Weird BP Dream
So.. I had a dream about my BP last night. I woke up this morning pretty shaken up by it lol
Before my dream, let me preface with last nights events...
Last night was feeding night (5 days since her first meal with me), and so I stopped by the pet store to pick up a live mouse. As I was waiting for the guy to bring a box so I could pick out a mouse, they had the rats next to them in an open tank.
I reached my hand in and was swarmed by a pair of rats. They both came over, and started to wrestle around with each other next to my hand. They let me pet them, play with them etc, it was.. pretty darn cool.
Anyhow, so I get my mouse, and go home. Left the mouse in her box for ~45 mins before feeding my snake. Put the mouse in, she grabbed it, killed it and then ate it. Took ~10 mins.
So anyhow.. in my dream last night..
I assumed the role of this mouse. And I could see myself outside of my snakes tank. So I (as the mouse) am running around, scared, knowing a predator is right there. My snake grabs me, and starts to constrict me. It has me coiled, and I am fighting for air. I am fighting to move. My legs are kicking, things are slowly starting to get black. I am wondering why I (person) am not trying to help me. I think it isn't fair- I had no chance. Why me? The last thing I see before totally blacking out, is my own face outside of the tank. I try gasping for one last breath to prolong my own life, but upon my final exhalation... the snake squeezes me even tighter, and then everything goes black.
It was so weird. It happened multiple times last night. I woke up feeling extremely guilty, and I am not sure why. I understand the reasoning behind feeding my snake obviously. I don't enjoy watching my snake kill/eat, etc. I just understand it is necessary for her survival. And because of my dream and my own thoughts, my mind's perception is that what I witnessed in my dream from the mouse's view is reality.
Anyhow, it was a very weird dream that I couldn't stop thinking about and had to get off of my chest. I wonder if by playing with those rats, I personified them a bit, giving them feelings/emotions that humans share... So I felt guilty about feeding off something like that. I don't know lol.
Very weird. :rolleye2:

Re: Weird BP Dream
Well.....Damn, you had me feeling guilty with that very detailed story. I think I will sell of my collection to the highest bidder. The bidding starts a few years down the road after I produce a few clutches that I want.:)

Re: Weird BP Dream
oh noes! the mice are trying to brainwash you!!!

Re: Weird BP Dream
Feeding F/T is alot less guiltifying... (is that a word?)

Re: Weird BP Dream
Do you like steak? If i ever feel guilty i just think of a delicious med-rare piece of cow on my plate. Mmmmmm. I bet my snakes think the same thing when they smell a mouse/rat!
Winter is almost over, and it's about time to fire that grill up again! I'm having withdraws :(

Re: Weird BP Dream
Damn that mad me sad I feed F/T but I feel sympathetic towards any animal fed alive.
-
Re: Weird BP Dream
that's pretty much how the mice/rat feels. although they can't really reason about why the person isn't helping them...it's still kind of sad.
anyways, this reality is the reason i feel f/t.
i think mice and rats are really cute
i can feed them to my snake after they're dead no problem.
i recommend you don't dwell on how "cute" the snake food is. lol.

Re: Weird BP Dream
Yeah, I just came back from Chinese buffet. Poor dog... er, I mean chicken.. :P
Those were once alive as well. It was just a weird dream that gave me a different perspective. Although she wouldn't take FT, I may give it a try again.
And it isn't like I regret keeping a snake or anything...but.. it does make me wonder why alot of people get such enjoyment watching the snake kill/eat a live rodent. Look at youtube, tons of people enjoy watching the death of another animal.
I am not a hippie, carebear, etc etc. I respect my snakes killing ability, something it has obviously perfected over an evolutionary time period. It is something definitely worth seeing.. But.. I have no desire to video tape it with me hooting/hollering/laughing in the background, and playing it with heavy metal music. I find the actual intake of the food much more interesting than the killing. It is amazing how they put their food down.
Anyhow... just a bizarre dream I had. And a bit of a sense that I am responsible for that mouse no longer existing. Yesterday at this time he was sleeping/eating with his inbred brothers and sisters lol.. and today... nothing. A cease of existence.
But hey... my snake is happy, fed, and was curled up inside her warm hide this morning digesting her food. She will enjoy a nice long life under my care, hopefully :gj: (I noticed she only uses her warm hide after she eats. I guess to speed up metabolism a bit?)

Re: Weird BP Dream
Just an interesting bit of trivia-don't underestimate mother nature... ;) Rodents have the ability to release their own endogenous pain-killers/anesthetics. Perhaps nature's small way of showing mercy to an obvious mammilian food source!

Re: Weird BP Dream
The quality of a death has value. Perhaps a CO2 device or learning how to whack them and kill them instantly would relieve your feelings of anxiety.
The mouse will die, that's a given. How it dies is up to you.

Re: Weird BP Dream
I used to have pet mice, than they became feeders to my snakes. I rather my snake kill them than me, but that is just personally me. I have a problem my self causing any pain or harm to a living thing, even feeders.

Hell yeah they are. You must go to sleep feeling guilty. Someone better rescue this ball before it needs help.

Re: Weird BP Dream
It could be your pocket trying to get you to but F/T

Re: Weird BP Dream
Aww man, that makes me feel guilty for feeding live! But I mean I cant feed F/T she just ignores it and treats it like her half log thats in her cage. So the only thing I can do is feed live.

Re: Weird BP Dream
Very insightful dream...I feed p/k, so I do the actual killing before I feed the rodents to my snakes. It's really tough for me sometimes, but having as many snakes as I do, it is a regular chore and I've become used to it. But I'm not indifferent to an animal's loss of life, and I always give them respect. I'm a vegetarian to, lol, except when it comes to sea food, I can't resist. But I'm the kind of person who believes if you can't watch an animal get slaughtered you have no business eating it. But with the rats and mice, I have a weird fear that they'll come back to haunt me. But I've never had any dreams about it.

I assure you I don't feel guilty enough to neglect care for my snake  It is the nature of keeping one.
As for going to sleep feeling guilty, I don't think I am. I didn't yesterday, not until I had that dream lol. Who knows. It isn't going to stop me from feeding her on Monday. It's just the nature of the beast.
I am sure for every snake owner, there is a rodent owner. And for every mouse that is eaten by a snake, a snake is eaten by something else. And so continues, the circle of life.

Re: Weird BP Dream
If it makes you feel any better, I had a really weird dream. We just picked up a BP this past Sunday. We got her all set up in her new home, checked her out for a bit then left her alone. During the time we were checking her out, my fiance brought the cat-Gus in the room and held him while he watched the snake too. Side note: the room the snake is in always has it's door closed unless we're in there, the cats (there are two-Gus and Charlie) will never have the opportunity to hurt her-the snake.
Well that night I had a dream that we were feeding her kittens AND THEY LOOKED LIKE GUS! I was crying my eyes out. They were small-like a medium rat or so...but I kept saying-they're kittens...we can't feed her kittens...and I don't remember if the other person in my dream (never saw them) said anything or if I just knew what they wanted to say....Jake has to eat. This is what snakes eat...
It was WEIRD and when I woke up I felt...gross. I checked on Gus & Charlie...and Jake. Everyone was okay and nobody was eating any body else.
