Lets Get them to make an IPhone App

I realize not everyone owns an iphone. but an Itouch works the same for this. and they are cheap compared to some options.

What I am invisioning is pretty simple.

The Iphone/Itouch can use the camera to read barcodes.

Each animal has a barcode like Degei for example or Vyper uses.

You hold the phone/touch to the barcode. the snake pops up and you can tap any set of buttons.

The buttons would be basic:
Shed, Urate, Feed (with a number of size options, you click "feed" than a menu pops up for f/t, live, freshly killed. Than a size chart pops up where you pick medium rat, or adult mouse)

The date would auto enter. and the program holds the data.

Plug in to the pc, or use wifi? even email the data. And it will update degei or vyper. or which ever program decides to pick this up?


In reality I am thinking you could use this app for months before uploading. Maybe even to Iherp?


I would hire a guy I know to build this myself. but the implementation into degei/vyper/iherp etc is well past our ability.


Compare a 200 dollar itouch to what a wireless barcode scanner would cost you? not to mention the extra functions, ease of use. ability to pull up info on the snake.

I know I have a fancy iphone sitting here. and I am writting out my history on cards. My decision on which software I plan to buy will be based off who supports an iphone/itouch app first.

What does everyone else think?

It's kinda hard to work BP.net on an iTouch..

lol Actually I think a Forum app would be awesome for all forums.

I find a lot of them a hassle to check on the iphone :D

For the record, the camera barcode scanning is not the bee's knees. It pretty much sucks, don't believe what you read on the net.
And unfortunately, until they get more bluetooth profiles into the phone, a hardware scanner will not work with it either without a lot of extra hardware and cost.
That said, what about a simple data collection version of Degei that would produce a file you could then email to your pc and sync into the program on your desktop?

My security company uses a google spreadsheet "form" to process incident reports with our iphones. After selecting the options (gender, hair color, clothing, height, weight, etc.) you hit send and it emails it to a pre-setup account.

Maybe something like this would work for some basic simple data? Length, weight, feed times, etc.

lol, it's even harder to work on a blackberry...

I think the biggest issue would be how to look up the specific animal you want to record an activiy for.

i would imagine that would be easy with an iphones search function

If you were to number the animals 001-999 or what ever. if you walked to the animal typed in 467 for that snake. added the data. hit save and type the next critters number?

Even a nice app to collect feed/ weight/ sheds/ etc would be nice and a simple way to upload to degei? Sort of like a digital note card.

But I think the easiest way to find the snake would be a large keypad. type in the number on the bin and it pops up?

I really hope something can come of this idea, it would be so nice to have the option of being able to record a lock in the morning when cramped for time.

Or marking down a shed, or an ovulation, something that only one snake is doing vs having to pull out the computer and enter that info.

I have a mytouch and this would be awesome. I only have 1 bp but with a picky as an eater he's turning out to be it would be nice to be able to keep track of when he's refused and when he actually takes his dinner.

We're discussing apps for ipod touch/iphone. Someone mentioned making it for the droid phone. Microsoft has nothing to do with this. :confused: It would have to be coded differently for each phone.
