Het piebalds which to pick.
so, i am in a delema. spelling?
Im talking to seperate people.
One has a 1373g 66% het pied for $200
One has a 500g 100% het pied for $225
Both female.
Any suggestions?
as for paper work the 100% dont have any, and the 66% is from boas and balls.
and as a kicker, there is a 66% for $50 at 770g cuase it is a problem eater, idk what that intails persay but im thinking about grabbing the 2 66%'s
Guess I should ask this question as well, in YOUR experience how offten for 66% prove out to be het? and visa vera how often do they not prove out?
Is it worth the risk for the almost triple wieght?
ill see if I can get pics of all 3 I was talking about.

Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
Well let me ask you a few questions. What are your breeding plans with this Het Pied Female? If she doesn't prove out, do you have other co dom males that you can breed to her so that she does become a good part of your breeding stock. By the time your female is quarantined and cooled she will be probably 3-4 months older, and if those lighter females are 08's they would be ready to go. You don't just buy a breeder female and throw the male in there, so really think about it.
Honestly just buy a 100% Het pied so you KNOW you have something, otherwise you have to have a backup plan for the normal. Personally i have both normals and hets, but i will NEVER buy a 50 or 66% het unless i think as a normal it will be awesome and may do wonders. On a side note, Boas and Balls is awesome!
Also never purchase a 100% het on the internet unless its from a guranteed reliable person. I bought my hets from a breeder friend and i've been to his place and i've seen his set ups and the parents and all his snakes, so i trust him. How are you going to be able to trust someone you've NEVER seen, or ever met and even if they do have "paperwork", whats to say its really theirs? Just wait man, i've seen TOO many people get ripped off cause they thought that 100% het was such a good deal and because it was double het for Albino Pied, they had to buy it. They never thought to think that $500 for a 1800 gram female 100% Double Het Albino Pied is worth maybe 5 times that if not more.
I'm not trying to get you down, just please do your research and remember, paperwork really means nothing so spend the extra cash for a trusted source or go and see it for yourself.

Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
Really for me there is no choice.. 100% all the way.
Boas & Balls will not do you wrong either.
She has great BP's and I would just spend the money to get one you know will produce some day.

Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
I just purchased three '08 100% het axanthic females recently because I needed some to pair with my male axanthics. They all just happened to come with the bonus of being possible het albino as well. I won't be disappointed if none prove out since I got a very good deal on them and needed het axanthic females anyway. I am pretty excited about them though, because I started out looking to make more axanthics, and now I've got a future snow project in the works! This is probably the only type of circumstance I'd ever consider getting possible hets in, and only from a reputable source. I'd say go with the 100% het pied. That's what I'd do.

Couple of things first off thanks for answering me honostly.
1. the guy is local, craigslist. (makes it so much betterright?....Right?haha)
2.I dont plan on breeding it for a while for the fact my 09 100% het pied (see a theme here?) male has to mature up. and the only male I have is the 09. I had one other adult normal. but my adult female and him never locked up(that I saw). I had him for 6 months, then my female got sick so I didnt put them togther any more. I ended up trading him to a friend for 2 Red Dalmation geckos. and decided I will try breeding hopfully next season again. when my female gets better.
3.I would like an 08 female-ish so It can be ready by next season.
4. I was trying to hold out to get an acctual pied. but for some reason I cant justifyto my wife why I need a $1000ish snake.
5.off comment here but, the lady with the 66% also has a 1800g pied for $3000 wish I could get it.
6.I do have a expo to go to on may 15th, boas and balls, VMS herp should be there. I cant wait, its my first expo. so I may just hold out till then.

Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
Just a for warning if you want to get a pied at the expo you might want to be their when the doors open. The pied tend to go fast at the expos here as this is the only one Colorado has!!

Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
I would definitely purchase the 100% het. And the 66% possible het is priced well. If it is not a het, you have a breedable female soon. So she is worth it.
-
Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
Since the 100% het Pied has no paperwork and is coming from a CL deal... I say DON'T DO IT. I would rather get the two female 66% het Pieds. The worst you can do is have 2 beautiful Normal breeder girls. Either that or wait for another 100% het Pied girl.
-
Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
Personally I'd save the 225.00 and buy a 2009-2010 100% het female from a reputable breeder. That way I know I'm getting the most bang for my buck. The only way I'd buy the 66% girls is if you had a Pied male to at least produce some Het's if she doens't prove out..
Just my two cents.

x 2
With hets either buy 100% hets or buy an entire clutch (heavy on females) of Poss hets and get a visual male in a year or two.

Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
With Hets, they look NORMAL, so you had better trust the person you are buying from.
If you buy a snake from Craigslist that is not a visual, I WOULD ONLY PAY THE PRICE OF A NORMAL. I equate this type of purchase to buying a "Rolex" from a street vendor, or buying jewelry in Tijuana. You get what you pay for.
When possible Hets are sold as adult, it makes you wonder....
I would buy a Het from someone you know, even if you have to wait an extra year.

Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
Thanks all of you!
So I have decided to get niether and save for a visual pied. Im moving into base housing and my extra money a month will go up by like $600 (cuz I wont have rent or utilities) so I can save up really quickly and get one. thanks all again!!!

Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
It depends on whether you like to gamble....and how much you trust the seller. This poss het could possibly still be breed this year. Since het Pieds usually have "markers" though, it's very easy for the seller to keep all the poss hets that have them. In this day and age BG would be very suspicious of any poss het Pieds.
There is a large breeder out there that sold poss hets with markers years ago to a couple friends. None of these have proved out and it's about 20 poss hets. Clearly this breeder found animals with the markers(normals can have them also) and made himself some extra bucks. BG just remembered this fact.:rage::rage:
Having said all this..... unless BG knew the seller very well, he would go with the 100% het. If he knew the seller well, and saw "het markers" on the poss het, BG might go that way.

Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
I would save my money and buy a 100% het with paperwork. I bought my male het without paperwork, but can always contact the breeder and ask him again. At this point though, I'm so smitten with him that I don't care if he's a normal or if he prove out to be a het... I'm just happy to have the guy! He does have the het pied markers though.
If I hadn't gotten caught up in the moment, I would have asked for paperwork.

Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
Ya go with the 100%. Even though you think the other is so close to breeding size, chances are she will make you wait an extra year anyhow. When they go to a new home it takes a while to settle in and they may not breed for the first year. I bought a female like that hoping to produce later that year but she is only locking now, over a year later.

Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
Be cautious with animals in base housing. When I was in the Marines, I stayed in base housing. I couldn't have pets other than dog, cat, etc. You don't want to be stuck trying to find good homes for your loved snakes. :salute:
By the way, good choice by staying away from CL. There are too many really cool, dependable, and trustworthy members on this forum that you can buy hets from.

Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
Just wondering, were do you see that boas and balls has het pieds available?
-
Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
My opinion, stay the hell away from anyone selling a snake on craigslist. Craigslist is great for used aquariums or apartments, not for recessive heterozygous snakes.
Are the 66% from the same clutch?
On having issues with problem feeders, two of my double het albino pied's were labeled 'problem feeders'. They eat when they feel like it, and I feed them ASF's now (a bit of a pain but I am fine with it.) The male is a stud breeder, this will be the first year for the female as I held her back a few years to get some grams on her and make sure she and the clutch would be healthy.
Also noteworthy, I could be misspeaking because I am pulling all this from my memory, but the Houston zoo was the first (I believe) to breed BP's in the US (maybe in captivity anywhere), and their snakes were notorious problem feeders and skinny. Ball pythons are feast and famine animals, it is very common to have them go off feed for 3-6 months. It causes a lot of stress for owners the first couple years.
For color and pricing, I just added a 100% het pied female from a good friend/breeder in early Jan for $250, she weighs 474 grams right now on a full belly. Again I would not buy anything off craigslist.
If you go w. the 66% good luck! Be patient w. the problem feeders!

Re: Het piebalds which to pick.
Well since your in the springs a few things. Im gonna guess your ar Ft. Carson. Check to make sure you can have em. Also go talk to chad at scales and tales. Its located on Academy and Woodman. Personally I would wait until the next show in May and talk to the breeders there. If your in a hurry to get one I know that Art in Scales is here in town and she is expecting clutchs soon. There is also Boa's and Balls, Clockwork, and Top line Constrictors. Thoes are a few of the trusted breeders in colorado off the top of my head.

I am going to ring in on this one again. I have not, had or sold 66% het pieds since 07 or before. If it is an animal from me, is should be heaver than that being an 07 baby. I would go with a 100% or a visial pied.
