Topless or Not
I'm getting ready to build another rack and got to thinking. Would I like this rack to be set up for tubs with or without lids? What do you think? Since I'm building it, I can set it up anyway I want. Lids are good sometimes, but other times, I think they just get in the way. What do you think?

Re: Topless or Not
If you have a sizable collection, the lids make cleaning, watering, and feeding more of a pain. However, building a rack for tubs with no lids with the necessary precise measurements to ensure there are no escapes is way beyond my capability! :D

Re: Topless or Not
IMHO, i would go topless, it's much easier. i build mines to hold 32qts topless and love it, i also have 6qts in there but i hate to have to pull the hole thing out just to check, take them out or change water.

I agree the tops always want to come off anyways when you slide it in. At least with my rack that is the way it is.

Re: Topless or Not
i built mine with lids on and it is a bit more work but it easier to move the tubs (as in stacking them if i need to treat the room for mites, no worries about hte wood mildweing from the moisture, no rubbing against the wood and spilters plus if they do start to squeeze out the lid prevent me from dragging their body against the wood and causing more injury.
plus i can change the water with hte lid on just open the one side ans slide it out enough to place water in make s it harder for the snake to try and speed out the tub.

Get your mind out of the gutter. Well, actually, that was my intent. Had to get ya to look. Would you have opened the message if I'd titled it rack lids/yes or no?

Re: Topless or Not
Topless is easiest obviously but I am forced to use a top with one of my tubs because of the size of the snake and the risk of escape.

Re: Topless or Not
I have used both, and topless is the way to go. Feeding is way easier without lids, as are water changes, and peeking at breeding activity and snapping quick pics. Once you go topless you never go back.

Re: Topless or Not
whoops! Meant to click topless. My bad!

Re: Topless or Not
As nearly everyone else has said, topless is best for a rack - that sounds so dirty, LOL.:D One of my racks has to use lids, and it's a real pain in the butt... water dishes are always spilling, and I have to remove tubs completely for everything (cleaning, removing snakes, etc). I tried to remedy the situation by using furniture sliders to prop the tubs, thus eliminating the need for lids, but the snakes took advantage and managed to escape. My big girl even figured out she could push the tub, giving herself a nice gap to squeeze out of. So not only do I recommend topless, but also the front-loading style (as opposed to side-loading, which is what Mona escaped from).

Re: Topless or Not
I would go topless as well. I build mine with lids due to the fact that I only have a few, but after it was all said and done I was wishing I'd gone topless. But I kind of fixed the problem. I took and cut the lids in half or a little more and hot glued hinges on the top! So now I just pull out the tub and lift up half of the lid. :D

Re: Topless or Not
All this topless talk is making me want to go play with my snake:P

Re: Topless or Not
they just get in the way man.

Re: Topless or Not
I would do it with the lids. But then again, I am really obsessive over my snake not being able to escape. My mom would freak! But if you're not as weird about it as I am, just do it topless.

Re: Topless or Not
my 4 racks were all built for tubs with tops. I like the added safety that theres no way out.

Re: Topless or Not
oh la la, topless. But keep the lids to transport if you ever have to move.

Re: Topless or Not
You don't need to measure the spaces! All I did was lay the first shelf on the floor then put the tub with a 1/8 sheet of masonite(for a spacer) on top then put the next shelf on that then screw in the sides and keep going until all your shelves are done then take out the spacer and they will slide nicely! Thats all there is to go topless!

Re: Topless or Not
I like having lids on my tubs, since it makes it easier to pull them out and evacuate for hurricanes. http://www.wax32.com/images/bigrin01.gif
