Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/pet/1610281146.html
He's the one both pictures on the bottom left & right. I could really use him to breed with my female Pastel for some Supers, what do you guys think?

Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
No, no, no don't do it. I swear anyone who has to put keywords in their post is just trying to get as many viewers he can so he can sucker them in to normals for het albino prices, pastels that are just light normals, etc. I just am very weiry of craigslist and you have to consider why hes posted it the way he did.

Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
i agree with steve, i wouldn't trust buying from CL
-
Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
Its 75 bucks...
you can go to a show and pick up a adult male for 125...
Then you can see how well they look as adults... idk..

Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
If he's not too far away, I'd go for it. Check out his setup, and you'll get a feeling for if you should go through with it or not. I wouldn't hesitate if I went over there and felt comfortable with the guy. I've had some great CL experiences, but you HAVE to be discerning.

I agree with the above post if you want to check it out it won't cost you anything. Also if you feel him out you may be able to get it even cheaper once you are there in person. It looks to me that this guy might be a breeder and just trying to ''dump'' his leftover stuff and that is the only way to do so on CL. I got my biggest female for $30 from CL and it was a steal as far as I'm concerned. You have to be careful, but you also have to be careful at shows and pet stores.

Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
check it out in person definetly. They look pretty dark to me.....
But for me...Ima sucker.....I would just take them to give them a good home....lol
-
Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
if you like them go for it. 75 bucks is a good price for a male pastel.
-
Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
$75 is way too much for that snake. I think you would be nuts to a such a poor example of the morph to your collection when you can get really nice ones for around the same price.
-
Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
i would go and look at it in person. a lot of snakes look better in person. my pastel i just bought looked amazing in his pic but when he arrived he looked even better and he was 150 shipped. 75 is pretty good. i only trust reputable breeders online, not CL.
-
Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
Pictures can be decieving, it could be a smokin hot pastel or it could be a light normal. I say there is nothing wrong with going to check it out, hell he even said he had adult male pastels available, so if the 'pastel' pictured turns out to be a poor example ask to see the adults and find out prices.
It never hurts to look. I got two 6 year old virgin females off of craigslist last year for $75. I also got a 600g spider female and my smokin hot pastel male off of craigslist for $225 as a pair. Sometimes people just don't know where to list things, but CL isn't filled with horrible people, but like others have said, be cautious and don't get your hopes up.
-
Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
That is one really bad looking Pastel. They are so cheap that I would spend the higher price to get the best possible looking one from a reputable source.
-
Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
It's up to YOU it's your money.
Now would I purchase this pastel for $75? Nope, this is a poor quality pastel that will brown out.
Now I do not know if you want him for a pet or to breed one day but either way it is a poor example.
If I wanted to get a pastel even as a pet I would still want him to be one of the best example out there, if not I would just get a normal.
Again YOUR decision!
-
Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
You know....
I was thinking.
If you have to start a thread about whether or not you should get a snake....when your other threads say you have to 'talk your mom into letting you get more'.
I say dont get anything.

Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
After Patrick's post, I checked her profile out...
I had no idea she was 14. I am sorry, but in this day and age, a 14 year old girl has absolutely no business meeting anyone off of the internet, much less CL, for anything.
It seems like a VERY bad idea. I know alot of members here have their own kids around that age... would you want them going out to meet someone that posted an ad on CL? Highly unlikely.
I would stick to an online breeder or shows tbh. It is much safer for you, and there are some great ones here to give your business to.
Sorry if I come across as overprotective, crazy, not-understanding, whatever... but.. there are some seriously sick people in this world. And at 14, you may think you know... but, you don't.
Whatever you decide to do, please be very careful.

Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
I've said this to several people before, and I'll say it again: Price should be one of the LEAST important deciding factors in determining whether to get an animal or not!
Bargain buyers generally end up with poor quality animals, or poor examples of whichever particular animals they get. First and foremost, you should pick an animal that looks great to you. This is easier to do with a lot of species after you get a general idea of how their colours will change as they age. However, if you see an animal that looks stunning when it's young, in most cases it will turn out to be a stunning adult as well. People should be very familiar with any sort of animal they are considering purchasing. They should be saving links to websites where they've seen nice examples of that particular animal. Better yet, they should gain a preference for characteristics within a species, locale, or mutation, so they can be discriminate about the animal they are purchasing.
Also very importantly, you should know the individual you are dealing with. There are far too many scammers, liars, and just all around bad people that you might subject yourself to dealing with if you don't know any better. Do your research before making any purchase. Check the person's website if they have one. Look into what sorts of animals the person is known to work with or specialize in. Look the person up on the BOI, or the feedback forum here. These are all good ways to get an idea of who you may potentially be doing business with. This is not to say there aren't any good little guys or hobbyists (I'm still a "little guy" in the business myself) who may not have had too many sales up to a certain point, but that is one of the things forums like this are great for - so you can get to know people you may well deal with in the future. Everyone's got to start somewhere... but Craigslist is not the proper place to do so, and if someone's actually passionate about these animals they'll have no trouble finding far better places to post.
After you've done some of these sorts of things, that is the time you should concern yourself with the price of the animal, and begin determining whether it is worth the price to you. Go ahead and think to yourself what you believe you should pay for the animal. If it's listed around the same price, I'd say go for it. Most of my buys have been from seeing the animal in person, or seeing a picture of the animal and saying to myself, "Wow, that's a stunning example of a(n) [species/locale/mutation]!" Most of the breeders I bought from I already knew for their good reputations. Price was not really an issue.
Sorry for the bit of a rant. Just sort of irks me to see so many "should I get x animal?" or "is x animal worth y amount?" threads around on the internet. It is your money after all, get what is worth it to you!

Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
I going to say NO to be honest.
I cant help but think back to a sick animal you had that you were worrying about, whether it be the Blood or the Water Dragon, worrying about affording the vet. Ergo you asked me how to euthanize it.
You should be able to afford a vet visit, as well as deal with medical problems should they arise. Let ALONE, be able to feed and house and deal with any problems your hatchlings should come down with.
Acquiring animals on the cheap shouldnt be your methods of shopping for an animal, though I would expect at such a young age money is harder to come by. You should look at someone's reputation, their guarantee if they have one, as well as a whole bunch of other things.
PASS on this animal Tiff.
(Im sorry if this was offensive in any way, but its the truth)

No offense but not everybody is out to get you. My wife and I have met a few local teens off of craigslist (they were with their parents) to sell/trade/buy fancy mice to. We meet all sorts, but 99% of the people you meet are no different than you and I. If she were ever to meet up with anyone from the internet discretion is always a must, but not everyone is a serial killer/rapist/pedophile.

It only takes 1% to ruin your day (or week, or year, or life).
I agree with Trevor, Pat and Russ. No hard feelings Tiff, but there's plenty of other good pastels out there.

No they aren't all serial killers or rapists and Im sure the majority of the people on craigs list are honest, but it only takes -ONE- bad person. One bad meeting to take a life or atleast cause pain. The point that Im sure they were trying to make is that she is 14 and has no business meeting anyone off the internet let alone of craigs list with its history of scandals.

Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
as long as you go with your parents and you like the snake i dont see why not. i got a nice woma female from craigslist for 150 and so far it has been healthy and in my opinion is one of the best looking womas that i have seen so not everyon on CL is out to scam you.

You probably run into worse people in line at the grocery store.
She obviously should go with her parents, not saying she should wear a bikini and go alone. I'm not an idiot. I generally bring somebody with whenever I meet anyone off of craigslist, just for the safety factor for that 1% and the what if factor. I'm just saying that if she is accompanied I see no issue with checking out the animal in person. Seeing something in the flesh is always better than pictures. :gj:

Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
You can find a much nicer one for the same price. In BG's opinion, you should shop around. Remember, this animal is going to be the father of your babies.

Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
I've read everyone's posts and I do feel some of your concerns about me purchasing this Pastel from this guy. I'm also not offended in any way and I appreciate all of the posts.
I was going to just check out the snake, see if it's healthy, see it in person to see if I really do want him. And no, I wasn't going to go alone. People misunderstand that because I'm young, but I'm smart enough to know to bring a parent or adult along.
I thought it would be cool to get this Pastel because I want to start getting more morphs and Ball pythons in my collection for future breeding plans. I wanted to make some Super Pastels once the two of them are up to breeding weight. But for now I'm not going to purchase anything and I'm raising up money for when I need it most (like a vet bill or a tub upgrade for the Ball pythons, things like that).
I already have some money and I'll be getting some more soon so I can at least have some in case I needed to see a vet. I no longer have my Chinese Water Dragon or my Leopard gecko (I was trying to not keep lizards, my Beardie is the only one I'll have for now on, and possibly another Leo sometime in the future) and my sick Blood python is currently being treated back at the sanctuary for her RI.
Thanks for all of the posts, I'm passing up on that Pastel and focusing more on my snakes I have now.

Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
Jay is a stand up guy, I wouldn't be reluctant to buy the right animal from him. That being said...I think there are much better pastels out there for the money.

Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
For those that are taking the OP's age into consideration.. Tiff has been here long enough for most of the veterans to know that she is extremely mature for her age. She speaks in a way that would convince anyone who didnt know any better that she was 30 years old. She generally gives good advice, doesn't get mad when people critisize, and has wisdom beyond her years..
That said.. IMO that doesnt look like a pastel at all. Maybe the picture is bad quality but it looks like a normal all the way to me. Going to look at it would be the only way to know for sure. Just dont get over your head with snakes. It doesnt take much to reach the point where you are overwhelmed and will feel bad if you decide you must sell a snake or 2 to make things more managable.
You know that its up to you. You have seen all the CL postings on here. Many poeple have adopted snakes from CL. It can be a great thing or a bad thing. Quarantine should be longer than usual but in the end the decision to buy is up to you.

Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
Being in the phoenix area I am curious as to who this seller was because I am looking for some stuff in the Phoenix area.
Can you PM me his name or details please?

Re: Baby Male Pastel.. Should I Go For It??
With so many trusting and cool people on this forum that breed, why would anyone buy from CL? I just don't get it.:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:
Don't just use this forum as a means for education. Use it to network, and build relationships. Every high quality morph I own was purchased with the help of a member here. Take advantage it.

X2, all of mines, not that many only 5, were purchased from some one here or from some one they know well except goliath, he's from a local breeder with a good rep.
