suck, and that's exactly what's happening to halo

If playing a game for six hours straight on my PS3 isn't "real" gaming, I don't know what is. Sure, 360 might have a tough crowd..If you like playing against a bunch of pre-teens who enjoy mic spamming. Online gaming isn't everything. It's in fact, a turn off if paying is required. If you want a real community challenge, try the pc community.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
To the OP:
In all honesty; PC for the win. :P
However, I bought an XBox 360 when the value bundle pack went on super sale last xmas. It came with the Elite system, HDMI wire, headset, the wireless adapter and 2 games (Halo 3 and Fable 2) -- one of which I would have bought anyway. I got the set for the same price as a new XBox 360 Elite by itself.
I only plan to use it for the exclusive games. So far I've only played Fable 2 on it, and it is now sitting under my TV unplugged waiting for Fable 3 and the other exclusive games that are coming out later this year.
RE: overheating
From what I've read, when you install the games to the HD and keep the system in a well-ventilated area, the issue isn't so major. Of course, when reading reports online you have no idea how these people were keeping their systems. I know somebody that handles returns, and the amount of people that keep their systems in closed cabinets barely larger enough to fit them is staggering.
Oh well... to each their own.
Prior to my 360 purchase the last console I owned was a Super Nintendo! What can I say? PC for the win! (I'm also into the mod community, which you can't readily do with consoles.)

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
GO WITH THE PS3 ALL THE WAY DUDE!!!! :gj::gj::gj::gj::gj::gj::gj:
free online play... and you can browse! the net.. which you can not do with the xbox even after spending money you can't do it....
there are a lot of probs with the xbox like people have said on here... need i say more... bout that.. don't think so...
you get the Blue Ray player which is like 200 bucks.. but your getting that and a VERY NICE GAMING SYSTEM!!! for well im not sure how much they are now lol. i got mine when they 1st came out.. got the 60g for 600 bucks.. and have had no probs with it at all!!!! so worth the money in my opinion
besides if you have a computer... almost any game worth playing on the xbox you can just get for you computer! cuzz its made by the same company lol.. duh .. im sure you all knew that.. but i felt like saying it...
and one last thing.. every so often Sony come out with FREE updates to make the ps3 even better.. idk if the 360 can do that or not just saying the ps3 can lol...
-
Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
They both have issues. The PS3 has a Yellow Ring of Death too. It goes like this, exclusives and what you look for. If the largest game library and also online play is important to you, then X360 is your platform. If you want a total entertaiment unit (plays blu-ray) with less games (but not enough to really cross it out) and an online service that will be charging soon and is not as robust as Xbox Live, then PS3 is your system.
I prefer the X360, but that is me.
-
Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
While I cannot say anything to disagree with the annoying over privleged 12yearolds you will find that on either system. Even though the xbox live isnt free(It should be) It is by far superior to playstation network!
Another thing to consider is exclusives. PS3 has been coming out with a few lately that look pretty interesting(HeavyRain,MAG &GodofWar3) Xbox has some excellent exclusives as well (Gears,Halo Etc.)
I own all the current systems and my favorite is 360 but I'm not slamming the Ps3 I think it breaks down to one question. Are you a hardcore gamer? If you said yes then go with 360 if you are more of a casual gamer go with the PS3. Reguardless which you pick they are both excellent systems and you will be happy with your purchase.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
I believe the PS3 is the better machine, but Xbox Live kills the PS3. I think if they start charging for PSN, then the service will most likely get much better and players would switch over to PS. I think this is a good thing.
My brother lives in Venezuela and since there is no easy way for the population to access Xbox live, everyone uses PS3, xbox is rare over there.
About the Red rings, the newer Xboxs dont seem to have this problem, I have played in a newer one for hours non stop, no problem, no rings.
I have always been a PC junkie anyways. But havent been able to afford to build a new PC with passing years. So I got my quick fix with xbox 360. When Diablo 3 comes out... I will have so sell a kidney or an arm or a leg to build a new pc :P
-
Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
Xbox 360 for sure. Online play is the best (and more challenging) Plus i like xbox more.... idk. Never had the red rings yet, i have had my xbox for a bit over a year now, only problems ive had is that sometimes it goes retarded and wont read a disc, or says that the disc is dirty when the disc is spotless. Sometimes when i put a game in it trys to play a DVD so i have to re do it...
Paying for live stinks but its not that big of a deal if you buy a 12 month deal... its only like $40, or you can get a package...

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
I've played my 360 for entire days with no issues.
I've seen friends get the red rings, but Microsoft has always fixed things as needed.
The only difference between the two is the free online play in the PS3 and the blu-ray in the PS3. But I have no need for a blu-ray player because I have a TV that's 10 years old and I'm not going to get any money anytime soon for an HDTV, so there's really no point to me.
Plus all my friends have 360's. Rather play with them than play by myself. I also can't stand PS3 controls for shooters, and I've played many PS2 games in my day.

Good point, i forgot to mention that ive never had any problems with over heating, even when I would play constantly when I first got it. Like literally when I first got gears of war 2, 8 hours a day or more. :D
Also, i guess some of the probelms are easily fixed, and microsoft does replace stuff.

You should research the Yellow Ring of Death on Google. It is VERY real. Also Sony HAS to eventually go to a pay model. You'll see. They have no choice. They lowered the price from the $600 asking price in the beginning. That type of massive infrastructure has COST and SOMEONE has to pay for it. Believe me, they are not going to continue to eat the cost for that. Believe what you want if it makes you feel better, but don't say I didn't tell you so when it happens.

What MASSIVE infrastructure? They let the developers use their own for gaming servers and what not. That's why Microsoft's is so big, the 3rd party's can't do that like they can for Sony. Similar to how it was done on the PS2.

in my opinoin.. hands down ps3 is more bang for you $.... and just the better choice over all.. even if they start charging for psn....
You should research the Yellow Ring of Death on Google. It is VERY real. I don't MAKE stuff up. I present FACTS.

Also Sony HAS to eventually go to a pay model. You'll see. They have no choice. They lowered the price from the $600 asking price in the beginning. That type of massive online infrastructure (to support millions of gamers) has EXPENSES (very expensive ones at that) and SOMEONE has to pay for it. Believe me, they are NOT going to continue to eat the cost for that, those were comments from Sony execs, not just NOBODYS. Also if it didn't have legs they would've shot that down immediately.
At any rate, believe what you want if it makes you feel better, but don't say I didn't tell you so when it happens.

First of all let me state that I am NOT a random kid just saying stuff. I'm 36 years old and have a Masters Degree in Information Technology. I don't just put out RANDOM information WITHOUT knowing what I am talking about. At a particular level, YES the publishers do host their own servers, BUT they ALSO tie into the larger Playstation Network. If they didn't then how do you explain this....

Also here is information on how PSN works.

Re: Xbox 360 vs PS3: What's the verdict NOW...
i had a 360 for 2 years, and i got the red ring pretty recently. i used to play cod and guitar hero soooo much so i dont think the 2 - 4 hours effects me... i work on xbox 360s at work 8 hours a day, and i dont hav any problems with mine.
something that i noticed about 360s that red ring are that ppl move them... dont move ur 360 around.. choose where to put it and PARK IT.
ps3 is better hardware than the 360 and the multiplayer games on 360 are ranked higher than those on ps3. ps3 is perfect for the players who love RPGs and want the best graphics for their money. 360 is for gameplay and multiplayer loves such as myself. i have both, i have worked on both, but i prefer cod, 360, and the arcade games on 360 than the platform specific games on ps3
note: MAG for ps3 is awesome =p.
