What have snakes done for you?
Well I'm not goin to bore you with a long, most likely corny sounding story so I'll try to make it as painless as possible.
I was depressed, suicidal thoughts, and felt un-loved.
I was loved by my family but I felt I wasn't because my parents wouldn't let me get a snake  and no I'm not a brat, its just one thing that I have really wanted but *knew* I couldn't have.
So I just felt like I couldn't get anything accomplished in life (I was young and stupid and immature)
But the one day my parents finally let me get my snake! Since then I have improved, I have something that is different, and something I have enjoyed since a young child. I can handle my snake daily (unless food or shed)... and that just gives me joy in life. I guess I'm messed up in the head :D
so what have snakes done for you! and your story dosent have to sound as corny as mine ;)

Re: What have snakes done for you?
Good story right there.
Snakes give me a sense of calmness and settle me down when I'm mad about something. It really does sooth the soul.

Re: What have snakes done for you?
My snakes and snake room are also my happy place.....I have a chaotic life with my "real" job and my family. My snake room is where I go to de-compress from life. They give me a sense of calm.

Re: What have snakes done for you?
I also find them extremely calming and add beauty to my life. They also exercise my nurturing instincts, since they are fully dependent on my care. I don't have a nurturing job, nor children, so it's definitely filling a need in my life.

Re: What have snakes done for you?
Besides draining my wallet, my snakes give me a sense of calm. Like many others, my snakes provide me with a happy place to go when I'm angry or upset. Not to mention its like Christmas when I get eggs or an egg hatches. :D

Re: What have snakes done for you?
I've made them into a business--so, they're my livelihood.

Re: What have snakes done for you?
I really got into reptiles when i was going through a tough time in life.
They help me calm down, and i believe are very therapeutic. ;)

Re: What have snakes done for you?
They are somthing to adore and to love. They are my hobby. I love them as I would a child. When I started to earn a lot more money than I ever have before i was thinking I wouldnt be able to spend it fast enough. Now I cant earn it fast enough!!

Re: What have snakes done for you?
I'm happy for you. It's kind have been the same thing for me. My mom still doesn't approve of me having two snakes (let alone one). She says that it's a bad omen and it has something to do with her beliefs and her ancestors. But every time I pull my snakes out,I feel at peace. I forget everything that makes me feel depressed or mad and just enjoy the time that I spent with them. I use to think that there was nothing for me in this world... but once I found my passion for my snakes, it's all turned around. :)
I think, not only snakes, but all reptiles have the ability to make people feel at ease.

Re: What have snakes done for you?
Well...for me...it gave me something to throw myself into. I do not often do things half way. So I guess it gave me a great hobby and the ability to share it with others. A passion so to speak. I do agree they are very calming....I have a friend that lives near me and will call after a really bad day and say...."ok...I need a glass of wine and Elizabeth". lol

Re: What have snakes done for you?
they are my calmness, my passion and well just awsome, also reps, expecally Lizards help me loose weight, small reptile room with 6 heat lamp, 3 MVB and during feeding and cleaning will help drop some pounds.

Re: What have snakes done for you?
Both my snakes and my mouse colony give me a lot of joy. Although there are times when I wish I could take some time off from feeding, cleaning, etc., overall, I love every part of having them. Sometimes when life is stressful, I find it incredibly soothing to take out a snake and hold it for a while. I have purposely scheduled mouse feeding time as the last thing I do before going to bed, because the routine is relaxing and seeing all the new lives that have been created in my care ends my day on a positive note.
It has also been something that has brought my family together a little bit. It isn't like there was any great rift and now suddenly we are close, but it is really neat to have a hobby that we all enjoy.
I hope that someday I'll be able to make a small profit off of breeding them (either the snakes, or the rodents, or the combination), which would be really nice to be able to contribute to the family financially while still being a stay-at-home homeschooling mom.
A totally unexpected result is that all the negative press and proposed legislation has been a good way to teach some important lessons to our daughters. Don't believe everything you read (all the lies and misinformation in the press), don't take things at face value (HSUS isn't what they'd like you to think), how the government works, etc.

Oh, and they've given me the viewpoint that even though other people think I'm crazy, weird, or complicated, my life is 110% more simple and sane than the lives of say, Lady Gaga and Tiger Woods.

Re: What have snakes done for you?
Mine have given me the same thing. They are very calming, theraputic animals. They require attention to detail so they keep me busy. I spend alot of time in the snake room when I get home from work. Not only feeding, watering, cleaning, but also just hanging out. They all have different personalities and I laugh to myself when I look at a particular snake that has an attitude that I have made a nickname for. For instance, I have 2 "hookers". LOL This is what I call the snakes that have to be taken from their tub/enclosure with a snake hook due to their cage aggression/feeding response. My male SD retic will be coming in a week or 2 and he is also a hooker :P
My collection increased drastically especially when I was going through a hard time like you were. I know I need to downsize a little with babies on the way but once you have them it is SO hard to chose who stays and who goes.
I have always said if only those who are uneducated about them or just plain afraid would allow theirselves to interact with one, learn etc.. Most would see just how wonderful they really are :snake:
